Just been building/painting another big robot. "Me and the boys"-vibe: Those are some very nice models.

That sounds like a pretty miserable experience, all right!

Sorry to hear that your first game went so badly. I got introduced to the game a while ago and have played a few games finding it ok. I think that playing the basic rules, without orders or the reactor dice helped me enjoy it a lot more. Not worrying about command checks, the machine spirit taking over or the reactor suddenly going into the red makes the player feel much more in control. You cover a lot the problems in your write-up and I can’t fault your criticisms at all. The layout of the book for referencing is terrible and there are a lot of peculiar interactions that really make the game quite awkward to learn. (I’m sure I’ve been playing it wrong.) The things I like though you list as reasons for not enjoying it, making it a difference of opinion and there’s no right answer. Pretty much all my games I’ve used an app called Titan tracker for recording all the various stats, damage and model particulars. I don’t think I’d have enjoyed things as much if I were completely reliant on the cards they provide with the game.

The things I like though you list as reasons for not enjoying it, making it a difference of opinion and there’s no right answer. Pretty much all my games I’ve used an app called Titan tracker for recording all the various stats, damage and model particulars. I don’t think I’d have enjoyed things as much if I were completely reliant on the cards they provide with the game. Thanks guys, I appreciate you taking the time to read my write-up. We used an app called "Titerminal" or something. The name is a little unfortunate as it makes me think of termites, but I thought it was a very nice intuitive piece of software. My only complaint was that, in duplicating the Titan cards, they made the "pips" a little small, sometimes when trying to press on them I would accidentally hit the wrong one. Of course I was on my phone, a tablet would have worked better. I tried to be clear about my issues being subjective; I can understand how people could enjoy the granularity of it, the "realism" of armour weakening under successive hits etc. It's just personally I have come to appreciate streamlined games with novel mechanics that create depth through interactions rather than base rule complexity (I go so long between games these days that if the rules are too complicated I will forget them myself!). Take Monsterpocalypse for example. The base rules are very simple and easy to pick up, but it has some novel elements that are more than just gimmicks, the most important one perhaps being the dice themselves serving as a resource. And as you play you start to understand how the movements from power attacks and the interactions between units and monsters create depth in the decision making process. It is easy to learn, hard to master, sort of thing. To be clear I'm sure there's a LOT more depth than I picked up in my first game of AT, I realise it would be foolish to give up on the game just because I had a few bad rolls. It's just that every action was... slower and more burdensome than in other games. Moving? Felt like trying to walk through chest-high water. Attacking? Felt like I didn't have options (arcs mean by the time my attacking phase comes around there's probably only one model I can actually attack, and it might not have been the model I wanted to because it might have moved away) or ways of stacking power (there is something very satisfying about allocating focus and stacking buffs in Warmachine). I just... I didn't feel in control. And I typically hate when games take away the feeling of control (this goes for videogames too: it can be a very powerful technique, but must be used very cautiously). Anyway, sorry for rambling on. Point is, I am very well aware that my views are subjective, I don't mean to imply that AT is bad or "the games I like are BETTER" or anything.

Honestly I think you had way too many titans on the field for a first game.
Because honestly, counterintuitively, it's a skirmish game: There's a fair bit of crunch in the individual rules and the mdoels matter. Movement is, well, both plodding and plotting: you're setting up one turn ahead.
And having 5 titans you have to wrap your head around.
My go-to maniple setup for "advanced intro" games (ie. people who know their wat around wargames) is one side having a Reaver and two Warhounds (Ferrox) plus a pair of knights vs a trio of Reavers (Corsair).
It is faster and both sides have their own way of trying to play; the Ferrox maniple is super-straightforward: Get close, hit harder. The Corsair maniple has a trait that is easy to use but has a lot of room for mastery: Rather than side or backstepping at half speed, you do it at normal speed.
Ferrox is faster, Corsair has some staying power advantage because Reavers are sturdier beasts than Warhounds.

So PP has some stuff on 50% off for clearance. I was vaguely considering actually picking up a Victor/Conquest since it's now fifty-odd dollars, just to have one, but tbh I don't think I will. Funny thing is, the Behemoth (even discounted) currently costs about the same as a Conquest.
Someday I will assemble my Extremoth. Someday. Of course Behemoth won't have rules anymore by then. Maybe I should just assemble my Extreme kit as a Great Bear.

My ADHD has cycled me back to my CNC stuff. Specifically, I want to unpack my machine in the new place, but while doing that I randomly decided to resume my efforts (from a few years back) to integrate a micro pc (a BeagleBone) into my control box. Ran into a lot of trouble with cables and bluetooth keyboards, but in stark contrast to the last time I tried this the BeagleBone itself was surprisingly painless to get set up, and I was able to get it to connect to and successfully run the motion controller. Here's what it looks like right now: There's some faffing about with cables and switches still to be done (and for some reason I am really struggling with soldering right now). Ordered some stuff off ebay, some of it from China so that could take over a month to arrive. For now I'm going to finish a bit of soldering and then hopefully actually start cutting a project I was designing end of last year. Having said that, I spend a good chunk of yesterday redesigning my Monpoc dice box (which I think I've posted photos of here?). Every weekend I tell myself I'm going to do some painting, but then I get too busy with other stuff. Maybe next weekend. Fingers crossed.

Is it weird that Butcher4's shirtlessness makes me want to paint him like he has tank top tan lines? SO HEY TESOE DID YOU EVER DO THAT? Oh hey, that's a good idea. I hope I remember it if I ever buy a Butcher4. I just saw the new armored winter guard with shotguns and thought I'd pop in. Sorry that game of AT went poorly, but those boxes and jack parts look dope. I'm right this moment printing some chicken legs that I think I'm going to make into Baba Yaga's dancing cell phone stand. Also seriously thinking about printing a "Wardog" just for fun. I recently got to play Battletech for the first time. It was Alpha Strike. It wasn't really what I was looking for. To small of a model count on the board, and the units all felt very samey, expect for the occasional bonkers good one that was throwing off the curve. From what the guy that ran it said, it seems like classic Battletech fixes those issues, but also adds three truck loads of rules and complexity that I don't think I have the energy for anymore. I also got a job at my local California State University of Cal Poly. Which is dope, since I already help out with the three day gaming convention that the campus gaming club puts on every year, PolyCon. This year was PokyCon 40, and I ran 24 hours of a paint and take room, over the course of two days. We also figured out this year that PolyCon is probably the oldest continually running gaming convention around. Unless there's some other tiny local con that doesn't get much press and has been running for more than 40 years out there.

This forum is completely dead these days; I don't think anyone has posted in weeks, maybe months. I think the new PP community hub was the final nail in the coffin for Lormahordes. So check that out if you haven't.

Better than nothing I guess.

Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of the format they went with. It took a while, but I've more-or-less gotten used to it. I'm less active there than I used to be here or on the old official forums, although maybe I'm just less active in general. I really haven't been keeping up with news and new releases lately.
