Excellent games. I have a big tournament (well big for me) coming up in a few weeks. And these reports have really got me thinking. I haven’t been that into Kolgrima because she’s complicated for me, but these reports are making me reconsider. Ive also tested double long riders and not been impressed, but now I want to give it another shot.
I was wondering about your third game in your third turn. It looks like you might have been able to move Kolgrima behind your champs, then targeted winters tide at the back of the foremost champ and it would have caught dahlia as well. Two or three sprays could have killed dahlia or spartan, or froze dahlia to negate haunting melody. I was wondering if you saw that, and whether you would have done it, assuming the distances and angles matched up.

Lol, turns out they changed the brackets and I’m playing into a guy with Maelock and his forty gators.
This has been a good thread though, I feel a lot more confident when I do have to face Harby.

I’ve been using two min units of long riders with madrak and Ragnar and it’s just been really effective. It lets them spread out and cover two zones. Three large bases with reach is enough to tie up a unit or a couple jacks. Itheyre particularly effective with Ragnar because under the feat they just don’t die. I’ve had a fair number of games end on turn 3, with them clearing or slamming things out of zones, repositioning to jam the stuff behind out of the zone, and Living with the feat to let me score.

So I have a tournament in a month where I know the first match will be against a really good harbinger player. This is the list he’s been using for a while
Theme: Faithful Masses
Harbinger +24
– Hierophant 3
– Devout 9
– Crusader 10
– Guardian 15
Allegiant of the Order of the Fist 3
Allegiant of the Order of the Fist 3
The Covenant of Menoth 4
High Paladin Dartan Vilmon 6(0)
Wrack 1
Rhupert Carvolo, Piper of Ord 4
Vassal Mechanik 1
Champion of the Order of the Wall 8
Choir of Menoth (min) 4
Idrian Skirmishers 15
– Idrian Skirmisher Chieftain and Guide 5
Horgenhold Forge Guard
– Attendant Priest
I don’t have a lot of experience vs harby and I was looking for advice on what list to bring, how to play. I’d like to stay within adr because it’s masters format, so I’d be able to bring a sideboard, but i could step outside of it if there’s a good reason to.

Is this better than a Prime Axiom and 3 assimilators?
I see the appeal of having more jacks, but ground pounders are so effective it seems hard to give them up.

Borka probably won’t work against dudespam. I mean the iron fang list is a dude spam list, so if it doesn’t work against that it ain’t gonna work against ret sentinels Or storm division or, god help you, banes.
I think that’s what you’d want your second list to be, mostly for dude spam, but calandra with a bunch of beasts isn’t going to plug that hole. I think the calandra list would be best into battle group lists, just like borka, but less good into shooting. I’d drop her if you see a gargossal, since borka’s feat doesn’t work on them. She also has a nasty assassination with feat, misfortune Amd bombs, so look for matchups with casters that are weak to that.

It is interesting that Calandra is not mentioned for an all-comers list. Have our other warlocks benefited more from the northkin CID? Troll players have this weird tendency to never play calandra even though she’s probably the bet caster in the faction. She is a subtle caster that requires finesse, which goes against the trollish tradition of running at your opponent as fast as you can and punching them to death. my personal experience wth her is she seems good on paper but is hard to actually run. she suffers from the classic problem of wanting to get forward to use most of her toolkit, but she’s pretty easy to kill. She also doesn’t deal well with shooting, offensive debuffs, or control, so she may not be the best take all comers choice. That being said, there hasn’t been a lot of post cid data with her, the changes to champs, the stone, Amd the runebearer should really up her game, so it’s possible we’re all just distracted by madrak1 and haven’t realized how great she is yet.

This is the most take all comers list trolls have:
War Room Army
Trollblood - Ragnar
Theme: Band of Heroes 3 / 3 Free Cards 75 / 75 Army 0 / 40 Specialist
Ragnor Skysplitter, the Runemaster - WB: +30 - Trollkin Runebearer - PC: 0 - Dire Troll Mauler - PC: 15 (Battlegroup Points Used: 15) - Dire Troll Brawler - PC: 16 (Battlegroup Points Used: 15)
Fell Caller Hero - PC: 0 Lanyssa Ryssyl, Nyss Sorceress - PC: 4 Troll Whelps - 5 Whelps: 4 Stone Scribe Chronicler - PC: 4
Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes - Leader & 3 Grunts: 6 - Stone Scribe Elder - PC: 3 Trollkin Long Riders - Leader & 4 Grunts: 20 Trollkin Champions - Leader & 4 Grunts: 16 - Skaldi Bonehammer - PC: 0 Trollkin Warders - Leader & 4 Grunts: 17
it handles shooting, dudeswarms, jacks, mixed lists, has upkeep removal, scenario presence,, is hard to kill and cracks anything. It’s everything you want a troll list to be.

My question about them is are they different enough from fire eaters to justify the purchase? They seem like they fill the same roll to me.

1. I'd drop the fell caller. you have a lot of pathfinder from other sources and the feat at least gives you the possibility of an accuracy buff.
2. Doomie3 might have a problem with grymkin because they have the anti-healing arcana, and Ragnar's feat might not be strong enough to overcome grymkin damage output. I know Kolgrima is the answer to everything these days.... but she could be the answer, since horgle might have trouble with shooting lists and control feats. Maybe Guunborne or Grissel 2 could fill that role as well

Well after our update, champs and long riders got rebalanced to be in a good place. I'm running Ragnar with champs and long riders right now, and its working great. Ragnar mostly helps troops with his feat, but they REALLY like his feat, and a few strategically dug in long riders go a long way. Pulverizer on a brawler or Rok is a really solid bonus too. The other new tech is channeling through Mulg, so if you want to stick to Ragnar in POD, I've been meaning to try out a list with mulg and 2 bombers where you channel shockwave at heavies (or casters!) and then blow them up with the bombers.
I don't have experience with Madrak3, but there was some dude a few posts back that was running double long riders with him and loving it. The grissels would work great with them too.
Of course, the ultimate new tech is madrak1 with champs, in case you didn't know, but if you're feeling madrak3 or ragnar, there's tons of stuff to try with them.

I'd go with Borka2, the mauler, the axer, either the brawler or a couple lights, the stone and the bears. Borka2 is a good starting caster because he's not to complicated, he's tons of fun, and he's good at low point levels.
If you want to expand naturally off that list, i'd get some fire eaters and more bears. I know they're expensive, but what are you gonna do?

I’ve been running him in band of heroes as my sole battlegroup model and it’s been working really well so far. With the new stone rules you can lose the mk and still keep your caster fueled.

I'm a troll player, but I've recently started including a gremlin swarm in a lot of my lists. I've found there are a lot of games where it can hold one side of the board by itself, letting me concentrate everything on the other side. I can't tell if I've just had a string of games where my opponents couldn't deal with them, or if this is a common thing, so I thought I'd ask the folks with the most experience: How often do gremlin swarms shut down your opponent's scenario game because they can't kill them?
