I loved Zuriel as soon as I saw him, and was one of my main draws to the faction when I started 2 summers ago. It's been fun, though disheartening, to see him go from infantry Burninator to warjack brain surgeon.
I started this thread as a ask two main questions:
1) Where and how are people using Zuriel these days?
2) Does anyone have thoughts on the development of the heavy Nephilim chassis?
1) I have a couple homes for our half-breed warrior. The first is with Saeryn in a list that tries to leverages Soldiers+Zuriel with generous application of grievous wounds, slams/knockdowns, and Blightbringer to slow or shut down the opposing heavies. I know Saeryn's not hot, but I like to mess around with her every so often and Zuriel really helps in this case.
The next list is also with Soldiers+Zuriel, but this time led by Thags2. I know that going out of theme sacrifices up to 22pts in some lists, however, it also locks us out of Hellmouths, which at the moment can't be taken in theme, who love his +2ARM and helps to ensure alphas.
I understand that Zuriel is probably our weakest character beast, it'd would've been neat if his animus was more useful and gave him something like Parry or Gunfighter, but for those of you that have used him successfully, any other ideas?
2) With the advent of Children of the Dragon being an army that locks us out all of our heavies, unless you're a Twin or Kryssa, does anyone else wish for a non-character Nephilim heavy that was somewhere in between Soldiers and Zuriel? We're lacking in the light/cheap heavy department since the Neraph is only marginally stronger than a Soldier for +3pts. I'd like to see something in the ~15pts range with at least PS16, Fury 4, maybe a cool Leadership ability that buffed other Nephilim. Maybe a give it Primal Magic(Nephilim) and the ability to have the animi it casts affect other Nephilim within X"'s? I'm just spitballing here any other thoughts?

Im trying Twins in Children of the Dragon with Zuriel as that is the absolute Tankiest Zuriel gets: Stealth, Banishing Ward, and Unyielding, in a list that definitely takes the BFS. If you like saying "Razor Wind!" 5000 times a game, it's fun.

Zuriel has only found a home in my Twins lists since MK3, although I do like the idea of him with Fyanna2 for high DEF and overtake synergies, or with Kallus2 for Overrun assassination angles. His animus, I think, is undoubtedly not great for an 18 pt character heavy that can be knocked down.
I've tried cooking up some cute lists featuring Zuriel paired with a few Soldiers under a warlock who can buff damage, but in my experience "cute" doesn't work particularly well in Legion, because the powerful lists out there are not cute - they merely crush you under their awesome power. And attempting to eschew a faction weakness through fragile circumstantial interactions hasn't turned out well for me (as you may have surmised).
The combat heavy gap between 13 and 16 points is a real and impactful problem in Legion (you can count the Seraph if you like, but I'm categorizing it as primarily utility). I'm hoping that there's a heavy Nephilim kit on the horizon that will fill at least two of those holes.
From a design perspective, Nephilim have revolved around battle synergies, having things like Overtake, Shield Guard, Precision Strike, Quick Work, Assault, Snipe, Telemetry, and the like - they want to be up there, in the action, and although they are a little inefficient in attrition, we tend to soak some point inflation for circumstantial benefits.
Nephilim are our only beasts that use weapons, so I think that affords some flexibility in their design. Some example concepts for heavies that I could see working include: A Nephilim with dual morning stars that has Combo Smite, a claymore-swinging heavy soldier with Righteous Vengeance, a two-handed axe wielding maniac with brutal charge and cleave, some serious naginata action with Defensive Strike, and one with a bat'leth-looking-thing that has leap and Berserk (how terrifying would that be from the perspective of a foot soldier?). PS-wise, I think at least 15 is necessary for a heavy, with 16 being in a much better place - although its role and circumstantial benefits could push that between 15 and 17.
There's a lot of room for things like Leadership [Nephilim] to help with fury issues, or a healing AOE of some sort, although I'd honestly rather have something that doesn't encourage spamming them. I'm also really intrigued to see more stuff along the lines of the Bloodseer - tapping into the magic that Nephilim seem able to harness; maybe that's where we'll finally get our character heavy for Vayl with Legion's equivalent of the Woldwrath's animus (Druid's Wrath), or just a regular heavy with Legion's version of Purifying Prayer (Brennos), Earth Magic (Bradigus), or Geomancy (Woldwarden - actually, I'm voting for that).
I'd also dig a light Nephilim with a net and trident, similar to the Buccanneer. I could also see a light or heavy with a fairly massive bow (think Orcs in LotR) that has a higher rate of fire, but maybe relegated to POW 12 or 13. I've really, really been feeling the lack of higher RoF hand cannons in Legion - I'm looking at you, Woldwyrd!

I'm with you on Zuriel being a favorite character beast. I was probably his biggest fan in MK2. I remember playing a lot of him with Thagrosh2 and Lylyth2. Predator's Instinct was such an incredibly awesome animus for Lylyth and people underestimated it on Thagrosh as well since his spray became super accurate with that 1 Fury animus. Good times!
Unfortunately these days I think he's mainly relegated to near auto-include status with the Twins (Twins referring to the two Warlocks paired together, not them as individual Warlocks) and Abby1. With the Twins he just loves both of their Bonds and they love having a high DEF heavy that can deal decent damage and benefit from Star Crossed. With Abby1 she simultaneously increases both his damage and survivability with Forced Evolution. DEF15 with Dodge makes him really hard to nail down and bringing his POW up to 18 lets him pretty convincingly kill heavies instead of relying on just crippling them. Personally I don't rate Children of the Dragon high enough to say that he's particularly good in that theme especially when you consider everything that you give up just to give him Unyielding... which only brings him to ARM19 and only if he isn't knocked down or stationary.

