Hi guys.
I am not a new player, but i have a local guy who plays basically all minis games i have heard of who has started dabbling in warmachine. He has brought a bunch of old starter boxes and some other things that he has painted up and he asked me for advice on how to build a list from what he has. The sad truth is that any list i build from what he has will be awful...
Perhaps i could get some help putting together a couple of lists using MOSTLY what he has, so i know what i can recommend him buying? He is willing to buy some new models, but it feels rude to suggest that he shouldnt use any of the old ones lol.
He has Kaya 1 and Kaya 2 as casters. Lets assume he would be willing to buy one more caster.
Warbeasts available: 2 Ferals 1 Pureblood 5(!) Wild Argus 1 Gorax
Units: Reaves (no attachment yet)
Solos: Wayfarer Night Witch
Its a bit of a mess as you see, But i am only looking for a couple of possible lists that are reasonable to play. My knowledge of circle (and especially the less played parts of circle) is not good enough to be the mentor i would like. Im guessing that we focus on Call of the wild with Kaya1/2 and perhaps a list with Tannith (one more battle box couldnt hurt right lol?) in wild hunt to get value out of the reeves?
Thankful for any help! /T

conflictchamber.com/#c8201b_-0W3T4O4O4B4M4z4z4z4z4z5g5gfF5f5fCircle Army - 75 / 75 points [Theme] Call of the Wild (Kaya 2) Kaya the Moonhunter [+24] - Feral Warpwolf [18] - Feral Warpwolf [18] - Gorax Rager [7] - Pureblood Warpwolf [17] - Wild Argus [7] - Wild Argus [7] - Wild Argus [7] - Wild Argus [7] - Wild Argus [7] Blackclad Wayfarer [0(4)] Blackclad Wayfarer [0(4)] Swamp Gobber Chef [1] Shifting Stones [0(3)] Shifting Stones [3] With those models, I'd go Call of the Wild, actually. With the above version, the only extra purchases would be two sets of shifting stones (used in this list for fury management) and a second wayfarer. The gobber chef you could take or leave, but once again it helps with fury management, is cheap$, and is our only 1 point option at the moment. Total about $30 new. The idea would be to send in primaled arguses to soften things up and/or barkslam them out of the way. If you're looking to adding a few more purchases, I would swap out a feral for a warpwolf stalker (magnetized!!!), And you could trade out the other feral for a second stalker, but then I'd swap out an Argus for a second gorax to protect primal and provide good angles to cast it. This is basically the list I play, except I use kaya3, which is not cheap but probably runs the list better. Kaya2 with ferals can hit from downtown, though (warp speed, hunters mark, Kaya's spell), and on feat turn you don't have to worry about her 12" control.

I'll buy into Devourer's Host and Bones of Orboros. Probably is the safe bet with rocks just out of the CID and Tharn as our next CID. Krueger1/2, Una2, Baldur2.
Truth is: every lists he can build with models he hown are awfull. The cheapest way for a reasonably good list are:
-1) buy Kromac 1 and a stalker -2) convert one of the feral into a stalker -3) play him in call of the wild
or:
-1) buy Megalith and Baldur2 -2) play him in call of the wild with a 3 warpwolves+megalith build
or:
1) buy a stalker 2) convert a feral into a pureblood 3) play kaya2 in call of the wild
Cheap usefull filler/support models are: swamp gobbers, gallow groves, shifting stones, one more wayfarer, wilder.

The question is what he is trying to accomplish. Is his Plan to participate in tournaments sooner or later? Is he only playing in his local store? Or even only playing against friends? If he is not trying to get tournament ready asap, I would totally go with the kaya2 list posted above. Kaya2 is really a fun caster who is doing pretty circleish stuff, with a) helping any beast to charge through forrest b) hit and run like no other caster can c) double up both of our signature "beast spells/animi" (forced evolution is somewhat like primal, while dogpile is a better huntersmark) d) denying enemy warbeasts movement (muzzle).
Definately not the tournament setup, but with all outstanding purchases beeing really cheap staples off the faction and the list giving a good idea of what circle is capable of I think it is really a good startingpoint to see if hordes and circle in particular is a thing for him.

I doubt he will go to any tournaments. Possibly the ones i organize, but the "buy as little as possible"-approach is probably the way to go. It is just not very fun to play games where you are less skilled than your opponent (since you are new) AND your list is awful. With a reasonable list, you can usually get more reasonable games.

