Hey Fellow Trollbloods, I am headed to my first small tournament on April 22nd. I know I am far from ready, but I know I am going to have a great time. To prepare, I am creating a post (two per day) to discuss the top 3 casters and lists that each faction may have. To do this, I am going to view the tournament casters and lists from www.discountgamesinc.com/tournaments/ and post an overview. If you disagree with the 3 casters/locks I choose please feel free to post about another to look out for. My hope is that at the tournament I can learn what faction I will be playing against and pull up the advice against each faction/key unit/key model. For example: I have personally played against the protectorate MANY times. The first several times I played them the Idrian Skirmishers (and UA) KILLED me. They repeatedly took out entire units, heavies, etc. It was brutal. The past three times however, I have managed to keep them at bay. The last game I had against them they were barely effective. To anyone playing them I would suggest you run away their prey target, run to jam in melee, kill the UA and stay within the stone. This tip might be totally obvious to an experienced player, but it was not to me! Those are the types of things I'll be looking for. My Drop ListsDoomy 2 - The Mark List Mulg Mauler Mauler Mauler (will switch to an Earthborn once I buy the model) Earthborn Axer Krielstone max + UA Janissa Whelps Whelps Grissel 2 Bomber Bomber Mauler Mauler Axer Bouncer Krielstone min + UA Dhunian Knot Janissa Whelps Whelps What would be your strategy (list drop and key units/models strategies) against the following casters and lists. Vlad 1 Conquest Marauder Marauder Winter Guard Rifle Corps (min) Winter Guard Rocketeer Winter Guard Rocketeer Winter Guard Rocketeer Winter Guard Rifle Corps (min) Winter Guard Rocketeer Winter Guard Rocketeer Winter Guard Rocketeer Winter Guard Rifle Corps (min) Winter Guard Rocketeer Winter Guard Rocketeer Winter Guard Rocketeer Winter Guard Mortar Crew Winter Guard Field Gun Crew Jozef Grigorovich Karchev Juggernaut Juggernaut Kodiak Kodiak Marauder Marauder Marauder Winter Guard Rifle Corps (max) Winter Guard Field Gun Crew Winter Guard Mortar Crew Winter Guard Mortar Crew Battle Mechaniks (min)

I think grissel will do well against the infantry. The winterguard are not blast immune and grissel and the bombers will take them apart.
Also your stuff will be def 14 against shooting and magic with grissel. The pow 10 blast damage will do next to no damage.
But keep in mind that I am not the world foremost player. I play mostly casual with 3 /4 tournaments a year.

I would go grissel here too. I developed my grissel 2 (similar to what you have) to be played in to karchev, and all that blast damage will be neat against all the infantry. Vlad is dangerous though since his stuff always roll extra dice and pick the best. Those rockets can all of a sudden spike damage really hard. He is totally possible to knock down and kill though. If he casts Wind Wall, only Grissel can shoot him, but that may very well be enough. If he casts Blood of Kings, he will not be casting Signs, so it is a win either way i think.

Just to help me learn here let me ask... what makes Grissel 2 not work well into a Protectorate jack list but work well into a khador jack list?

PoM has the Choir, which can do one of three things for their Warjacks - +2 to all damage rolls, Cannot Be Targeted by Spells, or (the most relevant in this case) Cannot Be Targeted by Ranged Attacks. Trolls in general struggle with shooting PoM Warjacks because their "magic weapons" mostly come in the form of the stone's anti-incorporeal bubble and whatever the Warlock has.
Also as an aside, I find it hilarious and gratifying that you named your Doom2 list after me.

You know there are tons of people running it now. Lol. For good reason too, it works! Glad to put a (forum) name to a face (watched the scrum podcast).
That magic attacks clarification explains it perfectly. I have always had a tough time playing against PoM with shooter lists for that reason. Glad to know that won't be true against other factions.

Well it is true in a limited extent with Vlad who has Wind Wall but in general PoM is going to be the biggest problem in terms of needing magical weapons.

Does anyone see the sorcerer as a possible solution to PoM jacks?

It would only help as an attachment on a ranged unit. I don't see any of our ranged units having high enough pow to include it in a list. I'd rather utilize Borka or Doomy 2 and just out threat them. Enliven can mess with that though.

As long as there is no Book of Menoth then headbuts can deal with Enliven very easily.

What the others have failed to mention is that Kovnik Jozef Grigorivich (Kovnik Joe amongst the Kommanders) is part of what is going to make one of the WGRC squads work well - he will give that squad a +2 to hit. The WGRC with the Rocketeers is a dangerous combo because they both have RNG 14 and the Rocketeers get an extra D6 damage to the target directly hit - the Khador player is not really counting on the AOE3 to do much for him. The Mortar is there to provide *long range* fire support while the Field Gun is there to knock down heavies.
Don't discount Vlad1 in his ability to polish turds - that Conquest is going to be brutal with Signs and Portents. The Marauders are under-appreciated in general, but that will stop when one of them combo-slams a heavy into another heavy, or the 2 of them go up to a colossal / gargantuan and proceed to tear him apart with their extra D6 damage.
One other thing about Vlad1 - if he fails to destroy you with the army under Signs and Portents he can switch gears from Turd Polisher to SPD9 MAT10 Combat Monster when he casts Blood of Kings. Blood of Kings makes Vlad1 *especially* dangerous in melee - right up there with any of the Butchers.
This army is designed to blast you off the table with everything in it to be a destructive ablative armor that can deliver Vlad1 to an assassination if the army doesn't do it first.

These lists offer a good example why i'd probably play doomie2 out of tier if i brought him to the table. Having Rok chew through all those winterguard is just too delicious and opportunity to pass up.
