Well this is a positive thread but also an interesting one. What in your faction isn't necessarily most powerful but best designed?
Something that really makes you say "Man this Feels Just right". Something that follows up its core idea and executes it well. If poor execution results in it being higher power then that's still a failure on the design front.
For me its MOW shocktroopers. They genuinly feel like...Shocktroopers. A Change in Spell Selection helped, but they work excellent as a shielding unit for whatever you want delivered. I combine them with Iron Fangs to make an oppressive wall of metal coming at you. Electro leap just stop right at their shields, and if THEY survive they can also do some solid damage.
One unit, and a Drahkun took down a Prime Axion once with Vlad 2 over the course of like 3 turns. Twas glorious. There was 1 survivor by the end...He died to the Iron Mother....But then she died in a epic dual with vlad.

I really like the Hydra for this in Ret. Stats are good but not extraordinary, point cost is fair, but the combo of Focus Battery and Focus-Powered turns it into something special. Kinetic Capacitor combined with Forges of War might be a touch over the top.

It changed very little, but the Angelius is still the best non-character beast in Legion for a reason. It really captures a serpentine dragon with firebreath, and the addition of a Bite is mostly fluff but occasionally useful.

That is a tough call, I have a few.
The storm raptor is currently my favorite model and piece. A giant lightning bird and it really has that feel. Swoops in, blasting whatever, and with an electric energy field around it hurting anything that hits it.
The revenant crew in Cryx are one of my favorite units. Dead zombie pirates that don't stay dead. They really have that feel of cursed pirates doomed to serve for eternity. And they have a lot of pirate fun rules like gang and a gun.
The mountain King or the mauler. Just the living embodiment of a large rage monster though I lean towards the mountain king with its ability to just heal back up wounds and seem to be nigh invulnerable.

It's amazing how much better the MK is in MK3. Likely the best designed piece in trolls. For Legion, it's probably Tyhpon. He's worth every point and works well with a large number of casters.

Id say the Warwitch Siren in cryx. Shes always doing something and can contribute in a variety of ways. shes not cheap enough to be an auto include in everylist but not so expensive you regret spending the points.

Soul Hunters. Great unit with flaws. Fast & Accurate, but fragile & don't hit hard. With casters that can cover their weaknesses they're great, and do their jobs without being overpowered. With casters that do nothing for their weaknesses they're typically left at home. They're a good unit that, with the right caster, does the job you need them for without invalidating other good options.

The Desert Hydra. Able to rip and tear DAMN near everything to shreds with in faction support, and cam take a few hits wbile being able to regenerate, but is costed appropriately and still had its weaknesses.

Dawnguard Sentinels imo are an amazingly designed unit (some people scream OP but they are not cheap). They bring the hitting power, durability and accuracy that is necessary and provide a nice sold unit that can engage a variety of targets and do well in the heavy armour meta I see so often.

I would say the Centurion in cygnar, It is really one of the hardest models in the game, and is a great beatstick. Properly costed too.

They are an example of failed design IMO - all bling and no particular flaws, a bit like Flamebringers in PoM. From PoM I've always been in love with Daughters of the Flame - extremely cool, characterful and unique rules, perfect in their role, but with glaring weaknesses when you fail to use them well. |

There was a time I thought the same but because there is so much heavy armour on the field they excel at this role. Once you begin to see more combined arms forces the other units will emerge once again. Halberdiers are by no means bad and were my go to unit in mk2 when there were fewer jacks and were able to take down 1-2 in a game, where as now with 4+ warjacks being so common I need the punch of Sentinels. |

What exactly is this 'other melee infantry' you feel is being overshadowed? Infiltrators are a completely different niche (and generally bad outside Vyros1); Halberdiers see almost as much play as sentinels; Ellowuyr are specialized anti-infantry (and not released) Nyss/Invictors are both combined arms units that as best at killing infantry...what else is there for the Sentinels TO overshadow? I guess if after the Ellowuyr and Ryssovass get released, if they don't see play because sentinels, but are otherwise good, there might be an argument, but for now there's just nothing I see to support the contention. |
