Yesterday i sat down to dojo a list (i actually havent done that in a while). I had an idea in my head that i wanted Grissel 1 with a WW, cause Boundless charge and hoof it are amazing buffs for the WW. I also decided that i was going to try and use Boomhowlers (yeah... I know...) because if i give them Hoof It on turn 1, they actually get up the table fast. Calamity can also enable their guns, and the old MK2 saying was that if you can get Boomhowlers to do work, they are a VERY good unit. It turns out that the Boomhowlers are incredibly much worse than they were in MK2 (they had SPD 6, ARM 16 and 4+ tough that worked even if knocked down) but that is all in the passed right?
When i started to build the list though it just wouldnt come together. I wanted 60 points of dudes and at first i wanted a MK in there to crack ARM. As always, i found myself in the situation where i try to bend over backwards to alleviate the weakness of KC. In short, the points simply wouldnt work out. I wanted Bone Grinders in the list to enable Calamity and i just couldnt get every thing to work out.
I wanted Saxon in the list too, since Boomhowlers do not have pathfinder, and if they a were going to be a front line unit, i couldnt have them be hampered by the terrain that will inevitably be everywhere. A fell caller would not work very well (taking a fell caller as the third free solo would have made construction soo much easier...) since you cant have Hoof It and Pathfinder up at the same time, unless it was the feat turn.
The battle group started out as a Bomber and a Pyre to light up some FEs. That meant i was going to effectively pay 10 points for the Pyre though and that felt incredibly weak. The FEs were rationalized away anyway, and i ended up with Bomber + Slag. Then i agonized some more and decided that just because the Bomber is the best heavy in KC that doesnt mean that it is always the right choice. In the end i actually went for TRIPPLE slag trolls. This painted me in the corner of being good against infantry (WW...) and probably OK against warjacks, but a beast brick will be a big nono.
I had originally included Sluggers (those are good, right?) but i think that they would be left behind the boomhowlers and any infantry that they wanted to shoot at would probably be engaged by the Boomhowlers already, making it hard to hit them. I agonized some more and in the end i went for a extra WW. I also went for Pyg Lookouts. They help enable the guns of the Boomhowlers and WWs. Might not be worth it at all, and FEs might be the thing i need, but now we have lookouts. I actually like that unit but i never use them cause they never seem to really fit my lists...
So after all the agonizing i ended up with this REALLY strange hodge podge of a list:

So in the end, i have two lists that feels solidly "meh". Not only because they contain models that er probably not very good, but the whole exercise made me tired. EVERY SINGLE TIME i try to make a KC list i have a general idea in my head and then it doesnt quite work out when i try to build it. The lists feel weak over all because i spent so muck effort (and still failed) to make up for the weakness of the list. This doesnt happen with the other themes, at least not very often. I think the Warbeast restriction is the main reason, but even if we removed that we would still find that the troll shooty infantry is just not very good. I want to play the War Wagon and i want to play Sluggers, but the cost just feels too high. I might try this list out for funsies. The buffs on the WW still seem amazing and i want to experience it on the table.
