Hey all, I tried searching about Legion of Steel but I did not find too much information. I am really interested in building a LegoS list and I am curious what people have been seeing when playing them. I intend to have Uhlans and Markov, Black Dragons, and IFP - both with their leader attachments. What caster do you think I should drop in here? I initially put Strakhov 1 with Torch just for fun, but I am thinking of Vlad 1 or Butcher 1.
Looking forward to your insights! -Z

I've been using Irusk1, because I bought the All-in-one box and it comes as a 50 pt. LoS list (minus the free points). My current 75 pt. list looks like this: | Khador Army - 75 / 75 points [Theme] Legion of Steel
(Irusk 1) Kommandant Irusk [+27][*]Destroyer [14] [*]Grolar [18] [*]Juggernaut [12] [*]Marauder [10] [*]War Dog [3]
Iron Fang Kovnik [0(4)] Black Dragons (max) [17][*]Black Dragon Officer & Standard [0(4)]
Great Bears of the Gallowswood [9] Iron Fang Pikemen (max) [15][*]Iron Fang Pikemen Officer & Standard [4]

Actually, I wrote up a little article about it too: Getting Your Commision the Khadoran Way----------------------------- I've had a lot of fun with the Legion of Steel, everything in it is very self sufficient and aggressive, so you can afford to play forward and push your opponent hard because there isn't any one piece (besides Irusk) that you can't afford to lose. Having 5 counter charge capable models has done amazing things for me defensively and offensively. I especially love the Great Bears, they frequently shred enemy heavies for me with Flank and Battle Lust. I don't have Uhlans or Markov because I'm poor, but Markov is a great piece to have so that you can counter charge through your own lines and you have a chance at knockdown too.

A lot of others will suggest Vlad 2 with as many solos and Uhlans as you can stuff in for feat turn, but realistically regular IFP schmucks will work just fine for feat turn if enough of them have a bead on the warcaster. If you have 2 units of Uhlans Vlad 3 might be fun in a thematic kind of way. How effective your army would be would probably depend on the rest of your army list. For Strakhov 1 I would suggest putting a Spriggan in the list for Superiority + Overrun + feat = dead warcaster. It's the oldest trick for Strakhov 1, it's kinda obvious, but I still love it. Vlad 1 and Butcher 1 - dude, you can't go wrong with those 2.

If I use Vlad 1 and drop signs and portents and say my first IFP goes to swing and I roll 5/2/2. I would drop the lowest, which would be a two, but is that still considered a critical hit? The rules say if you have any two dice that are the same on the attack roll, it is a critical. Just was not sure how that worked since you would drop the lowest.

No, if you drop a die it isn't considered as part of the roll. That's one of the disadvantages of "drop the lowest" you have no control over which die/dice to keep.

The most successful casters for it are Zerkova 1, both Irusks and Strakhov 2. What they mostly have in common is protective feat turn, damage buff (Zerkova gets pseudo damage buff from dispell and ghostly) and pathfinder.
The important model combos I think are: bring shooty jacks, go in waves with tactician so back line can unjam front line and allow it to charge further.
My last list is: Irusk2 -2x Demolisher 2x Kovniks 2x Fangs with UA Markov Bears Uhlans
It's close to what you have and would work under any mentioned casters. I don't think using Vlad 1 or Butcher 1 is optimal, their kit seem inferior in the context of massed fangs. Vlad 2 may be good, the list will become a glass cannon without tough, but he can make those Uhlans hit really hard.

Achoo! (Read signature)
I've only played Legion of Steel with Strakhov2, and I'm on about a five game win streak with it. Against the proper lists its really hard.

My list looks similar to the one you were running. I do not have Strak2 and do not know when I will see about getting him. Once I do, I will keep him in mind though.

Only caster I play Legos with is Strak2 and he is basically made to run it. Won a small tourney with it a few weeks back. Last Stand Great Friends into any caster is fun times, I just love throwing a fistful of a dice at them

For non-Steam Roller scenario games where you are just throwing an army down on the board and going at it, it should be fun! In a more competitve, Steam Roller scenario the army might have some problems, depending on the scenario and who you run up against. Run it a couple of times and see how it fights. Then change Vlad1 out for Butcher1 and run it a couple of times and see how it runs.

If I like the way the army plays, maybe I will just pony up and buy Strak2. This force seems like an army that should be fairly self sufficient running in small groups and not so warcaster dependent. The way I see it, the Black Dragons can go out on their own and do their thing. The IFP with the Kovnik can control whatever they want to play with. Then the Uhlans and Markov can be the quick strike unit, hopfully taking out something important before the bulk of the army gets downtown. The Great Bears should just follow one set of pikes down the board and hope to do some damage. The jacks are almost extra with the Grolar giving some added threat range and the Juggernaut sitting back to protect Vlad. I could definitely see where Irusk 2 could do some work with this army also due to the rule that lets your army move through itself, especially with countercharges and 2" melee ranges all over!

I've only played the list with Strakhov2 but boy does he crank that list up to 11. Quicken, the advance move and the feat combine in a terrific combo for scenario play. You can get in zones pretty fast and stay there thanks to the feat. It's not a list that can be dropped in anything because it has severe limitations, next to no ranged attacks and no good sources of magic weapons, but when deopped in one of its good match ups it will be incredibly efficient.
The next caster I want to try with the theme is Old witch2 with a double ulhan version of the list, with double ulhans, and advance moving unit of pikemen and windstorm to protect all that I guess there is some good scenario play to be had. The problem with the list is again lack of shooting and magic attack

zerfius umm sorry but my OCD is in overdrive. Is your list run by Strak or Vlad? Your warroom title is Strakhov/LOS but the Warcaster in the list is Vlad?

Sorry Growl, yes, I orginally had Strakhov1 as the caster but just changed it to Vlad1. I had not updated the name at that point. It is changed now so all is good!
