So had a pretty sweet time at Kingdom Con, got a bit farther than I ever have so thought I'd write about it. I qualified for masters Friday, which was great, got a day to watch people and talk, also got in grymkin demo game with Will Pagani (I won so there's a possibility he was playing nice), I love that army btw.. I might be getting a second army. Anyways as I'm finishing this game I'm watching Tom and Jay setup a game, Tom's running ghost fleet with a wraith engine run by everyones favorite pdenny, and Jay is setting up a sorscha rocket boat. I took a bit of interest because I'd been thinking about ghost fleet, thought maybe Jay had an answer or something... turns out he had no idea at all. I watched him contemplating just charging the battle engine with sorscha (legendarily bad plan) But it was probably his best shot (I think he just conceded instead). Jay was later trying to work on a list with Zerkova 1.. I like her but I didn't have enough games with her to bring her to the con. I talked to him about an irusk2 jaws list, and his version of the list had the two destroyers to go along with a spriggan/rager in the battlegroup. I was talking to a friend of mine afterward and we kinda came to the conclusion that I needed more magic weapons. Finally settled on switching butcher3 to jaws instead of wg theme, basically kayazy with the aforementioned spriggan and ruin, accompanied by the two marshalled destroyers. Irusk2 also in jaws theme was my second list, demolisher/jug 1 marshalled destroyer and double kayazy/double elims/all the snipers.
I played Thyron (assassination), then Two cryx. Gotta say, cryx is back with a vengeance. Cryx matchup 1 had ghost fleet, but with gaspy 1 instead of denny. He had 3 units of pirates, 1 unit of ghost pirates, a battle engine, 2 stalkers, and a node. This was legendarily bad for me, Gaspy1 is like some kind of horrifying god to kayazy. With his feat he can kill every one of them that happens to be within 14"'s so plan run away was in effect, I put SoD on the kayazy and ran them to the right half of the board where lich was not. I played butcher, so he was also running away.. I hate running away with butcher but gaspy can pretty much just spell him to death. Interesting thing happened early in the game, I'm not used to playing this list, and not used to playing ghost fleet (one other game so far up to this point). I realize after repositioning my destroyers and forge seers farther away that one of them was in range of the rifles. I think to myself "I hope he doesn't see how close that is".. sure enough he asks what its defensive stats are.. a tournament players way of saying "Kiss that thing goodbye". So 2 cras later and I have a destroyer without a marshal. Which is why I won that game.
I mean I could lie and say it was all part of some kind of mastermind plan or whatever.. but it wasn't. However he had just moved all 6 of his right field rifles into range of ruin and the kayazy. I had one good charge for the kayazy, so 1 down. Then ruin got SoD and RFP'ed the rest as well. Rifles dont come back from rfp (the rest do) so this turned out to be a good trade.. they're really the dangerous models the rest arent very good. Due to being down a magic jack a series of events happened that ended up with me having to contest with ruin in his zone, leaving me with a badly made wall of jacks in front of butcher because one of them couldnt run anymore.. because of that I ended up being the victim of a fairly even odds assassination, which failed.. which left ruin 3 inches from a focusless gaspy1.
so basically losing the forge seer won me the game.
round 3 was against a stranger cryx list. Double battle engine, ghost pirates, multiple machine wraiths, Rathe, and inflictors for battlegroup. Run by skarre 1. After thinking a lot about this list I realize that until blackbane dies, I'm just going make life worse for myself by using troops in any way shape or form. Furthermore, jacks are pretty bad too because he's got 3 machine wraiths and can make more. I realize this after I've run forward turn one... so turn two I run away everything but butcher and ruin. Just for a sec, just think about this list.. it punishes you for troops or jacks, if you didn't bring strong magic weapons you're in trouble.. its mostly high defense so karchev is gonna have misses or have to boost. Ruin smears one battle engine which I know is just a trade, then skarre feats and wipes out ruin, he also kills a dog within battle engine range so he takes control of my destroyer and kills about 3 kayazy with it. I spend my next turn doing almost nothing but contesting and killing the few models that went corporeal with my eliminators. Butcher vengeances and kills 4 whole blackbanes and camps 5 because everything else is incorporeal and he cant kill them, or really high armor, or too far away. Next turn skarre comes in with the battle engine, attacks butcher and goes for a run.. not a very good one, but he does get the destroyer again with another wraith after killing the other dog.. he comes up real short on killing butcher though and skarre is now within that place nobody wants to be.. in range of butcher. Well.. at least it probably was. It was like a 30 minute judge call. Measurements were hard because he killed my last dog so no pathfinder, and the path was not evenly free of terrain.. so some places I was getting pathfinder others not, and it was really really close, and the engine was in the way because it had attacked butcher. After much deliberation it seemed that the path would work. A friend of mine mentioned how easy it would have been to just kill the engine first giving me a free lane, but tunnel vision is a thing. At any rate skarre died under the axe.
Last fight was against Dan, he was locked into mohsar. Final table masters, so you know.. no big deal, all kinds of adrenaline and stress that should not be associated with rolling dice and playing with plastic toys. Yay for feeling alive . Anyways, he had double wyrd, double pureblood, fulcrum, wild argus, tharn bloodweavers and wolves of orboros. Two flags scenario. Basically saw the game plan, get a guy next to me doppler bark and then kill me. I took Irusk2, I think it was the right choice, the demolisher is great against circle. I saw his plan to kill me with wyrds beforehand and dropped solid ground for a turn, which got a lot of kayazy killed but saved irusk from near certain wyrd gun doom. My plan was to kill all his infantry before he could use it to sands of fate to kill me, which I did for a couple of rounds. Then I saw an assassination run. Throw a bloodwitch at mohsar, shoot him with one good demolisher gun and a broken one, then charge with a battle lusted kayazy, then bounce another eliminator off a warpwolf. It was optimistic and I ran it anyway... came up two hits short after bricking an eliminators initial attack so it couldnt side step. Bottom line I needed one more hit I didn't even have in the plan. He had like 3 witches left alive at this point, so he of course doppler barked me and shot me to death as expected at that point. Attrition probably would've got me there in the end.. I should have learned from the earlier failed assassination against me. Bottom line mistakes were made, there were better plans to rely on. Dan won the game, super nice guy so a win would've been nice, but happy for him. Still I've never made it to the final table before, so Im quite happy.
