I understand that it is often critical to go first; that it can dictate the entire encounter.
My question is with regards to when you must go 2nd. (Most often, because your opponent won the dice-off, and chose to go first.)
Considering Retribution is such an Ambushy/Assassiny/Skirmishing-flavored Army, I'm often attracted to the idea of NOT running my guys up as 2nd Player, Turn 1. My former mentor stressed to me that it was paramount to RUN the first turn, and only worry about placement and Threat ranges of my opponent...but I often notice that said-opponents have the same mentality: they run their guys up and sometimes into shooting range.
Is it universally-true that I should always run my guys up, Turn 1, as a 2nd Player, regardless, or is okay that I feel like walking and shooting my turn 1? (Given, I use common-sense and run guys that won't shoot. I still pay attention to the mountain of rules/threat-ranges/movements/tricks.) I feel like when I do this, I get an extra round of early-damage on Player 1, and kind of slap him/her in the nose for walking into my front yard. Then again, am I falling for a baiting trick? I know they exist, (such as Vengeance) but I don't shoot those guys. (lol)
Overall...am I shooting myself in the foot, (no pun intended) or are my instincts in the right direction?

You need to use your judgement. No, you shouldn't always be running every single model as far forward as you can. The point of running forward is to make sure you have scenario presence, especially going first. If you're going second, you can punish overeager players with your guns.
And don't forget scoring only starts on the second player's second turn, so the first player has to offer some of his models as sacrifices or fall behind on scenario.

Thank you. I thought I was doing right, but I just wanted to be sure.
