Hey Folks, I have been coming back into Warmachine this year and been focusing on Gorten. I've been playing variations on this list: War Room Army Mercenary - Gorten IR Theme: The Irregulars 4 / 4 Free Cards 75 / 75 Army Gorten Grundback - WJ: +31 - Ghordson Earthbreaker - PC: 38 (Battlegroup Points Used: 31) - Grundback Blaster - PC: 6 - Grundback Blaster - PC: 6 - Grundback Gunner - PC: 6 - Grundback Gunner - PC: 6 - Grundback Gunner - PC: 6 Doc Killingsworth - PC: 0 Lord Rockbottom - PC: 0 Thor Steinhammer - PC: 0 Eiryss, Mage Hunter of Ios - PC: 0 Rhupert Carvolo, Piper of Ord - PC: 4 Sea Dog Pirates - Leader & 9 Grunts: 13 - Mr. Walls, the Quartermaster - PC: 4 Lady Aiyana & Master Holt - Lady Aiyana & Master Holt: 8 Thorn Gun Mages - Leader & 2 Grunts: 9 It's been very fun and a challenge to practice activation orders and such. Clumping up the enemy and then destroying the clumps with EB is too much fun. I just don't feel like I'm getting enough out of the pirate boat, and I've tried making the boat bigger with Bosun, Meg+Mangler, and Branigan. However, they are the only decent def/spd infantry I own. I own the following: Mag1, Ash1, Durgen, Gorten, Ossrum, Bart, Shea, Fiona Mangler, Mule, Talon, 2x Renegades EB, Avalanger, Wrockram, 2x Blasters, 3x Gunners Max Hammerfall Dwarves Max Horgenhold Dwarves Max Sea Dogs w/ UA Thorn Gun Mages Max Steelhead Cav A&H Gastonne1, All the pirate solos save Hawk, Thor, Eiryss1, Gorman, Rhupert, Judge Reinholdt, Sarge Nic Still a small collection I know, but it's growing. I have my eye on steelheads or a lesser warlock as my next buy. I was hoping for some input on a good replacement for the pirate boat. Not just in the infantry, but also in the solos. I feel like a moba team that picked too many supports. I'm welcome to any tweeks. And, shoe, when you troll this post, also include something helpful

The reason most play dwarves in Irregulars instead of Hammer Strike is to have access to the non-Rhulic support. A&H, Eiryss, Gorman, Ragman, all the solos that cover holes in a Rhulic Force. I'd swap the Sea Dogs for Forgeguard, Invest in a Siege Crawler, and drop the pirate solos for A&H at the very least.
The pirates are just in a weird place right now. Thankfully, they have a CID session coming soon.

In terms of AD infantry, Idrians are superb, Solid Ground can provide them with Blast Immunity on non-minifeat turn. Tough, no-knockdown and dug-in is also a good combo. another good choice for Gorten would be Eliminators, stealth and blast immunity synergise quite nicely.

i winned a local three weeks back running ossrum and gorten with gorten being the main list due to the vagaries of my local meta
anyhoo
Gorten EB 5 Gunners 1 Blaster 1 Basher 2x Eliminators Aiyana and Holt Lynus and Edrea Anastasia Eiryss1 Gorman Thor
Logic behind the list:
Gorten runs high DEF, stealth and tough infantry well due to solid ground and rock wall. This encompasses pirates, Boomhowlers, Kayazy Assassins and Nyss. These are all lousy at this time so forget that.
Earthbreaker is a garbage colossal but many many armies can't get to it with a rock wall in front of it, difficult terrain torpedoes help the scenario/control game and SOG makes it all the ARM cracking you need. Since Gorten has no threat extension for Drillers and no focus to hand out to multiple jacks, the EB is the default pick. Thor is needed with EB and 5 focus. Aiyana is needed to make the guns decent as POW 13 stinks. She also helps the Gunners out.
5 Gunners, 1 Blaster and a Basher run themselves and need no help from Gorten which is good because he has none to give. I am also absolved from needing to bother with Solid Ground for the most part so I can run with SOG or no upkeeps. The Basher can go where it pleases out of Gorten's control area due to free slams and flak field.
EB can hold down 1-2 zones/flags. Gunners can go elsewhere within the 10" bubble. Anastasia is to get first turn to build feat advantage and to ambush to contest the distant flag or zone since the rest of the army bunches up. She buys a turn. So do the Eliminators.
Lynus and Edrea are there because of Kolgrima and Gravediggers which we have a lot of. They could easily be Kell or Orin. Gorman and Eiryss1 are control pieces but could also be Kell and Orin.
Don't play it into gun lines. That's for Ossrum.

What makes an earthbreaker better then 3 drillers and a basher? Or 2 drillers and 3 gunners?
Just to play devils advocate. I just don't see why earthbreaker over better range options.
Gorten can run the gunners fine, does he have the juice to even fuel the earthbreaker?

Gorten can run the gunners fine, does he have the juice to even fuel the earthbreaker? Clearing out swaths of infantry with a blatant disregard to whether they have tough or not? Last game I did the sideways feat to clump up farrow brigands and took seven off in one torpedo. I then had 7 more shots at other stuff. I feel like Gorten fuels it just fine. But I'm no expert.

With Gorten it's better because its base size expands his control area, its torpedos augment his scenario game, its innate strength allows it to destroy high armor trivially, and it is easy to protect with a rock wall which is key.

I've never understood how one 3" wall can protect a 5" base. Would you like to explain?

I've never understood how one 3" wall can protect a 5" base. Would you like to explain? Wall templates are 4". The main thing is that you can't land on the wall template. If the colossal is close enough to the wall that there's no landing spot but they can't get reach from the other side it can be crushing (particularly against other colossals).

In addition to that, it limits the number of heavies or infantry that can get into land attacks on it.

I have a completely different way to playing Gorten, and some of you will cringe. I play him as the assassination/scenario/armor cracking caster in my pairing. I also don't run any gun bunnies (*gasp*, I know!). Maybe I'm hamstringing myself, but I have played the list enough times to know what my limitations are and how to trade up with it. Here's the list for reference:
Gorten -Basher -Basher -Driller -Driller -Driller -Rockram -Rockram Eiryss (free) Gorman (free) Lanyssa (free) Ragman (free) Gobber Tinker Idrians (full) -CA Aiyana and Holt
In the event that there is something exceptionally tough (high armor), I can give myself an 8-10 bonus on my melee attacks with my jacks/Gorten, +4-6 on my troops. Alternatively, I can spread the damage buffs around to hit multiple targets. I have a game planned against a troll player tonight and I'm thinking of using this list into him, but swapping Gorman for Alten Ashley.

It´s a nice list, though I´d take Hutchuk over Gorman any day of the week.

It´s a nice list, though I´d take Hutchuk over Gorman any day of the week. Gorman is in my comfort zone and he brings other interesting options, like a cloud to hide behind.
