So I bought myself a troll list based almost entirely on what models I like. Really felt like painting and krielcompany really did it for me. Bought hunters grim, jarl skald, the highwaymen and went from there. I would love to play with jarl skald but I don't know what to do with him, so grim it is for now (and incidentally it's probably the most beautifull kit I ever layed hands on, so no regrets there). This is the list I ended up with and am now painting.
Hunters Grim (25 + 75) Kriel Company
19 dire troll bomber 8 swamp troll 0 trollkin runebearer
4 Raluk Moorclaw 9 freebooter
15 trollkin highwaymen (10) 0 Braylen
15 pyg bushwhackers (10) 0 UA
7 trollkin fireeaters (3)
13 pyg burrowers (10)
10 2x thumper crew (2x3)
At first I didn't have Raluk, the freebooter and maxed unit of burrowers in there, but instead a warweagon, tinkerer and min burrowers. The idea of a big robot tagging along really appealed to me though and he actually meshes well with the thumpers. Battlegroup speaks for itself I guess, burrowers and fireeaters enable the feat amd I like thumpers for the P16 and knockdown. but I'll be honest, this is about all the thought that went into the list.
Given that this is it, how would you play with it? What can it do well and what should it he carefull of? Not so much interested in changing it as I am in getting the most out of it. Eventually I will probably get a warweagon and a glacierking, maybe a second swamptroll but that's just for switching things up and having some cool models to paint.
Edit: as a followup, has jarl skald any business running with this lot? He doesn't seem that wel suited to captain over a lot of infantry.

Cool list I like Grim2 as well in KC and with Highwaymen. Highwaymen are happy to get apparition, see through each other, and get snipe for at turn AND a damage buff. All good stuff. I think the list (or Grim2 in general) is pretty straight forward: It does'nt hit very hard, so feat get the alpha by shooting as much as possible, and brace for impact Shooting Troll lists have a problem with Colossals, high arm, many heavies and stealth. That is typical Cygnar, Khador and Cryx. I agree about Jarl. Grim2 runs this list better imo. Jarl is a weird caster, but maybe good in a combined arms SotN list(?).

Jarl works very well in a PoD beast brick.
The list here looks ok i guess. You will not like incorporeal or stealth models though.
I guess what you wanna do is to use the feat to alpha as hard as you can, and then try and play a game where you are up on points. Hope they didnt bring too much ARM, since you arent super well equipped to handle that. Always keep your eyes open for an assassination. The feat helps a lot, but you probably have to burn it early. If you can do something crazy like toss something at a caster with the free booter, just shoot with everything you have to follow up and hope it is enough. By then you might have lost a lot of models or be engaged, but apparition and slip away both help with that a lot.

I high armor list is going to be a nightmare to face against with this list, so you’ll have to be very intentional about how you deal with enemy heavies.
You’ll have to land mortality on them first, then knock them down with a thumper, then combined fire them with the highwaymen. Something to keep Grim from being knocked down would be a huge bonus (earth’s blessing from an Earthborn or bouncer is most common). Otherwise a way to block line of sight (clouds) or gain concealment (chronicler because Grim2 is a unit) would be incredibly helpful.

Yes a lot of armoured boxes will be an issue. I figured facong 2-3 heavies is perfectly fine, and that it's worth sacrificing the runebearer early to slap calamity on something and put those burrowers to use. Ten of em are really scary under the feat and that spell.
More heavies than that though, tricky. With all the different ranges on the guns, all the tough and a mix of small and medium bases I do think the list can play an interesting jam game, but that's something Ill have to work on. Can't believe I forgot about mirage and slip away. Iv been thinking a lot about calamity and mage sight, but those abilities will help a lot with this. Are highwaymen the place to put that?
The freebooter stops KD, but us it worth putting a def 16/18 lock in b2b to get that I wonder?
What types of matchup would allow for me to keep the feat in reserve? The ones where assassination is the safest bet I guess?

Out of KC Theme, Grim2 can field the Chronicler and then doesn't mind being KD-ed as long as he is out of opposing Charge range. With Tale of Mists from the Chronicler, Feign Death means only blasts, e-leaps, dX model spells, can incidentally damage him. Watch out for sprays targeting things behind him. In this theme, Stealth, on a Warlock/Warcaster is dealt with via Mage Sight, but only via Battlegroup, and that means Grim must be close. I will often play with Mirage on Grim2 to allow the additional 2" PRE-move, which is 2" more range on that critical Mortality/Mage Sight effect. Repo 3 provides for a Trap, and space for some intervening model(s), aka Highwaymen, for defensive positioning. Mage Sight loves the 2" range extension from the Runebearer. Delivery of the Freebooter/Thumper combo appears problematic, but if you pull it off...fun! Use the Swamp Troll to lure an opposing heavy closer? Match-ups against many opposing infantry would be when I'd be more likely to use the Feat earlier, for the improved to-hit buff/range buff against many less armed models. I'd reserve the Feat in match ups against heavier ARM models, trying to ignore them as I attempt to get a bead on the opposing warcaster/warlock with enough assets for a good chance at assassination. POW 16 (Mortality-enabled) Slug guns, POW 18 Thumpers are our highest (un-boostable) damaging guns and won't do that much against multiple ARM 20 models, so the assassination run is almost always the better, if not 'safest', bet. (Side note: Eyeless Sight via Mist Speaker, after CID if it remains, will be an aid to Kriel Company lists. But really, give us Reinholdt already! )
