D&D5? My group is still playing pathfinder, plenty of material to go with. Currently running a human paladin, albeit hailing from a noble family brimming with draconic heritage-enhanced magic. With me being the arcane-less black sheep :v Yup 5e. I’ve not played it much though I have tons of experience in 3.5 and pathfinder as well as Star Wars Saga edition. Much like war machine though, I’ve been unable to play over the last couple years. My lone 5e character was a Teifling Paladin. Was fun.

I'm a big fan of 5e for introducing players to the game; it feels so much more streamlined. I also really love things like the changes to cantrips, and the short/long rest mechanic meaning you don't rely on having a cleric.
As a DM, though, I feel like they have perhaps filed away too many of the edges. I keep finding myself pinching abilities and mechanics from 3 and 4e to spice up encounters or to make into cool rewards. Although 3rd and 4th ran for, what, 15 years between them? Compared to 5 for 5e so far.

I have very limited experience with it but I can comfortably say I like 5e more than 4e at the very least.
I really hope this game comes together. I’m very interested in playing my Pixie Druid.
Also it doesn’t help that I’ve been watching a lot of Critical role so. Between than and painting, my free time is entirely D&D themed.

4e's biggest problem was that it was trying to be an MMO.
Pathfinder and other 3.x systems have a lot of customizability and player "freedom" but a new player can feel lost.

I actually painted something today! I took the Steelhead Artillerist from unassembled to just needing it's top coat and basing.
Tried out a couple of the new citadel contrast paints doing it too. Their nice. Not magic, but handy. The flesh tone especially.

Nice. Amazing how hard it is to find time to paint these days.

Nice. Amazing how hard it is to find time to paint these days. Seriously. I've got to many hobbies taking up my time. Working on the Steelhead Arcanist now. Almost got him done. I have to say, he is one of my favorite sculpts they have done. Armored wizard with an eye patch, gotee, and cloak, rocking a freaking tetsubo and a "come at me pose." This guy rocks.

I got my first wargame game this year in on Friday, and it was 40K. I put my Dreadnoughts down, looked at the ranges on their weapons, and realized their range is equal to the width of the table. To be fair I did enjoy myself (was playing against a friend who plays Minions in WMH), but the game just felt so static. There really wasn't very much reason to move the models around very much, as once our shooty units were within 12" it was just a case of rolling lots of dice. A whole lot less interaction between different parts of your own army too. It just feels anticlimactic after a few years of WMH.

Yeah, honestly, tactics in 40k just come down to maximizing cover whilst keeping your firelanes open and just having good target priority.
To each their own but I just couldn't get into it anymore, it's why I sold my 'Guard 3 years ago, still have some space marines but they are gathering dust. It's been... Quite a while, back in 5th ed when I was subbing in in a tournament when I played my last game of that. So... 2011/12?

Quite a while, back in 5th ed when I was subbing in in a tournament when I played my last game of that. So... 2011/12? The thing is the guys here are really heavily invested in 40K and would not buy into another full wargame like WMH. Some of them might be interested in other games (one guy is talking Infinity, another Bushido) but there's so few of us right now that I'm worried about the group fracturing if we don't have one "main" game to share. Personally I want to start running Monsterpocalypse to try to get some new players as I believe it should be far more "new player friendly" than the games we play right now, but I want a couple of nice fully painted forces to use to draw people in and right now my very limited hobbying time is largely being spent trying to put together a decent sized 40K force. Well, I'm hoping to finish my first batch of Monsterpocalypse units this weekend, hopefully my first monster won't be too far behind. I've been wondering if perhaps some people with a bit more of a, I dunno, "military"(?) mindset might find 40K more appealing? You run large organised armies of fairly similar infantry units with lots of vehicles (including flyers) and make incremental gains while trading fire with a dug-in enemy. I guess that's arguably a more realistic depiction of warfare than WMH? Well, at least until you factor in Titans and Thunderwolves I guess?

I got my first Monpoc minis recently. Tyson ninjad me the hyper mode Defender X and Terra Khan. I mostly got them as an art project. I'm going to try running LED up inside them and then painting them so only certain parts so the glow. Hoping to make Terra Khan look like he's about to use a Godzilla style atomic breath.

Wait, are you saying they are releasing clear resin versions of Defender X and Terra Khan? That's great! Slightly miffed that those are the only two monsters I actually own right now... normally I would be all over an LED project, but I don't have the time these days. Ah well.
