I used Molotow Liquid Chrome markers. My markers arrived and I've been experimenting with them. From what I can tell the finish from just the markers is not very robust; it seems to get cloudy just from rubbing my finger over the surface. I tried some different varnishes, and the one that affects the finish the least is brush-on GW gloss varnish, but even that DOES have an effect on the finish. Tesoe, I was wondering if you applied any sort of varnish, and if not whether you've had any issues with the finish not holding up to handling? I left it bare. I haven't had an opportunity to use her. So she's just been sitting around on my desk. I haven't had any trouble from when I've handled her, but that hasn't been very much.

I'd appreciate it if you could update us at some point in the future once the durability has been put to the test. I think I'm going to go for the gloss varnish myself; it won't have the same mirror finish but it still looks very bright and shiny.

I'm going to look into getting a bottle of this stuff. youtu.be/rRSD3h0PooU

I had just finished painting my T800s with the chrome pens and I was planning on applying a regular paint-on gloss in the next couple of days (even though in my tests it dulled the finished somewhat). So now I can hold off and look into this alclad. On their site they have a whole bunch of finishes. I guess it's time I went ahead and bought that airbrush that I've been putting off...

I ordered a bottle of their Aqua gloss off Amazon. It's water based so I'm hoping it'll be the least reactive. Once it arrives in a week or so I'm going to run a test on a spoon. I'll try just brushing it on the start.

So what I did was I painted the chrome onto some spare bases, then after they dried for a few days I tested different varnishes on them. Maybe try on a fresh model that you can strip later, or some spare plastic or bases? Oh, unless you mean a plastic spoon. Yeah, that would make sense. Brain running a bit slow right now...

Yeah, I use plastic spoons for simple tests like this. I use green army men for testing slightly more complex things, like a wash.

Soul Samurai, the Alclad arrived and I'm going to start testing. Hopefully I'll be able to post results later today.

I've been looking at airbrushes but I can't decide whether to spend a bit more for a nice one or just buy the cheapest one I can get for now since my plan right now is to use it for just this one thing. Thing is, once I get the hang of it I might start using it for more stuff, right?

I would look into one of the ones that uses a can of compressed air, instead of a compressor. Since a compressor adds a lot to the price of an airbrush. Unless you already happen to have one. So I got distracted and was only able to get one coat of the alclad on the spoon. I'm going to bed soon, but put on a second coat to let sit over night. Really promising results so far though. There basically no difference after the first coat. I wouldn't have known it was there if I hadn't painted it on myself.

Since a compressor adds a lot to the price of an airbrush. Unless you already happen to have one. I need to figure out if I can get compressed air locally; that would be convenient. I figure computer shops will probably have them for cleaning keyboards; I need to check if that's the same sort of compressed air (the right pressure or whatever). So I got distracted and was only able to get one coat of the alclad on the spoon. I'm going to bed soon, but put on a second coat to let sit over night. Really promising results so far though. The normal spray canned air used for cleaning keyboards does carry other chemicals in them, and they may interfere with your paint and/or coats. I don't know about ones designed to work as an attachment to another device, though.

I don't know about ones designed to work as an attachment to another device, though. Huh, probably better avoided then. Thanks for the heads-up! I don't really have a good place right now to set up an airbrushing station indoors. I was thinking about doing some airbrushing outside, but the average airbrush isn't particularly well set-up for that. However I stumbled across a type of airbrush used in cosmetics for apply fake tan or tatoos, that seems easy to use in one hand without any trailing wires and stuff: It uses CO 2 cartridges; I have a few lying around and I think I can probably get more locally - plus I have an old refillable "CO 2" cartridge that you fill with a hand pump. I'm sure this will not be a substitute for a good airbrush for proper painting, but I hope it will be good enough for varnishing as I've just ordered one...
