In SR2017, three scenarios have flags that sit on "your" side of the table and can be scored by solos. Flags are the easiest scenario elements to score since you only have to clear a circle roughly 9,5" in diameter, compared to the larger zones. The circle in question is also situated more on your side of the table than most zones, so you really want to score those things every turn.
You can send your warlock there to score, but that makes for static game play, since your beasts will be tethered to the control range. You will prefer to have a solo that does the job. Any solo will work, but you would prefer a solo that will still do its normal job while standing on the flag. You also want a solo that is hard to remove. I think the Widowmaker Marksman is probably the best choice in the game, but he will not work for beer (or what ever trolls use as currency in the fluff, i do not really care about that...) so we have to look elsewhere.
At least one of our themes has access to minions, and likely, all will in one form or another. Minions have lots and lots of solos, so lets check through a bunch of suitable candidates.
Alten Ashley
Right off the bat we find a pretty decent one. he has a good gun with a long range, and he can even reposition back after he shoots, so he could move off the flag and threaten anything within 17" of the flag. The drawbacks are that his defensive tech relies on there being terrain on top of the flag and that he cost 6 points which is a lot.
Bog Trog Trawler
He is pretty cheap and has a gun. He is not durable and the gun is not very good. Probably not the greatest idea...
Braylen Wanderheart, Trollkin Outlaw
She has TWO pretty good guns. They are short ranged, but if there are infantry around she can probably reach one and cap it and sprint back to the flag afterwards. She can only be played in KC, but she is free there, so she is a no-brainer there imo. Prowl is not the greatest defensive tech though.
Croak Hunter
Actual stealth is great, and the point cost is reasonable. The gun is OK, and he theoretically could use quick work to move back to the flag, but that becomes a bit too unreliable. It is perhaps more reasonable to assume he can stand in front of the flag when shooting, and then quick work back to the other side of the flag (well, diagonally at least) to be a bit more safe. Seems OK, sort of like a budget option compared to Alten.
Dahlia Hallyr
Yeah, she is a solo, and she is hard to kill sort of. she could possibly be relevant while on the flag, since the snake can roam off the flag a bit. She is expensive though, and paying so much for a model that does not add to free stuff might not be ideal. Calandra likes the snake though, so maybe?
Efaarit Scouts
A good gun, and reposition 5 allows for a huge area of impact. Survivability is not great though, and you are paying points for incredible mobility that you do not use. I think i prefer Alten.
Fell Caller Hero
Can shout fell calls at nearby units, and possibly even spray something. His survivability is not superb, but he has highis ARM and 8 boxes and tough. Not trivial to remove. His main selling point is probably that you will often have him in the list anyway, and you might as well try and score with him. He is sort of a McGyver solution to the problem... Use what you have.
Janissa
Can be free in PoD and has a short range gun. She has a short threat range, and is not super hard to kill. She feels a lot like the fell caller in that you might have her there anyway, but she is not super well suited for this job.
Lanyssa Ryssyl, Nyss Sorceress
Prowl and DEF 15 is above average defensive tech. She could contribute a bit with her spells, but she does not love being tied down. She will usually have another job, but she might rise a bit in stock.
Longchops
Pretty much a worse Alten. Slightly cheaper and the trap could protect him against charges (something most other options just die from) but i doubt he will be the one you reach for.
Northkin Shaman
Can be free, and has a ranged attack. He could also move off the flag and put up a cloud to sort of protect himself. He might have to do the job, but he is not great at it.
Saxon Orrik
Now here is an interesting piece. Pathfinder from 7" away or an OK gun, and 3" reposition to boot. Natural stealth and a 15/14 statline are all great assets in this role! costing only 4 points is very relevant too. Perhaps the new favorite so far?
Stone Scribe Chronicler
Can buff units that happen to be near, but he has really poor survivability, and the range of his buffs is probably too short. If you score with him, it is probably only once before he dies.
Totem Hunter
Sprint and reach allows him to threaten models within 9" from the flag. Natural stealth and good defensive stats are great too, but he is expensive and he does not like being so tied down.
Troll Whelps
Super-free solos that can score. They will die afterwards, but they will have to do this job many many times i foresee. They can not really do their job while tied to the flag, so they are probably a last resort.
There we have it. I think my favorite is Saxon. If we will be allowed to include minions in all themes, i will seriously consider him, especially in BoH where there should be targets ho wants pathfinder. I think it will be beneficial to have these types of models in ones list just for scenario purposes. Only the future will tell.
