Ok so I played Strakhov1 4 times this week. I tried 2 different builds. One being a Jaws variant and the other the list you folks recommended.
To start off my opponents this week weren't the best. Sure they were playing fine lists, but they were letting me get a whole lot out of overrun.
I played against Haley2 twice, Fyanna2 once and Lylyth3 once. I am not one for battle reports, but to give a brief overview: The conquest felt lackluster into Legion. Into Lylyth3 it basically had no guns and beside that it was actually ok. Fyanna2 was an absolute nightmare though. I didn't have enough activations so Admonition felt hyper punishing. Its guns were again pretty bad for triggering overrun and her feat was actually a timewalk.
In all my games I think I triggered overrun with my guns twice. Most of the time it was triggered by my jacks going in first and using overrun to get a second jack further in. If that is going to be how the lists plays than you probably want something more focused on attrition and less vulnerable to things than a conquest. It also feels like most guns are going to be worthless and you really only take them to force your opponent to play honest. Which is fine.
The Haley2 match-up was fine as well. You can't really stop getting alpha'd though. So the question becomes can two Stormclads kill a Conquest. In my games the answer was no, but it feels pretty dicey. I was left with sub 10 boxes both times. These games I felt the "Strakhov trap" where I want to go up close to get the enemy in feat range, but if I do that and fail I auto-lose the next turn. I ended up overrunning the grolar and using it to finish off a stormclad so I could walk strakhov back 6 inches. It's super hard to power a battlegroup and use overrun properly though and I feel that game 5 turn 3 I would probably end up throwing it because of that.
One of the haley2 lists I played against had a stormwall in it. That was a super hard game. I felt ok going into it. It was still in heavy metal theme. It was a game again where I felt I didn't have enough shooting to be dangerous to anything and too few activations to really deal with things properly.
I am going to try a variant I came up with where you drop the conquest for essentially 4 Marauders. It feels a lot better just looking at the list.
