So, as those who saw The Modcast might know, we mods are doing a challenge series! The idea is that each week (or every other week, w\e) we head to the forums to look for a specific list building challenge to play for the next week. These challenges will be suggested by you all! Each week we will (hopefully) each have a new and exciting challenge to go over, and some fun stories to tell! Week one: Compelling; what does it mean? For week one, we will simply be choosing the most compelling idea presented! It could be a specific model, a combination and\or unique synergy, or trying to build a list in an unusual fashion! So, give us your best, and we'll report back next week with our choices!

To elaborate, we are not asking for full, finished lists. Part of the fun of this challenge is the list building aspect, so we're looking for compelling concepts over full lists!

My inner sadist wants Gaston to play S&D double Meat Thresher.
My more reasonable self wants to see some use out of some of the things we don't see a ton of - Ogrun Bokurs, Brun & Lug, Boomhowler, Raluk (there has to be some reasonable way to get some use out of him?)
Another experiment i always enjoy is to play against type - if we build Arkadius to deliver Crippling Grasp, what could we do with infantry with him, or a battle engine? Something like that.
Lastly, I was in love with Azahul's Mk2 Midas 40 Bone Grinder list (and sadly bought a ton of bone grinders as a result). I would love to see some brainstorming on how to get those back on the table.

Mercs is my main faction, and I really only started minions as a result of some goofy trades and such and getting a couple locks thrown in. So My challenge would be... Using only Barnabas, Maelok, and Calaban (since those are my three casters) what would you do as a two list pairing, and who can come up with the most competitive lists (plural) using those three?

I would actually be really keen to see if you can get a new Bone Grinder spam list to work. I have no doubt that it would involve Rorsh and Brine

A gotta go fast with the helga dash list seems like it could be fun and actually work pretty well. Not going to go into why, but gaston can find a way.
I used to do it with cygnar and mercs for fun, just have a list with all spd 7 or higher or as high as you can since I know minions might be a tad slower.
edit: this list also pokes fun at *cough cough* #wherearethefarrowvalkyries?

Hunting Party: Attempt to get the most out of Victor Pendrake and his Students. They may even be racing against or working with the totem hunter.
List must Include: > Victor Pendrake > Lynus & Edrea > Totem Hunter [Optional]
Really Victor is the most compelling part of the challenge to me. Under casters such as Helga or Jaga Jaga he can become Def20 against warbeasts.

Something effective with Jaga Jaga? I love the model, but have been really unable to make her work.

The reason being that between power up and Helios's broadcast power you could easily get the chimeras up to a defense 14. So you have a slew of def 14/15 arm 16 lights who with apparition actually threaten half an inch farther than griffons. That and griffon swarms are so passe. I mean, what looks cooler, a chimera or a griffon I think the answer is obvious. A griffon doesn't have a snake coming out of its butt.

I wasn't doing Ret, it was just to punish the ridiculous thresher triggering. Going way off topic, you take the Griffons because of the shield granting them Arm 18, also Reach, Pathfinder. The list has mega mittens to also make the Griffons Def 14 vs shooting (granted this would make the Chimeras def 16). But....eh...Firetruck it, why not.

