As seen in the Thread Documenting what's mentioned in the upcoming Trencher CID (Done by me), I think AKs might be more requisite.
Tough with Rise, with Feight Death, and possibly Dodge. That sounds pretty tough to deal with.

Game play wise, possibly.
But I'm not convinced PP knows what to do with AKs. They didn't put them in the black-ops-ish Jaws theme. They could (possibly) put them in the MoW theme, if that was more 'the future of Khadoran warfare' rather than just 'steam-powered suits' theme.
If not, they're going to struggle to find a place as themes become ever more dominant and new releases are included in books centred around themes. One unit with WA, two already known casters and a character jack (sort of) aren't enough for a theme.
They might end up like the Longgunners of Khador - effectively written out in favour of new models which fit into a theme.

To be quite honest. I see them on the rise already. They are definitly a meta pick and just lack a bit of support or access to a theme force (honestly I don't know why they weren't in Jaws, but I think that only means there is another place for them in planning) Atm I am even considering breaking theme for them, because of the pairing. I am pondering this list: conflictchamber.com/#b31b7c7w0d7t7teQhFhF7y8085Khador Army - 75 / 75 points (Strakhov 1) Kommander Oleg Strakhov [+28] - Behemoth [25] - Juggernaut [12] - Marauder [10] - Marauder [10] - Ruin [17] Greylord Forge Seer [4] Greylord Forge Seer [4] Orin Midwinter, Rogue Inquisitor [5] Assault Kommandos (min) [10] - Assault Kommando Flame Thrower (3) [6] as a 2nd list to Vlad1 rockets. Focus should be Cryx (not sure if Vlad or this list can handle GF) Clouds in general and all the lists that try to "heal" Makeda, Harbi etc. Mabe more of a local thing.

But they only have any value under Strak1... I can't see them being used with anyone else.

They have the most value under Strak1, thats true. The problem is they don't have much value to begin with atm, so Strak1 is the only place where they have barely enough to be played.
That could change with an UA etc.
Another problem is that they are allrounder. With no particular focus. Mat/Rat is even, some resistance, some teck etc.

Not unless AKs get hunter so they can get around the trencher's dig in rules.
They can barely hit them normally, they hit them even less when they dig in.

I like them with Irusk1 and want to try them with Vlad2 alongside shock troopers and a conquest. Before Legion of Steel I liked them with Strakhov1, but I prefer the theme now. Oh, they are one of the few units that can stop gargantuans healing Cheers, Dave

As in the assault chaps need to walk to be in range with the flamethrowers Ah well. Still, the flamethrowers ignore cover, and thanks to the alchemical masks can ignore the clouds even if the Trenchers have reposition. Shame we can only take three per unit. Maybe a good unit for Strak2 to throw Quicken on if you're facing Trenchers?

Sorry @soul Samurai fat fingers made me misspell what I intendet to write.
Quicken is going to be nice, but currently breaking the theme is a really harsh thing and sadly only Strakov1 has Veteran Leader AKs.
But if they are in the MoW-Theme they are going to have a place with Strakov2 for sure.
