What kind of bases do my fellow trolls have? I have poked around pinterest and facebook, but not found something I am super satisfied with. My thoughts so far are:
1) I want one theme to unify everything. I can't go snow themed, as not all stuff is Northkin. I can't go earth themed, for the same reason. I want something neutral.
2) I don't want to have to paint it. I want a glue only method of base.
3) A lot of what I see is the basic sand + 3 sprigs of grass. I don't think this really captures what it means to be a troll.
What kind of bases do you guys have?
(Sorry in advance if they should be in the painting forum)

1) I think even non northkin stuff can be snow based if you want that... 2) I think this is a mistake. Even if it is just sand with a coat of brown wash it will look SOO much better than a glue-only base... 3) I do a variant on this (see pics in my signature), but with lots of flowers. I do not know if you feel like trolls like flowers, but i think it looks nifty

Maybe I am spoiled from the snow. But it sure was nice to plop some snow and be done. I hate breaking my glue, putting on a base, priming, painting, then re-gluing model. I usually limit myself to ~4 hours total for a warbeast/warjack, so if it takes me 45 minutes to do the base, its eating into a lot of my painting time. 3). Hahaha I love your painting, very nice!!!! Flowers are kind of funny. I might consider flowers

I have rocks made from cork board+sand+grass turfs on my base and I think it wont take much time to make them. I also base the model straight to rocky bases. Painting base is primer - base color - wash - drybrush highlight.

Maybe this wouldn't work for every single model, but you can:
1) chop up used sprues and leftover chunks of sculpey and such to make piles of rocks 2) prime them and paint them gray 3) glue grass flock into the cracks between the rocks 4) wash the whole thing with green ink
It will look like a pile of mossy rocks. You can cover the whole base with this, or make a small pile next to some grass tufts or flock, mud mix, tree stumps or logs, mushrooms, water effects stuff, etc.

I use ballast and elmers glue. Base sandy colour, sepia wash, drybrush, done. Its very high contrast with my Troll scheme and stupid easy to to do. I generally prime it, but honestly i've skipped that step once or twice and never had an issue.

Mixing fine and coarse sand is a brilliant idea.
I've started to use cork board for the base then apply sand around the edges to cover the base. For painting it's 4 easy steps: prime, base, wash, dry and it's done. The cork provides a big flat surface for gluing or an easy place to stick in a pin for those unbalanced models.
I go a little bit overboard and apply a 2nd layer of glue on top of my ballast to prevent any of it from chipping off, but it's not a necessary step.
