...sword.
Now that I hopefully have your attention...
Can we settle something peeps?
It pops up every now and again and knocks me for a momentary loop. Back in the day before Ret was anything close to 'new hotness' and closer to 'rented mule' there was this slightly more populated and official forum. On said forums there were make believe moving mechanical objects given gendered pronouns. It pops up in community pages/here on occasion, and in the latest NQ, where Disco is given a male pronoun. For some probably long lost reason Disco was mostly referred to as she, her, or it back in the "Why wasn't she Ravyn's character jack, wouldn't Rahn want a friggin' node?" days... (To be clear we are talking mk2, like first book post Forces). The rest of the stable largely got he, him, or it but it doesn't matter do what ya want cuz there's a bunch of each.
I find myself internally thinking of Hemera as a female jack as well. Anybody else feel like they're both 'she,' whereas Imp, Moros, and Hypnos are 'he' and the rest are largely 'it/whatever' or has my neurosis stepped up a notch? Does anyone else even remember referring to Disco as a female?
I realize I just assumed our character jacks genders. I hope no one, my pewter/plastic models included (and most importantly the dice I roll for them), was offended, I apologize in advance.
TLDR: I feel like Disco used to be referred to as a female on the PP forums and while reading this page and in PPs own literature I keep getting thrown by male pronouns for Disco, can we agree as a community what gender the character jacks are please?

Hey man, as a person with a [well treated] mental illness, I can say that if you aren't being prescribed something, you should look into it. Unless there's a fluff piece out there, about how the 'Jacks reproduce, I'm going to have to say they're genderless, and the He/She/It/Gender-Identity-I'm-Not-Aware-Of-But-Respect-A-Person's-Right-To pronoun is as relevant as calling a Ship "She". That said, Discordia follows a typically female naming pattern, with the "ia" at the end. If it's referred elsewise, I expect it's the [very olde-fashioned] use of genderless "he" where "it" feels unsuitable.

I believe some of the use of She came from the Greek Goddess Eris, whose Latin (Roman) name is Discordia - the Goddess of strife.
And as mentioned, 'ia' is often an ending for feminine names, such that those more familiar with that linguistic quirk would more associate it thus.
But to each their own, doesn't really make a difference *shrug*

In Germany, I think everyone is referring to Discordia as "she", while all other Warjacks are "he" (in german, the pronouns do not line up with genders, the "he" here is genderless or maybe male when referring to characters). I think that mostly comes from Discordia being a goddess and that kind of makes you assume the jack would also be a "she"

This was all pretty tongue in cheek but it DOES mess with me a bit when I'm so used to Disco being referred to as a she. Maybe it's my inner hipster ruminating over my early mk2 cred and I should just move on. Meh, to each their own gender. Seems like a decent way to run things for humans, why not jacks?

Discordia is a goddess, so Discordia the myrmidon is a 'she' in my mind. Moros is a god, so Moros the myrmidon is a 'he.' Otherwise I usually think of myrmidons and warjacks as 'it.'
Maybe they're like ships and deserve gendered pronouns, but I can't think of any object other than ships that gets a gender in English, apart from personifications of nations. Certain objects can have genders if their owner gives them a name (for example, B.B. King's guitar Lucille) but there's no universal rule for it.
If warjacks have gendered pronouns then it's almost certainly a quirk of culture in the Iron Kingdoms and has nothing to do with contemporary language. The other option is that giving warjacks a gender is simply an impulsive choice made by the writer with no broader meaning.

Personally I refer to our jacks by the gender of the god/goddess the represent. Making Discordia a she and Moros a he. Some of the more general jacks like griffons that can really be either get an it.

I think of warjacks as "it" first and foremost and will usually refer to them as such. If not, I would use the gender of the deity for which they are named.
If I played against someone who referred to Hypnos as "she" or Discordia as "he", I would certainly notice (and likely try to correct/enlighten them).
I guess Latin grammar makes Imperatus a "he", then. I never really considered Imperatus' gender before.

Imperatus means to Rule or command in latin, I tend to think of Imp as a him mainly because its not a female name Like Discordia or Haemara, and its Vyros personal jack.

I've always referred to Discordia and now Hemera as 'she' because of the goddess' they're named after, but I believe PP always refer to Warjacks as 'he' when they bother giving them a gender. Most of the other factions' character jacks have more immediately masculine or aggressive names; Ol'Rowdy, Ruin, Deathjack. Protectorate is weird because of their naming convention of Thing of Idea.

So aren‘t Charakter Warjacks just Special, because the Personality of their Warcasters rubbed off. I believe Seacat said something about Inprints being echos of the Users in the cortex of a given warjack. If you want to press Gender on a warjack i guess ol’rowdy or discordia would be male like their casters. On their own a Steam-/Warjack would have no kind of gendered attitude bar a few quirks. Im no native speaker so sorry for my bad english...

Im no native speaker so sorry for my bad english... Sorta. There's basically two types of character jacks from a fiction standpoint: Old jacks that picked up personality over time and new jacks that were custom built as prototypes/specialized builds. Often the old jacks will end up having parts added after the fact to take advantage of their particular personality quirks. Those quirks can come from the personality of their controlling warcaster (like Black Ivan being protective) or just from age and combat experience (Ol' Rowdy and Drago for example). Drago is just really old, has centuries of combat experience, and his cortex was never high quality in the first place so he's basically just insane. Rowdy was just old and stubborn, he was given to journeyman warcasters to show them that sometimes jacks don't listen but Stryker ended up getting along with him. All of the character warjacks in Retribution (save Hemera maybe, I haven't read her fluff blurb. I suspect she's the same) are custom build jacks. They were designed to a specific warcaster's preference and thus reflect their combat doctrine. It's not clear how much personality any of the character myrmidons have, though I believe there was mention once that Iosians don't tend to let their cortexes form much personality without getting wiped. If I remember correctly Vyros did have Imperatus' cortex built to be more aggressive.

The only part I can add to this is in the new book, Hypnos is described as being based an older cortex design giving it more personality quirks than many other Retribution warjacks. If you ever read the fiction in Wrath, you learn Hypnos does seem to have more personality described than our other character jacks. It definitely comes across as similar to say Ol' Rowdy or Black Ivan etc.
