Hallo, wonderful new forum! I'm a former MkII player, mainly Khador and Legion, and it's been... God, possibly five and a half years since I played? Just after colossals started being a thing. Stopped due to a mix of a poor community in my area and nearly dying (don't you hate it when that happens?). I've had an itch to get back in lately though, and I always wanted to try Trolls, so I bought Borka1 to paint up to see how I felt about the game still. And I'm optimistic, but I have a few questions and concerns, which I hope you guys can allay. And heeeeere we go:
1- Trolls in MkIII! I have a cursory knowledge of them in MkII from fighting them a lot, but no idea of how big the changes have been to them, aside from the little notes on BattleCollege. Is there any huge no-nos to be aware of?
2- Gunnbjorn, Borka1, Madrak2, Horgle. These are the Warlocks that appeal to me the most. Now I'm not a very competitively-minded player, but I don't wanna just flail around. How are these guys stacking up?
3- Actually getting a game. From what I see, PP seems to have withdrawn a lot of community support lately, and the player base seems to have shrunk to near non-existence in most areas. I'm in Somerset, UK, and the closest option I seem to have is to head to Cardiff, and that's not exactly viable on a regular basis. Am I right in worrying about this, or am I just missing something?
Cheers in advance all, and hope to hear from you in future!

I'll provide an answer from what I know but I didn't play in MkII
1. not entirely sure what you're asking but I'm assuming you're asking if there are things you don't do with trolls? Trolls have a hodgepodge of different models taht fill most roles in the game and as long as you're using them to fill a role they're designed for they'll perform alright. That being said we have some under performers in various roles particularly shooting and long threat ranges. Our infantry shooting isn't phenomenal but isn't bad while we have few but very good beast guns. Our threat ranges outside of a few exceptions can be on the shorter side when compared to other factions although our toughness coupled with various defensive buffs available can sometimes compensate for not being able to charge halfway across the table.
2. Gunnbjorn and Madrak2 are probably actually some of our more competitive casters with the current state of the meta (at least in my area). Borka1 is definitely a solid choice and can be built to have a good game into a lot. His issue, to me at least, is he just doesn't answer a lot of the problem lists that are floating around so as long as you avoid some of the boogeyman you should have a good time playing most anyone with him.
3. PP is still pretty involved in the community and its employees often communicate through their social media. The removal of the forums was mostly an attempt to get rid of some of the toxic environment that existed there and I'd guess they may have been able to save some money by using social media instead. I know the meta where I'm at took a hit in the transition to MKIII but it has been making a come back after a few of the players and I decided to make a concerted effort to build it back up. If you can find a few people in the area that are interested you might be able to do similar (assuming you have that sort of time or drive)

There were a lot of changes in mk3 -self animi hit trolls hard. No more buffing warriors. -Beasts now crutch on rage. Start your list with a mauler or mountainking. -PP's Community Integrated Development process has been a real bright spot in their community relations. My local is doing just fine. Trolls are about to get a bunch of much-needed improvements when the Northkin CID drops in the near future, as well as a ton of new models. Felt like they responded to community requests very well. Stone can generate its own fury, Borka2/Madrak1 reworks, Grim' feat fixed, point drops on pyres/earthborns/seakings, Long riders fixed, Champs got more pow and sanguine bond (and fixed that rule), Runebearer got better, Mulg is scary again, Rok discounted etc... CID improved the rage-crutching a lot; Mulg/Rok/Brawler/Sea King should make it feasible to go without rage in the list.

1- The biggest thing is themes. Pick a caster and a theme list that he/she works with and you will be fine. For more info on what themes work with what caster you can read my post about beginning trolls in the stickies.
2- Good news! ALL of our casters are totally playable. Borka 2 and Madrak 1 are not really playable at this moment BUT there has been a CID (sort of a public beta) on new versions of them and those will be official in the very near future (a month maybe? Before christmas for sure.). So pick your poison. The ones you have chosen are all very fine, and they can play very different sort of lists. You should not be disappointed I think.
3- This is a tougher one. Here in Sweden, much of the gaming takes place in local (private) clubs, and it can be hard to find them. We have a swedish site where tournaments and such are announced, and you could get in touch with ppl through that site, but i do not know how things work in the UK. You could perhaps travel to Cardiff and ask around. If they have local tournaments there, they might know what "mini-metas" show up, and that could help you get in touch with a more local community. You can always try the Community and Game Clubs section of the PP forums, but I wouldnt rely only on that. My best bet would be to get hold of some one, any one who plays in the UK and see if they can direct you to more and more local clubs.
If that wont work, you will have to start building a meta by yourself. It is hard work, and it is not guaranteed to work, but if you can gather up old buddies who used to play and hunt down some new ppl, you could build a new meta. I play in one of those, and have done for many years now. It was basically a couple of old gaming buddies that got together after many years, and we tried to bring as many nerd friends as we could in to the fold. we got a locale to play in and we stuck it out. We went to tournamnets and started meeting ppl from other metas and built a network. Now we host our own small tournaments as well as travelling (maybe an hour tops) to several other small tournaments. Our meta is not big, but it is stable by now.
Best of luck, and welcome back.

Just to expand on what Trollock said, there is going to be a rather large update to Trolls in the near future. If you look at the Krielatone now as a pain in Borkas butt, give it a month.

If you like Gunnbjorn and don’t own many trolls yet, look for the Hordes: Trollbloods All In One Army Box for 2017. Along with Gunny, you will get two dire troll kits and a max kriel stone unit. Magnetize the dire trolls and you are well on your way to having the foundations of most troll lists.

Sorry for the delayed response! Lovely stuff seeing that PP isn't in straights, I was genuinely very worried for awhile. Robble - thanks for giving me more confidence in my 'lock choices! I always knew Borka was more of a "party" choice, but I'm good with that. Gobber/everyone who mentioned the CID - just looked into it, and the announced changes, very very happy! Trollock - I'll go through your starter thread now, thanks for all the above tips :3 Gorsk - did not know about that army box! Might pounce on that, I literally only have Borka right now so that's a good aim for me. I've downloaded my card bundle, so I'm gonna examine some threads and then dive into list building
