I'm a new player building a Protectorate collection. I started collecting right when the pandemic hit, so I haven't been able to give the hobby as much attention as I would like. Now that the holidays are coming I actually have some spare time. Since the beginning of the year I learned of Brawlmachine which looks like a great format for someone just starting. Does anyone want to comment on their experience playing Brawlmachine as Protectorate?

There's plenty of options! What is important is to remember to put several things which can score different scenario elements. Flags and circular zones which can be scored by solos/units respectively appear in every scenario, so be sure to include those. I'd say an extra unit on top of the ubiquitous Choir and 2-3 solos are the way to go there.
I'd be careful with warjack-heavy forces (Amon in Creator's Might) as they may find it difficult to score and contest some scenarios. Minimum battlegroups (~the value of warcaster's Warjack Points) seem preferable.
Scenarios are VERY live, you basically have to score and contest every turn, so without some sacrificial pieces you may find yourself unable to keep up with enemy scoring.

What's the ideal non-choir unit? Initiates seems to be the favorite. Is there another viable non-choir unit? Is dropping choir a viable option?
Warcasters and warlocks with significant damage output also seem to be in favor. Are there any Protectorate Warcasters that check that box without falling too far behind in other aspects?

The choice is huge in both cases. For the first question - it depends on your Theme Force of choice. Units good in bigger armies will be good in Brawlmachine too! The only difference is, that I find myself using minimum sized units more often than in bigger games, so that I can have a more varied composition. I played with Idrians, Errants, Cinerators as mainline units and all of them were ok. Smaller units like Initiates or Deliverer Sunburst are also nice as they give you a scoring option while leaving more points for other stuff. There are a lot of casters with huge damage potential and that includes brawlers like Kreoss2/3 or Thyra, but also spellslingers - Severius1 is the first that comes to my mind.
EDIT: have you got any ideas for your BM force so that we can discuss them ?

I also like Knights Exemplar for a troop choice. The UA gives them a deeper toolbox in Brawlmachine that they really can't express in a 75 point game.

Seems like they would hit reasonable hard if they can be protected (Occultation?). What type of Brawlmachine list have you used them in?
