I think Trollock touched on a lot of the points I wanted to cover. He seems to get here first and do that a lot.
I'll add this though. I think the answer you don't want to hear is people will play what is most competitive. If no themes gave equal free stuff people would take them exexpt in the few cases themes were stronger. I think if we had no themes and you took your grab bag of units you would still have the same problem of I keep facing madrak.netList. PP is into deep to get out of themes for now because models are balanced around being in them. The other thing players don't want to hear is that PP wants to make money. Themes go a long way to doing that, I bet the profit margins on solos are one of the best. That being said with flags being such a big part of the game they also "force" you to take an option to score them. Same way they have done a lot to encourage more balanced list.
My suggestion would be do what is most fun to you and if that is playing what you want over the strongest option there is nothing wrong with that. It does mean you might not be winning tournaments though. I know I've gotten sick of themes and agreed to play with out them before. The same thing might happen though if you are playing what you want you might face a broken out of theme combo. The best thing is to find like minded people house rule what you want and play with them. Don't be suprised if you disagree on what is "broken" and you each don't want to play against.
