Fantastic discussion, good array of lists here!
Here is the list I ran on the weekend and will keep it this way for a few more games before tweeking again, its the third itineration of this list since the CID changes went live.. really tried to make the MK work as I think he is amazing but he just doesn't anymore with Mulg being such a badass.
Doomy 3 74/75 PoD Rune Bearer (0) Mulg 22 Mauler 15 EBDT 14 EBDT 14 Axer 10 Bouncer 9 Whelps (0) Whelps (0) Shaman Kriel Stone + Elder Max
Mulg and the two EBDT form a three sided attack, leaves the mauler left at the back to mop up anything that survives.

Having 2 Maulers rather than 2 EBDT is probably better here. Then you can actually use your Maulers for fighting, and not just as a passive buff bot. You even have the one extra point.
Also, this type of list will be very bad against massed infantry. That is not saying you can never play it, just that in some match ups it will be very obvious that you HAVE to play your other list.

I tried to two maulers but missed the resilience and extra speed the EBDT get from the terrain.
Make the off list for infantry and there's no problem ;-).

Why are shamans so good with doomie3?? Because if you find yourself against unexpected infantry you can mini feat Signs and Portents and then send them in to spray or even Charge. Battle Wizard and then Spray.
They also provide a hit buff which is one of the big issues with Doomy3 (He doesn't have a Hit buff outside of feat turn.)
finally they provide a nice cloud wall which means you can stay safe. In some Cygnar matchups you can even use it to screen the stone and keep Doomy out in the open with the Storm Troll animus on him. Basically invincible as long as no cygnar jack is in charge range.
Having the ability to contribute in almost every matchup (I accept they are fairly useless against Beast heavy/NoN Fyanna2 Legion lists) is excellent.

I would absolutely go double Earthborn in this situation. The mauler wont contribute early, but that's hardly an issue if you have two EBDT's acting as forward power pieces.
The one argument in the Mauler's favour is that you can mini feat. rush him and then he can rage after the charge or trample for free. It's like a less good version of the MK trick. Not sure it's enough though tbh.

I was more in to the fact that if you have 1 Mauler, you need to play him safe, even on the feat turn. If you have 2, you can probably use both to full effect, cause they are not likely to be able to kill both at once. The second Mauler lets the first one do work and vise versa. At least in theory. I havent played him much, but i have played a LOT of PoD in general, and there is a big difference between playing 1 Mauler and playing 1. It is not like it is always better to have 2, but it impacts how you have to play the list if you have one beast who is essential for the rest of the list to function.

in my opinion speed is not the most important factor for this list. We are talking about D3 not D2. For speed add Lanyssa she will also give u a free charge which is also really nice and the +2. Like Arcaux said d3 offers the +Rush/Rage combo which is really nice and giving them the same speed as EBDT's . Mauler has +1 Fury and Grab&Smash. He will deal way more damage then an EBDT. EBDT are really really good especial at 14 points now but they are so good cause they can hold a zone and are pain to remove for your opponent if they have to come and deal with him.

Threat presence anywhere on the board any list/faction/scenario is really good and to have.
I think the less resources needed to make something work the better? The terrain boosting effects the EBDT gets especially from SR17 terrain placement gives it a leg up on the mauler in most cases.
