There are lots and lots of more "obvious" lists that will be played in CID. Kolgrima and Borka 2 will obviously see a lot of play for example. Grim 2 with Raiders and HH (and possibly a GK to round things off) are also an obvious choice. I sat down and made a coupe of less obvious lists. The thing is though, i will not play until monday AND my first child should arrive any day now. I might not get much of an opportunity to participate in the CID as much as i would like. Therefore ill share some ideas, and maybe some one wants to try it out. lets see what you think.
Madrak 2
(Madrak 2) Madrak Ironhide, World Ender [+28]
- Rok (CID) [19]
- Troll Bouncer [9]
Fell Caller Hero [0(5)]
Valka Curseborn, Chieftain of the North (CID) [0(6)]
Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes (min) [6]
- Northkin Elder (CID) [0(4)]
Northkin Bear Handle & Battle Bears (CID) [9]
Northkin Bear Handle & Battle Bears (CID) [9]
Northkin Raiders (CID) (max) [15]
- Trollkin Sorcerer (1) [3]
Northkin Raiders (CID) (max) [15]
Hearthgut Hooch Hauler (CID) [18]
Perhaps it is pretty obvious, but i still like how the points worked out. Killing infantry is trivial and It packs a serious punch as well. It has a pretty nice ranged presence and is fast to boot. The list is weak to shooting though, and i think that will be a common theme for SotN lists.
Jarl
(Skuld 1) Jarl Skuld, Devil of the Thornwood [+30]
- Dire Troll Bomber [19]
- Dire Troll Bomber [19]
- Dire Troll Mauler [15]
- Runebearer[0(4)]
Troll Whelps [4]
Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes (min) [6]
- Northkin Elder (CID) [0(4)]
Northkin Bear Handle & Battle Bears (CID) [9]
Northkin Bear Handle & Battle Bears (CID) [9]
Northkin Fire Eaters [7]
Northkin Fire Eaters [7]
Pyg Lookouts (CID) [10]
A stone that can create some Fury on its own, and not having to pay for upkeeps sounds like something he would like. The Bombers get a accuracy buff from the lookouts, and that is my normal critera for wanting to play two. Bombers that hit heavies without boosting are good bombers. The bears will probably not abmush in this list, but will be easily delivered by the feat, or if you are lucky, you deliver them without the feat, and then protect them with the feat for a round. Could be very powerful!
Doomy 1
(Doomshaper 1) Hoarluk Doomshaper, Shaman of the Gnarls [+29]
- Glacier King [35]
- Mulg the Ancient [19]
Northkin Shaman [0(4)]
Swamp Gobber Chef [1]
Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes (min) [6]
- Northkin Elder [0(4)]
Northkin Raiders (max) [15]
Pyg Lookouts [10]
Hearthgut Hooch Hauler [18]
You have some seriously scary shooting here tbh, and with upkeep removal you can really soften up the things you want to kill at range. Again, the Lookouts help your stuff hit without boosting, making for a terrifying damage output at range. Also, Fortune on Raiders seems very good. You also have both Mulg and the GK who can make really nasty out of activation attacks with Guardian Beast.
Madrak 1
(Madrak 1) Madrak Ironhide, Thornwood Chieftain [+29]
- Dire Troll Bomber [19]
- Dire Troll Mauler [15]
- Trollkin Runebearer [4]
Swamp Gobber Chef [1]
Valka Curseborn, Chieftain of the North [0(6)]
Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes (min) [6]
- Northkin Elder [0(4)]
Northkin Raiders (max) [15]
Pyg Lookouts [10]
Trollkin Champions (max) [15]
- Skaldi Bonehammer [0(5)]
Hearthgut Hooch Hauler [18]
He still seems bad, but his feat really supports ranged lists, and he has good synergy with Champions. The look outs allow your things to hit fairly reliably even out of activation. If you can oil up two heavies with the HH, you can probably kill two heavies with the Raiders on the feat turn. Who knows? Maybe the synergy with the Northkin models is enough to make this pile of garbage playable?
Borka 1
(Borka 1) Borka Kegslayer [+28]
- Dire Troll Mauler [15]
- Rok [19]
Fell Caller Hero [0(5)]
Valka Curseborn, Chieftain of the North [0(6)]
Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes (max) [9]
- Northkin Elder [4]
Northkin Bear Handle & Battle Bears [9]
Northkin Bear Handle & Battle Bears [9]
Northkin Fire Eaters [7]
Northkin Fire Eaters [7]
Northkin Raiders (min) [9]
Trollkin Champions (max) [15]
- Skaldi Bonehammer [0(5)]
Made the list mainly because i didnt have enough bears in my other lists. No HH here, and the Raiders are mainly there to light up the FEs early on, but they will be good at contesting later on. You get extra threat on Champs and Bears and they should be able to murder anything they can reach. The Fire Eaters can clear the way, and if you just make sure to remind your opponent that those guys threaten 19" (to their AD-line) with boosted sprays, they will surely have an interesting first turn. Not that you WANT to blow the feat for that, but you can just casually mention it. Also, since you can light up two clumps of FEs easily enough with the raiders, you do not have to deploy them in "the wheel of fire" like you did when you used a pyre troll. That allows you to threaten a whole lot of space.
This list also has some anti shooting tech that is lacking in many of the other builds. I think the bears will not ambush here, but stay in terrain to be stealth, and then explode forward with the feat when the time is ripe.
Gunnbjorn
(Gunnbjorn 1) Captain Gunnbjorn [+28]
- Dozer & Smigg [18]
- Glacier King [35]
- Ice Troll [9]
Swamp Gobber Chef [1]
Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes (min) [6]
- Northkin Elder [0(4)]
Northkin Raiders (max) [15]
Hearthgut Hooch Hauler [18]
Snipe cycling on the HH and Raiders are really nice. +2 to hit for the HH is also nice, as is choosing the scatter direction. Grim 2 has a scarier alpha for sure, but here you get the anti shooting tech instead. Also, the rock wall is a super strong tool to have in many many match ups.
So, there you go. Some ideas if you cant come up with a list to try out
