This came up the other day in a game between and friend and me, and we need some clarification. When ragnor attacks with his hammer does the model directly hit also suffer the blast damage? I thought yes but my friend disagreed, mostly because I had just annihilated his circle army.
I had charged ragnor at his gorax that was near dead, also his only remaining warbeast. I boosted to hit and got the critical, even though no other models were in the aoe. Gorax survived the attack from the hammer with 1 box left, but I couldn't convince him that he would also take damage from the blast and he would die. So I spent another fury to buy another attack to finish it, which meant one less transfer opportunity. It made little difference though since only his warlock was left.
What's the ruling on that?

I looked up the rules on AOE Attacks in the rule book on the war room app. On page 52 it says "Once the point of impact has been established every model other than the model directly hit that has any part of it's base coved by the AOE is hit, but not directly and suffers a blast damage roll....." I haven't actually played a game yet but figured I'd look it up real quickly for you and if I'm wrong hopefully someone else will correct me as I'd like to know for when I play too, but it seemed pretty clear to me when I read it.

Doomdev nailed it. The model directly hit suffers full damage while others within the AOE take blast damage. The model directly hit by any AOE only takes damage from the attack once.

What you guys are talking about is a different kind of attack. Warhead centers an aoe on the model hit and "models under the aoe are hit and suffer a pow10 blast damage roll." The model you punch is definitely under the aoe and therefore, as my meta reads the card, takes the pow 10.

Oh yeah. I'm reading that as the AOE being centered on Ragnor and the effect not being a result of an attack. Totally different.

Ah that does kind of make sense, I've obviously still got a lot to learn about the intricacies of these rules. I guess some of that will come when I finally get to play, but I'm trying to get the basics down. Thanks for pointing out the difference!

The blast in this particular case is a secondary effect after the hit, so yes, as the infernal ruling Trollock posted, the model hit by the initial attack also takes a blast hit.
