I apparently like pain, since I chose to build in the Kriel Company theme for my Journeyman league without owning a huge base. I second the previously mentioned opinion that the Sons of Bragg are pretty good for this theme, since they hit harder than anything in faction. If we combine them with, say, Slaughterhousers, I think we might be able to get a good amount of work done without a huge base model. I don't get enough games in a week, nor do I want to play with enough proxies to test this out myself, though. Does anybody want to give it a try?

Well, you did just give me an idea. The lesser warlocks offer a loophole to get melee heavies or screening units into Kriel Company. We can even use Raluk to marshal a Nomad or Rover.

Trolls aren't that great with minion units IMO. Grim, Calandra and the new frost witch caster may appreciate them but in KC you're typically better off bringing a gargantuan. Wrongeye works well with Borka1 and Dahlia is decent with Calandra but I'm not sure those casters want to be in KC.

Kolgrima runs minions really well; her only faction effects are the owl and animi

I think that Slaughterhousers could do well in KC. What that list lacks is something to kill heavily armoured stuff in melee UNLESS you spend an arm and a leg on bringing a MK. Slaughterhousers have a whole heap of problems actually getting to the fight, but if you have them hang back and counter punch against any heavy that commits to you, they could trade up.

To be honest, I don't think Kriel Company is unplayable, even without minions. I just think we haven't unlocked it yet.
Some of our strongest warlocks are weighted towards ranged support- notably Gunnbjorn, Grim2, and post-CID Grim1. It allows some of our most poweful, if underplayed pieces, like fire eaters, sluggers, and the war wagon. It gives one of the most potent theme force effects for sr2017, +1 to go first.
The downside is that realistically, you have to take the mountain king. The upside is, you get to take the mountain king!
I haven't given a lot of thought to merc units to include, but something like slaughterhousers or brigands might go a long way.
As an aside, here's a kriel company list I've being toying with lately, which is crazy fun:
Ragnor Skysplitter, the Runemaster - WB: +30 - Trollkin Runebearer - PC: 0 - Mountain King - PC: 36 (Battlegroup Points Used: 30) - Swamp Troll - PC: 8
War Wagon - PC: 16 War Wagon - PC: 16
Braylen Wanderheart, Trollkin Outlaw - PC: 0
Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes - Leader & 3 Grunts: 6 - Stone Scribe Elder - PC: 3 Trollkin Sluggers - Leader & 4 Grunts: 10 Trollkin Sluggers - Leader & 4 Grunts: 10 Thumper Crew - Gunner & 2 Grunts: 0

Oh i totally agree that there is much to be done with KC. The problem though is that when ever i sit down and build a list i find that the list would be sooo much better if i could include some of my stple beasts, such as Mauler, Axer and EBDT. If those "normal" beasts were allowed, i think KC would be a really strong list. Now it is much more corner case. You probably take a King, but now you cant give it Rush (same goes for Bombers, who also likes Rush) to threaten that extra bit of range. You might have wanted a shield guard, or the earths blessing animus, but nope, cant do that. These small annoyances really add up for me at least. The WWs are very strong and interesting though, and i REALLY want to play them. The time for exploration of this theme will come, but i think that now BoH seems super interesting, and soon SotN will drop. This theme is the new read headed step child (that used to be BoH lol) that keeps being down prioritized. If only i had more time to play... I really want to play lists such as the one you posted. I think i would do it with Grissel 1 instead though... She is LEGIT with WWs

Maybe something like this? conflictchamber.com/#c7201b_-0D58c6jojqeC6G0k0mezez6ehUhUTrollbloods Army - 75 / 75 points [Theme] Kriel Company !!! Your army contains CID entries. (Grissel 1) Grissel Bloodsong, Fell Caller [+29] - Mountain King [36] - Pyre Troll [8] - Trollkin Runebearer [0(5)] Braylen Wanderheart, Trollkin Outlaw [0(5)] Fell Caller Hero [0(5)] Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes (min) [6] - Stone Scribe Elder [3] Northkin Fire Eaters [7] Northkin Fire Eaters [7] Thumper Crew [5] Trollkin War Wagon [16] Trollkin War Wagon [16] It is a serious possibility to change the MK for a GK + a chef, and to switch over to the NK elder for the stone. The list is very weak to incorporeal then though and i do not like that, so ill probably keep it as is

I have considered putting Grissel 2 into KC for my anti-infantry list, especially in Champions, where everyone is limited to the ADR. Something like this maybe? Deflection and Dash aren't good with the Wagons but are with the Fire Eaters. I do like the idea of putting Discord on one of the WW, then maybe swapping it to the second when the first dies. And Unyielding is pretty good on the Wagons. I'm just not sure about how this fares against something like Vlad Rockets... conflictchamber.com/#c7201b_-0D7e0r0rjq6G6R4g0k0mezezhUhUTrollbloods Army - 75 / 75 points [Theme] Kriel Company !!! I actually threw a KC list together that I really enjoyed last week:
Grim 2 Runebearer Bomber Storm Troll Pyre Troll 2x Fire Eaters War Wagon Min Sluggers 2x Thumper Braylen Wanderheart Max Burrowers Fell Caller
(To the OP, I'm really wanting to put bone grinders in!) This list was definitely not optimized, I'm sure I could find better ways to spend the free points than Wanderheart and a Fell caller(although both came in handy). I went up against Cygnar with Siege and was really worried about getting shot off the table between a firefly, stormwall, cyclone and Charger but even on the turn that he rolled max on every single variable shot roll, I had enough left to take out the stormwall and a ironclad from range and severely wound the cyclone. I probably got lucky on the stormwall because he didn't have arcane shield on it but I'm confident that I could have done it and sacrificed taking out the ironclad. I love getting to ignore models for LoS with this list! I was actually surprised how well the burrowers did. I didn't bother to burrow and just moved forward and dug in. Other than max lightning generators hitting them, they were quite the nuisance for my opponent to remove. They are still a bit expensive for my taste but I will probably at least give them a couple more chances on the table. I love the new sluggers. Even with two shot off the table right away, the one left over earned their points. I didn't even roll max shots each turn lol.
All in all, not a broken list but it made me feel like I had lots of options all game. I rolled slightly high on my toughs(40% or so) but I think even then I could have handled losing more. Might be tough if you run into a really high armor list though.

This is a really good point, hadn't really thought of it that way. Perhaps the addition of merc solos can help the list a lot- lanyssa can help with the loss of the axer, or a bokur if you really need a shield guard. I'm glad there's a place for Grissel1 though! Between KC and SotN, I think every single troll caster has a place now, which is probably the most exciting thing about being a troll player at the moment.

I have come to trollbloods because of all the great models in Kriel Company. As such I don't know anything about the strengths and weaknesses, I go mostly by model.
When I learned we can now include Raluk and a Jack I didn't hesitate, the idea of a troll gadgetfreak with a big robot in a band of highwaymen really spoke to me. And he can fix the warwagon. Ater some debating I chose the freebooter to accompany him, who doesn't gain that much from raluk but with all the access to knockdown has plenty to gain from KC. He leaves enough points to get a third free something (and there's plenty to want in KC) and the model looks fantastic.