Ok, I think I can actually knock a lot of these out pretty easily: Something effective with Jaga Jaga? I love the model, but have been really unable to make her work. Episode 20: #JaguaryEpisode 22: Max Posse Like a Real ManBetween these two episodes, there are over 6 Jaga battle reports. In Episode 22 Rickard took Jaga to an ADR tourney, played 4 games with her, and won 3, IIRC. Hunting Party: Attempt to get the most out of Victor Pendrake and his Students. They may even be racing against or working with the totem hunter. List must Include: > Victor Pendrake > Lynus & Edrea > Totem Hunter [Optional] Hit Lynus and Edrea in minute 66 (?) of Episode 19: A Matter of Maelok. Long story short, if you really need to use them, take Rorsh and Brine. Which is extra fitting, because they worked together in Extraordinary Zoology until Brine ate Lynus's horse. I have posted some nice Helga dojo in the batrep thread. The issue with Helga speed is that Minions don't have speed. Or depth. Or good stats, really. At spd 7+ you get Road Hogs, Efaarit, Totem Hunter, Nyss Hunters. That is a pretty shallow bench. The good news is if this is a basis for a list, is that those are all actually really good choices with Helga. Fast Nyss with Def Ward, Road Hogs with Feralgiests for Gang and a Battle Boar, Efaarit are just solid (if pricey), and I love Totem Hunter for triggering awkward angles on her feat turn. I would actually be really keen to see if you can get a new Bone Grinder spam list to work. I have no doubt that it would involve Rorsh and Brine Challenge accepted, 95% chance of Brine. Bone Grinders are another example of questionable competence in the edition transition, even more so because they actually put thought into that poor unit and missed by such a wide, obvious margin that...like...why. How do you even react to that? Mercs is my main faction, and I really only started minions as a result of some goofy trades and such and getting a couple locks thrown in. So My challenge would be... Using only Barnabas, Maelok, and Calaban (since those are my three casters) what would you do as a two list pairing, and who can come up with the most competitive lists (plural) using those three? Good news! You can literally build a two list pair that is competitive with any combination of those two. Bad news, you have to figure out who gets which role and adjust your lists accordingly. But basically Barnabas/Maelok for anti-infantry, Calaban/Maelok for armor. My inner sadist wants Gaston to play S&D double Meat Thresher. Nope. Dusting off my Ret. My more reasonable self wants to see some use out of some of the things we don't see a ton of - Ogrun Bokurs, Brun & Lug, Boomhowler, Raluk (there has to be some reasonable way to get some use out of him?) Another experiment i always enjoy is to play against type - if we build Arkadius to deliver Crippling Grasp, what could we do with infantry with him, or a battle engine? Something like that. Ogrun Bokurs are perfectly fine, just no one really wants to spend the points on them. Non-free, non-support, combat solos are too expensive in Mk3. Client a Warlord for fun and profit. Slam KD on a stick is pretty handy with Splatter Boars and Razorbacks. Probably good in a Bone Grinder spam list. Brun and Lug IMO go best with Midas or Rask. Battle Lust/Fury/Flank is an extremely potent combo. Additionally you can build Fort Helga where you pop Def Ward on her, make her immune to KD, and shove her down your opponent's throat. Raluk talk can be found in Episode 15: I like my Hungerford like I like my coffee--covered in bees. I ask the lead developer about Raluk. I'll save you the disappointment, there is no grand master interaction we have missed, they put Raluk in because he is neat, and you play him if you have a fetish for wasting points on Trolls. We had actually prepared material for a Raluk-sode, then scrapped it when it became painfully obvious that every build for him was strategically, tactically, and statistically a horrible idea. At his best, Raluk can get a jack to approximately equal an unbuffed War Hog. Except that Minions is built around supporting Warbeasts, and provides dick all for warjacks, meaning that you will manage to pay an extra 4 point premium to get a War Hog. Unless is it not a Mangler, then you get to buy Lanyssa on top of it, so now you are buying War Hogs for 150%. Raluk falls into that category of horribly designed and poorly thought out Mercanary Jack marshals with a gun and repair who serve no purpose but to cost PP money to produce and waste store shelf space until some ruggedly handsome fool is duped into buying them convinced that he will be the one to make them work. The best thing about Colbie as a limited Lock and Load release was that no one cared at all about that model and rules. The perfect limited release, it upsets nobody.

If you truly want to dive into some rally ideas check out muse on minis 306 they dice deep into jack marshals.
Long story short, you need a jack that can get free charges. If it can charge for free you can give it the command crush (I believe) and it gets plus 2 damage and an extra attack. So that simulates a jack with 2 focus.
In faction we have lanyssa or you can take a mangler. Even better if you a spell to buff him.
