I've decided that when I have multiple models I'm going to paint my second model outside of theme and do something I really like with it.
Some doubles I have are... Runebearer Mauler Bomber Earthborn Fennblades Champions
An example idea is to paint my Earthborn like a Uruk hai from Lord of the Rings with a sweet white hand of sauron right on his forehead.
Another idea would be Fennblades painted like the lead characters in bravehart. Stuff like that.
So, what would y'all go with?

I don't do anything too wild, but I do change the colour of the quitaris, or in the case of my champions, I painted a shoulder or kneepad on each one of them red for some unity, so I will change that up when I get to a second unit.

I don't have the nerve to do quitari, so I've painted all the loincloths the same color, and when I get a duplicate unit, their loincloths will be a different color.

However... even the shaky and "okay" painting didn't keep it from looking much better. It really gave the model a lot more character. I'd encourage you to go for it!

I rather like what I am using, which is a P3 beaten purple wash over shading. It's the unifying element in my army, as I decided from the first unit that my trollbloods vary in color, because I was going to get sick of painting all that blue flesh. Nearly on topic, has anyone tried painting tattoos on their models? How did it turn out? I've been tempted, especially for Borka, but, again, haven't had the nerve. It seems like another interesting way to differentiate units.

Oh nice. Very cool idea.
I'm imagining some dark blue for the color. Not straight black. I think I'm gonna give that a try on a few guys.
Just gotta learn the troll language now. Jk jk lol

I go for subtle differences between models/units. I am currently painting my second EBDT, and that gets brown "rocks" on the back instead of the gray i had on the first. For my second unit of Warders, i used heads from Champions instead (they have helmets). My first unit of Croak Raiders are pink with blue hands and feet. My second unit is blue with pink hands and feet. Then i make sure to mark the bases. I do a colored dot at the back of each base. Different color for each unit. I also mark the front arcs in a different way between the first and second unit.

I'm definitely going for green skin on my second Earthborn. I'm also pretty sure I am straight up stealing your base idea. Lol. I really like how those look.
