This forum is too quiet. I lurk but don't contribute enough and also don't really feel like I play enough either. However the last few weeks have been quite good and I managed to attend two local events. I like to take lists I devise myself but never practice with them enough to be particularly good with them. There will be no battle reports.
Just over a fortnight ago I attended a 12 person tournament where I took Sturgis and Maddox in Sons and Storm division respectively. Interestingly a quarter of the field was Cygnar with the other attendees with our faction fielding Caine3, Stryker1 and I think Stryker2. I managed to go 2-1, losing to Kromac Circle with Sturgis but winning twice with Maddox against Vlad2 Khador and Cygnar Caine3.
These are the lists I used;
Sturgis
Stormwall
Squire
Black 13th
Gunmages with CA
Max tempest blazers
Min field mechanics
Caine0
Ace
Bastion Falk
Gun mage captain Adept
Ragman
Maddox
Stormclad
Brickhouse
Sylys
Max storm lances
Storm blades with CA and 2 WA
min Field mechanics
Stormsmith grenadiers
Journeyman warcaster
Firefly
Stormblade captain
Firefly
Savio
Arlan Strangewayes
The circle game I lost by clock and definitely think that had it could have been a winnable game but at the same time both me and my opponent made plenty of mistakes that cost us dearly. The khador game was won on clock but both of us were down to our last seconds, however I was up on scenario and attrition. The Caine3 game I got myself mixed up who was Caine and who was a Hellslinger after having committed to the storm lances in a successful alpha thanks to my opponent failing to account for tactician letting me clear out his jamming rangers. He went for the assassination but came up 4 boxes short thanks to missing 1 shot from Caine who was the only person with any shots on Maddox.
Then this weekend just past I played in a smaller 6 person event. This time I took Nemo3 and Haley3 in heavy metal and storm division. Again I went 2-1 but this time I lost my final game rather than my first. Nemo3 beat Xerxis2 on scenario, Haley3 also managed a scenario win over Sorscha3 but lost on clock to Old Witch2 (Khador).
My lists were;
Nemo3
Ol'Rowdy
Thorn
Grenadier
Grenadier
Thunderhead
Centurion
Firefly
Squire
Trencher mechanics
Savio
Arlan Strangewayes
Haley3
Thorn
Stormclad
Stormclad
Squire
Max Storm lances
Stormsmith grenadiers
Min field mechanics
Laddermore
Journeyman warcaster
Firefly
Arlan Strangewayes
Savio
Stormblade captain
It's important to mention that I am terrible at clock management. I clocked myself in both games I lost and I have only myself to blame there. Haley3 is strong and very powerful in Storm division, a morrowan archon would probably work well as a replacement for Laddermore but on the whole I really liked the list. It was really easy to waste clock with it though. Nemo3 was a pet scheme to abuse his ability to hand out focus and a pair of fully fuelled grenadiers every turn can really chuck out a lot of hurt. Thunderhead, Thorn and Rowdy were quite fun but I could certainly see plenty of other battlegroups working better. Sturgis is a lot of fun and I think more people should give him a chance, particularly in Sons. Maddox has also been quite entertaining, the feat can nicely counter the problem of damage output and snipe on stormsmith grenadiers makes them quite good. Tactical supremacy achieves a similar result but it's much more terrain dependent. They can deal a lot of damage against the right targets though! Just make sure a firefly is nearby and those AOE's of theirs can quickly crank up the damage.
I still find a lot of things about the game frustrating at the moment, design decisions piss me off and I have few things I'm really happy with but the biggest hurdle I have to deal with is clock and that is something wholly on me.
