Thank you, see above comment Sure, call me out by name, and get pissy because I disagree. I guess we'll see soon if the mods care to allow trolls like you to remain. I'm triggered not because you disagree. People are allowed to be wrong. I got triggered cause you're claiming I'm repressing the way you play the game because I'm telling you not to be an ass to new players. That is toxic gasslighting. I called you out on it with more colorful language.

That's separate from any sportsmanship discussion you might wish to have. I doubt your interested in hearing my side of that argument though.

I doubt your interested in hearing my side of that argument though. you have 7 posts, 6 of which are in this thread shitting on either the very concept that some people might not want to fight against the top tier netlists, or shitting on people who suggest that said concept might be true. The last one is asking around for top tier lists. In short, we have absolutely no reason to believe you're anything BUT toxic in person and robotic in play. I expect wolfbane, and definitely myself, find players like you to be mechanically tough to beat, but ultimately static, boring, and worst of all offensive. It's a formula that tends to kill entire metas when more than one or two people conform to it.

That's separate from any sportsmanship discussion you might wish to have. I doubt your interested in hearing my side of that argument though. Your argument basically boils down to I don't want to help new players, So I'm gonna equate it to them not wanting to play the way I like to play and telling them to leave the game because of that. You're saying there is one correct way to play the game and the new players should go play 40k if they disagree. When people tell you're wrong, you retort with that they shouldn't tell you how to enjoy your game. Repeat ad nauseum. Honestly you're right, I'm not interested in hearing your argument. Because this thread is for people to discuss what we can do help new player retention. If you don't want to help in that endeavour then I don't know why you're contributing. Your argument isn't related to the core concept of this thread. The only real thing accomplished was that you got a visceral negative reaction from me. PS. I'm sorry you got dragged into this Provengreil

I don't get dragged into threads like this. I join them voluntarily. Fostering a culture of training newbies rather than driving them off is incredibly important in any type of game.

I always find it strange that the players that are the loudest about 'inclusivity', 'friendliness', and 'being hospitable to new players' tend to be the ones that default to the most toxic online behaviour when others disagree with then. Wonder if there's an actual reason for that correlation, or if it's just coincidence. sirbrokensword - I don't agree with you about new players needing to beat their heads into experienced players and top-tier lists. Nobody learns anything from getting rolled over and over with no real explanation why. However, I don't disagree that WMH is an intrinsically competitive game, and that it's not a system that accomodates the casual player easily.

As a beginner who waded through my share of defeats and few wins, I would say the biggest thing that kept me coming back was the same players and community. I admit that I have an appreciation for losing because I feel like I learn more, but I digress.
I was lucky to be in a community with several experienced players in my faction. And between theorycrafting lists with them and talking through the game with my opponent afterwards I generally felt great even in pitiful losses. My best suggestion is try to get to know them and their faction better as it will both help you teach them and your progression as a player. Try to have constructive criticism about their lists or positioning.

ok guys. I'm the one in the wrong for wanting a competitive game to be competitive... bye. No from what i'm reading you're in the wrong for expecting new players to get waffle stomped over and over by tournament quality lists and remain in the game. You think NFL players go full tilt while theyre in their kids local father/son football leagues? Or that they have their kids going through the same shit they do during spring training camps while they're teaching them the game?

I think we personally we are having trouble getting people to express the initial interest with the game.
Reasons for this might be cause we play on Monday nights.I really think we need to start ruining events on the weekend

Edit: it also has the benefit of being a place to hash out what kind of game it is before hand, so people don't showup with only their masters list to be fine tuned vs the new guy.

If your group is doing that, maybe that is why new players are having trouble. We have a Facebook page for that, but I think someone has been suggesting a groupme for that, too. We also have set nights that are store dependent.

I find a set night to be better, and I just bring my whole faction with me so I can play whatever list I need to. There's something about the atmosphere of the group that gets missed when it's just a meetup with no one else there. A pre-arranged match on facebook feels....sterile. Which, actually, is fine for tournament prep but not fine for casual play, IMHO.

Again, play smaller games, get people used to the rules, play down to their level of play...no game is created to be intrinsically competitive, but for having fun. Having a small list and being told you're playing bad models/cards/dice is never fun. Play the game from a new perspective. I am not saying throw out competitive play either, just remember not everyone is in it for the tournaments. Some people, like myself, are in the game for laughs, jank moves, and seeing what pinky and the brain idea will work today. Today I try to take over the world. NARF!