Interesting that you rate Zuriel as an auto-include with the twins, whiskie.
I can never justify him with the twins - even with a dual bond, the fact that the twins have no damage buff makes his pillow-fistedness an immediate disqualification for me. I find my twins lists very tight on points, and they certainly don't have enough fat for a pillow-fisted 18-point utility beast.

I find that the free Sorceresses in OoA often improves his damage respectable levels once you factor Precision and spray as long as you can get around his RAT5.
I also like Cheesebeard's idea especially the righteous vengeance and buccaneer. A dual Axe overtake, critical shred, and/or berserk would also be cool, though 1/3 of those abilities would probably have to come from animus.

I really like the model and wanted to play him with Fyanna as a swap for second Angelius. Maybe not optimal but working, tested 2-3 times and I liked it. Throw him with fury on 2 jacks and cut cortexes. He is easier to kill than serpentine warbeast but still nice. But then... themes happened. And choice changed from Zuriel vs Angelius and spell martyr to Zuries vs Angelius, spell martyr and 18 free points.. I will be working on twins soon so maybe there. But so far i liked the Blighbringer bulid from unded and he can't fit there. Ooooor: When time for crazy test happen: conflictchamber.com/#ba1b_-0tfdfuaKaOeKbbbbbbbecob9bkblLegion Army - 75 / 75 points [Theme] Oracles of Annihilation (Saeryn 2 & Rhyas 2) Saeryn & Rhyas, Talons of Everblight [+24] - Blightbringer [38] - Nephilim Protector [10] - Seraph [14] - Zuriel [18] Blighted Nyss Shepherd [1] Blighted Nyss Shepherd [1] Blighted Nyss Shepherd [1] Blighted Nyss Sorceress & Hellion [0(6)] Spell Martyr [1] The Forsaken [0(4)] Blighted Nyss Hex Hunters (max) [15] - Bayal, Hound of Everblight [0(6)] Version 2: min hexhunters and BFS

Interesting Whydak
I feel something die inside when I see the twins without raptors though, especially in a blightbringer build.
Still worth a look, although Zuriel seems better suited to a build without a blightbringer (and yes, as you know I strongly favour blighty with the twins)

I really like Zuriel with Thagrosh2. He is a swiss army knife of a beast, Manifest destiny tips the balance for one rounding a heavy in most instances, precision strike allows you to cripple key weapons on multiple jacks/beasts, he can rinse infantry with a combo of 2" melee and (if you judge it right) 2x Sprays. 6" plus flight really helps him get out of dodge on feat turn and Mat8 means he rarely needs to boost, making him super fury efficient.
I wrote about my Thags 2 list in the tactics thread started by Lanz, I play a 50pt variant where I will drop Typhon in preference for Big Z.

Be sure you aren't cheating if your reliably getting those sprays off. He has quickwork but not gunfighter

I like Zuriel, always ran him when I played Saeryn. His Animus isn't good enough. It should be: Evasion. Duration one round or until removed. Target games Dodge, When target is about to be knocked down, may instead remove this spell, ending its effect and stopping the model being knocked down.
He would have to be knocked down twice at least then, and would give our casters a buff really worth casting.

The nephilim I want and seems possible wouldn't work as a heavy. Think about the "party" of Nephilim we have now. Bloodseer - Mage. Bolt thrower - Archer. Soldier - Fighter. Protector - Tank. The DnD party is almost complete, so the next one needs to be a Rogue.
Now, in the intent of Nephilim, utility and tactical strength over direct damage, what would be the most useful for a psuedo-combat model? I was thinking he could have a star action blind, some flavor of blight mist. Center an AoE 3 on this model that acts as a cloud. Any enemy model in the cloud or entering the cloud gets affected by blind. Now when you commit a soldier to carve out a cortex or spirit the enemy model is actually gimped without having to buy into our terribly scarce options for grievous wounds. Other than that give it stealth or prowl. Maybe back stab on like a pow 10. AD would be fun but Ambush more so. Not sure if the mechanic of an ambushing warbeast would be totally broken but likely if he gets flight. Maybe have him pick up the old glider animus for flight.
In terms of heavy, I don't think the idea of investing in a heavy to be strictly a support for lights is an approach I favor. If I have to pay that much for a beast that is just meant to buff weaker models. That's pretty sad (Looking at you Blightbringer). To not step on Azrael or Zuriel's toes though there's not much of a combat function it could provide. I'd love to see something tankier. A nephilim protector order that went above and beyond and somehow got way better armor and weapons. Speed 4 Def 12 Arm 20. Halberd with set defense. Innate poltergeist. No knockdown Animus. Just something to be an absolute brick to hold a zone and say "absolutely not" to everything else. A legion version of the Vigilant.

I want to see Legion get any kind of budget heavy that could be reasonably called a Beat Stick. Something akin to a Juggernaut or Nomad. No bells and whistles. Just High P+S and Low Point cost. I do love the Neraph but its really a light warbeast on a large base. I don't expect us to get anything like a Nomad for 11 points (because Fury mechanic) but something with PS17+ for 12-14pts would be a dream come true.
This dream heavy could be a heavy Nephilim, a new beast on the carni chassis, or something else new. I don't care.

I don't think we'll ever get anything quite like that simply because we'd probably stop seeing Carnivean chassis beasts almost entirely in that case. I agree that it'd be amazing but just don't see it happening personally.
