I assume by your symbol/avatar that you play retribution/elves? My primary faction is Cryx and I made trolls my secondary faction. They have great flavorful models, a lot of fun to play, and have a completely different playstyle than my primary faction. I do not regret it. I would start with a caster you like the look of, add a heavy warbeast like the mauler, maybe two. Add a light or two like an axer, bouncer or impaler, maybe an elemental or two. Add a Kriel stone. Then go where ever you like.

Figured for a hordes faction I go for a completely different style. Hmmm I guess I want to be economical too (my pockets unfortunately dont run super deep) so I wanted to know which casters not only look cool but can be competitive too. I love the look of Madrak 3/borka 2/Grimm 2/Hoargle (i think thats his name??)

Madrak3, Grim2, and Horgle can all currently be built and paired to be good in competitive play. Borka2 has an errata coming in the next couple of months and with the new theme may be competitive as well. If you're trying to be economical the 2 player starter box if you can find someone who's interested in the skorne half is a very solid way to get in as the only model you're unlikely to play a much is the impaler.
Then you'll want to grab the krielstone + elder add some heavy dire troll kits to magnetize and you're looking at the start of a great many troll lists.
Alternatively there is the All-in-one box if you can find it although you'll be getting some models that are a little more corner case such as highwaymen, braylen, and Dozer & Smigg which kind of kills some of its value.

Trolls are my third faction, and I'm enjoying it so far. I have to admit, after the Northkin CID I haven't felt any motivation to play large-scale games. I can't wait for the updates for the Krielstone and Runebearer.
Anyway, a good purchase is the Battlebox. Ragnor is a very good warlock, and the lights each have value on the field.
After that, you'll want the Krielstone Unit and a Mauler.

I think Trolls will be in a great place for some one who wants to start the faction as soon as the latest CID (northkin) becomes official. ALL of our casters are very much playable, and ALL of the themes are playable, though not with every caster, and to a varying degree.
The future of this game is in theme forces so i would pick one theme that you like the look of: PoD (All beasts, but could be melee, ranged or mixed) BoH (Melee infantry) KC (ranged infantry and the war wagon) SotN (hard to quantify. Could be melee infantry, ranged infantry or a mix)
Once you have your theme, pick 3 casters that look cool. Ask for advice here just to check that you are not picking the "wrong" caster for your theme, but chances are that at least one of the three will work fine. Then we can give you some real input on what ways you could build your army.

Well hello there Adakai!
Funny seeing you here and not in the Ret area, lol. Trolls are my second faction as well. Best advice to offer ya is this; read the intro to trolls sticky thread. It was extremely beneficial to me when I first started. Also figure out if you want to be ranged, melee or combined arms. After that, you'll know what you want for your BG and support. Regardless of what you pick, definitely get the kriel stone with ua, a bomber and a mauler. Those three will be a staple to a lot of lists.
Also Trollock and the community here have lots of great advice to give.

I've been playing Ret for years and I feel like I have a really good understanding of that faction but I feel like I'm basically starting the game over when I look through the forums of Trolls hahahaa but thanks for the guidance! And thanks too Trollock - thats some really good insight/advice, I will definitely do that.

Trolls are my only faction. Ragnar is a good caster for a battle group. He can fight, has a respectable feat, and a good spell list. My others casters are Gunnbjorn who has a sick ass ranged game with guided fire you have a very accurate range game. His feat is good too, you will want something like a mauler with him to up your melee game. 3rd I have Grim Angus. He is ok, he has true sight and a rat 7 so I use him when I can to knock stuff over. I got Horgle 2 but only played him once so I can't say a lot about him, but his feat is cool just you need to set it up right.

I'd recommend any other caster(s) that you like, pretty much all of our casters can make decent lists with what you have. Also, the KSB + Elder unless you just forgot to add it to your list as it is our single most used support piece.

Madrak 1 is going to be entirely overhauled in the near future, so don't get too attached to how he plays now, but aside from that, what you have to start is a really solid collection. It looks like you have the solid makings of a Boh or PoD list with your stuff, so I'd recommend either Champions and their UA and a Fellcaller for BoH, or some of the key solos like Shamans and a Runebearer for PoD, and possibly another heavy kit, as many strong lists have both a Bomber and Mauler. All of this after getting the Krielstone, as Greibach mentioned.

Thanks for all the feedback! And I looked through the beginners guide Trollock and it was super helpful! Haha so detailed yet concise with information. Do you blog, trollock?
I forgot to mention I had also just picked up the KSB unit but I still need the elder xD
I'm definitely gonna try and get another caster and maybe another unit of something/a heavy kit. Have a tournament coming up and I'm hoping to use some of the prize pool money for investing into more trolls!

The elder for the KSB unit is a must in my opinion. Also, I am a huge fan of the mountain king, but for me, bigger is better. I played it when it was crappy in MKII just because it looked awesome. So definitely not a must have, but I certainly have fun with it.
Seriously though, looks like you have everything you need as a starter and then some. You should be good to go.
