From the perspective of running dire trolls and our kings, when do you look to throw or trample?
Throw seems like it would be risky to succeed in three rolls to pull off the move.
It looks like trample could leave your beastie open to multiple free strikes.

If you need to clear a Juggernaut out of a charge lane to get the assassination, but your beast can't kill him by himself without significant resource sink, then toss him out of the way. Need to clear a zone, chuck that sucker out of there. Want to knock something dodgy down? Toss a heavy at it.

I trample when I'm being jammed and I need to get my beast somewhere. Alternatively I'll do it when I can get hit more models than I would be able to do normally with my initials.
Free strikes are always a concern but remember that the models you trample over don't get to make them so its usually possible to avoid them outright or minimize it to only 1 or 2
I use throws mostly for throwing heavies at hard to hit models like casters. You'd be surprised by the number of times you can land a heavy on top of a caster just by throwing it directly away

Our heavies with two open hand are quite reliable at the strength check for the throw, so you only really have to worry about the first roll if you are positioned so you can throw directly away. Boost it and you're probably good.
As for the timing, I still almost never trample (except for my Blitzer and even then it's usually just for range) but I do love the throws. One game recently I threw the different jacks at a butcher and landed them all. That was great fun.

Trample is amazing for Earthborn assassinations. No line of sight required. Doomy 2 makes this happen really well.

I have trampled into cloud walls to punch dudes a lot, too, or to let the (much maligned) Blitzer see it to shoot at models. Man I wish the swamp troll could take, or would get a heavy variant/character!

Tramples and throws are used in maybe 10% of all games, but when you use them it is usually for a damned good reason, such as an assassination.

Throws can be really good for throwing enemy warjacks and warbeasts out of an enemy warlock/warcasters control area, especially if they have strong defensive feats up which prevent damage to their models or their beasts/jacks have stupidly high armour.

That makes sense, but I've never noticed the opportunity and remembered it afterwards. I'll have to look for it more.

Lots of people tend to leave their beasts/jacks on the edge of their castwrs control range which gives you prime opportunity for throws.

I throw all the time. Usually though I'm throwing the game rather than models Real talk though, I won a game at the SoCal Open this last weekend because I was able to clear a path for Mulg to land on Denny with some amount of help from a Mauler advancing and throwing a Satyxis into another one. At another tournament I won versus Arkadius with a tectonic shift from Janyssa to set up a throw angle for a mauler to least disturbance Arkadius through a flag (Recon II) to where I could land an EBDT on him. In the Fyanna Matchup I have often thrown whatever they send in out of her feat range to kill it / triage with a whelp as the only frenzy target. I also use Tramples quite a bit with Doom2 as well. Whenever you have some heavies parked behind a forest and your opponent isn't kind enough to oblige you by putting their juicy targets in walk threat, or if they think that running a bunch of infantry in your face is going to make a difference. Heck, it makes cloud walls virtually worthless versus him unless you're so tanky that every attack counts. Sure throw and trample are narrow tools but they ensure that your opponent can't box in your options too much. I highly recommend trying them out in games and seeing what kinds of weird angles of play you can establish with them. You'd be surprised.

Trample to: -Gain additional movement after casting a 'self'-animus, first turn, or if attacks are desired after a move. -Going after an Ret AFG, or a Cygnar Centurion, or any 'un-Charge-ables'. -Trigger whelp spawning in a timely manner to allow contesting of two zones during your turn.
Throw to: -Remove a model from opposing warlock/warcaster's Control Area - Suplex? -Clear a zone for the CP lead/win. -Lure additional Focus allocation off a warcaster. -Position an opposing 50mm for a better slam into other opposing assets.