Buy or convert a couple of stalkers. Got it

Yeah he really is best off buying into call of the Wild for now.
Honestly with Kaya3 5 argus might not be half bad. I second the Kaya 3 suggestion
I also second buying 1 stalker, but don’t build only as a stalker, magnetize the kit. Best choice I made was letting my Warpwolves kits be interchangeable. Honestly you don’t even really need magnets as the head and arm slots are super thick and stay in fine without them.
That’s probably your best bet for now. To potentially expand. He may want to start building for an anti Guns list. Woth that collection you probably want to dip into baldur2.
Purchases: Baldur2 Megs
List: CotW Baldur2 -Megs - 2 Stalkers (assuming he buys and converts) - Pureblood -Feral -Gorax 2 Wayfarers (proxy the nightwitch or buy) 2 Shifting Stones (these a cheap or easy to convert. My first Stones were literally just rocks on bases I painted with customs runes.) Feralghiest (borrow or proxy)
Plays VERY differently from Kaya and Gives him a solid answer into gunlines woth Def 14(18 behind the Wall with cover) Arm 20 Warpwolves.
After that...we’ll he probably wants to either commit to Bones or devourers host but that’s takes a lot of investment.

Buy or convert a couple of stalkers. Got it Only if the plan is playing Call of the Wild theme. Out of Cotw stalker is quite disappointing. Free sprint and +1 to starting roll make it shine. Freebies make his crazy point cost reasonable. If CotW is the plan I suggest Kromac1 (hit and run playstile, spells-hate, treath extention, accuracy buff+free charge), Kaya2 (double alfa-strike, massed stealth, strenght buff, treath-extention + pathfinder, free channeler) or Tanith (very well rounded with admonition and arm and def debuffs). And untill he get some pradice, keep him away from gunlines. Is very frustrating playing our living beasts against good guns.

well, Baldur2 can get them there. High Def and High arm typically lets them live on approach. But any other caster is gonna be an npe into gunlines for the most part
I really would encourage Kaya 3 over Kromac 1 for a new player. Kromac 1 has a lot tech that can be overwhelming to learn on its own, let alone with a brand new player. Warpath alone is so versatile in application and it’s incrediblt pivitol on how you trigger it, that spell alone takes a while to appreciate and get work out of.
Kaya 3 is straightforward. Just enough circle with repo3, and Stalkers for shenanigans, but not too complex.
Kaya2 has a little more depth to her but I have not played her yet so don’t know how her learning curve is to new players

One more vote for Call of the Wild.
1) The cost to expand is low: 1 Blackclad wayfarer, two stones. My second unit of stones is actual small pebbles with some green stuff molded unto them and painted. It makes the second unit very distinct from the first unit and was very cheap(bases/greenstuff). I've never had any problems with playing them in a tournament due to them being better for my opponent's understanding of the game as well. 2) Both of his current caster's and many other caster's can play in the theme. If he starts digging it, you can change the feel of the list pretty quickly with a caster swap. 3) CotW struggles with scenario. You might want to not push scenario's hard for a little while or play the two square/two flag/two objective scenario predominately for a little. Emphasizing the designed weaknesses of the list would be rough if you're trying to restrict model buying for now. If the game takes better than the others he's dabbled, this would need to be broadened with time.
Another strategy might be letting him borrow a unit of Pig Brigands/use the Reeves+Night witch for UA to proxy for infantry. Let's him start to understand how infantry works both mechanically and in scenario.

baldur2 requires Megalith, an expensive character jack x.O; Kaya2 requires a little bit of skill to fully utilize, but she can pull off some serious stunts by herself, especially when you include some shifting stones in there.
Considering you have so many argi, I'd probably go the CotW or Devour's Host route. Bones is Circle's current best theme but he only has 1 model that fits into it -.- ha ha. Both CotW and Devour's Host are fairly competitive, and I've seen Devour's Host lists run at tournament level fairly easily. The models he'd need to buy are Kreugar1, a unit of bloodweavers, tharn ravegers + UA, Sentry stone, Tharn Ravenger Shaman, shifting stones, n he should be good on beasts. Our circle player uses 2 units of ravegers but I doubt it'll be necessary. The key is chaining off heart eater during the raveger's UAs mini-feat. You also put Lightning Tendrils on the bloodweavers while they have killing spree from the nightwitch. Those two things will completely obliterate infantry and low arm spams, leaving the rest of your points to be directed towards more hearty heavy hitters. Use Dopplar Bark from the argi in order to auto drop everything's defense to 5 (it can't be avoided) and use a gorax to primal up some serious destruction. If your opponent is trying to hide his support or infantry behind obstructions or forests, pop Kreugar's feat and place the 3 AoEs, spread out, right on top of them like it wasn't even there; yep, you do not need line of sight for his feat, it just needs to be completely within his massive control range.

Kuririnad's advise is very solid, but if you have 5 wild argus you have to buy Kaya3.

This list should be pretty legit, and every model I've added, he'll use a lot.
