Hey y'all! I've played my first two games ever thanks to the local league. My first game I won on assassination after circle gave me a really rough start. I didn't document it well as I was learning how the rules worked and all that.
The second battle I lost to retribution on scenario my 3 points to his 5. I had a hard time figuring out how to deal with his 3 manticores and didn't know about the dawnguard sentinels. I'll write up the best battle report I can later but I'm going to go ahead and post pictures!

Pictures from the first battle. Unfortunately only took a picture before and a picture of the first turn.

I can pretty well tell what happened with the pictures. That Ret battle was an uphill climb from the get go, but the game was lost when the Mauler was gone. Without the mauler on the table you lose rage and your lights won't be able to hang.
It's very common in those matchups to have your mauler hang back until the end so you can still rage late in the game.
Congrats on your first matchups! Welcome. :-)

Yeah I knew once he was gone I had no chance at cracking armor. I was having a hard time coming up with a 35 point list. Looking back I probably should have had the Dire troll attack the jacks, moved the axer up to help the kriel warriors and taken a slag troll instead of the impaler. I hadn't tried the impaler yet so I wanted to see how he did. He got a shot at the warlock because the guy didn't know shoulder pauldrons don't block los that it's all about b2b contact. I also regret moving ragnor into the forest too, I'm still working on positioning everything correctly. My brothers almost done painting his ret army so I can practice with him.

And I see what you're saying about the mauler and rage I'll keep that in mind next time for deployment

When you're positioning remember a few things.
With units you want them to be able to charge, so their target needs to be out of melee with them and they want to be able to move 3" before they land.
With beasts you would prefer them to walk into melee to save the focus and get an extra attack (unless your attack is 4 off their armor, in that case you should boost damage anyways).
You'll often hear of beast bricks for this reason. Two lights can walk in out front with a Mauler just a few inches behind. The lights could be within melee range, but the mauler would be back a few inches and just outside the enemy melee range. Front like beasts like an Earthborn near a lake/obstacle or a bouncer that requires a higher point beast/jack to kill it are great options for the front. The mauler can often be raged by your caster and kill one and damage the other enough to live through its counter attack.

Great report! Love the purple scheme on your guys. I too prefer a non-standard scheme on my trolls, cause i want to be a hipster and all that... Tactically speaking, i can see many things that can be done better for sure. For example the Mauler. You only have one model that can really crack ARM (or help other models do so). That piece needs to be protected till the end game. You need to use your lights and Kriel Warriors to go in front and do the fighting early game so you can keep your Mauler through out the game. Try that next time and see if things work out better

Thanks for the tips and the color compliment! I knew there would be lots of room for improvement since I'm still new to wargames unlike my opponent so I'll definitely give those suggestions a try! I've also got a bomber waiting for primer and painting so I'll have at least one more heavy.
