The rune idea I took from IceShadow on the old forums. He would use thicker purple Cryx runes. I utilize thinner blue elvish runes.

Wrapped up my Scavenger with a custom (hacked together) flight base. Asphyxious2's battlegroup is now complete. I feel like I've improved with my iron armor, but need to work on the gold more. Base will be bare until I do a "global" pass with winter grass and a new snow mixture on all of my models. nightmareempire.wordpress.com/2017/11/03/painting-scavenger/

They look good, but to be honest the photos look a bit dark. Have you considered boosting the brightness and/or contrast in a photo editing program? That and perhaps photographing in front of a slightly darker backdrop?

I really like those soul trappers! Tartarus is pretty cool too but something, I’m not sure what, really appeals to me about the soul trappers.

The Soul Trappers look great, the blue really works well. Tartarus looks pretty good, but he feels a bit too "busy" to me in these photos, if that makes sense? For example it's a little hard to see what's going on with his face. Might just be the photos of course.

The face is difficult to get a good picture of due to those large tusks. And it IS a fairly busy model in that I focused on individual components rather than the model as a whole. He has a lot of little details to his armor and I tried to work with all of them. We'll see if things turn out better once I swap to a black backdrop and 2nd light source.

2 months later, I finally have another finished model. The Inflictor, which I've added to my Dark Host army. I'm not really happy with the poison vials, so I will gladly take suggestions on how to fix them. Also went a lot heavier with the battle damage, rust, and paint chipping on this one, which I AM happy with. I attempted a new black backdrop for my lightbox, but it was a complete flop. Wrong material type and not enough lights. So the following pictures will be without it. nightmareempire.wordpress.com/2018/05/03/painting-inflictor/

The photos aren't bad, probably thanks to the natural lighting.
The model looks good, the glows are pretty cool. I like how you've got strong blue and green areas, then the combine in a teal one: it's like you're telling a story, describing how the weapon works.
The vials look good from some angles, less from others; I don't know a solution to that.

Once I figure out what to do with the glass, I'll make a second pass on the Inflictor. Maybe experiment on some plastic bits first. For now I need to finish up a Slayer and Darragh Wrathe for my army. Then I'm going to do a second pass through ALL of my models. Give each one some individual flair, more chipped paint, more rust, add glowing runes to things, and clean up the colors. One of the faults I found with my color scheme is that almost everything looks the same from the back angle when putting them on the table. I shouldn't have to search for my models during a game >_<

Love the blue glow, that Inflictor looks pretty slick with it. Glass vials with liquid can be tricky, I just finished painting the Whelp with the bottle and tried for a transparent golden ale effect and that was probably the hardest bit to paint for me. One thing that might help is more variations in contrast maybe...does that make sense? I did some Googling and the best tutorials I could find that explains what I mean is this one: eyeoferror.blogspot.com/2013/01/painting-realistic-fluid-filled-vials_7.htmlCan't wait to see more stuff painted too, looks great!

That's a really nice article, though I would argue he's "cheating" a bit by painting the empty areas black then photographing against a black background; I would like to see what those models actually look like on a table to get a more realistic impression of how well the illusion works. It's still a cool effect he has of course. Personally I prefer to finish glass or gems with a gloss varnish rather than trying to paint the reflected highlights on; just personal preference I guess. Also that last photo in the article has a really nice glow effect too:

@nyar Thanks for the tutorial link. While I'm a bit hesitant about the black (as soul mentioned) I did get some great ideas for improvements out of it.
@soul that is a really nice glow effect on the dragon. I may need to take some notes on how he follows the contours of the model around the light source. I also want to switch away from using ink based glows and go back to regular paints. While I can get some rich blues out of the inks, it's hard to get those intermediary colors.
I also had attempted to pick up some gloss varnish.... but I ordered the wrong item. Accidentally purchased gloss GEL. Completely 100% different substance and usage. So that will have to wait.
