Let me go ahead and specify why I like this list so much with him, since I'm not on particularly often to answer.
The list brings stuff he wants as well as extra redundancy as well.
The jacks Manticores- the classic ret beat face jack with a gun. Has good melee potential to deal with heavies. Great threat with assail. As well as a gun and covering fire for usefulness even when not using to peice trade.
Phoenix- seems a little odd and wouldn't have been my first choice either but I put them in there to complete the list for a tourney and haven't looked back. The extra utility with reach, a pow 14 gun, and combustion as well as the ability to arc assail to a jack without having to be within 6-8 inches.
Griffins- 3 griffons can hold down a zone for the large majority of a game or function very well as a front line "unit" and with the ability to kill 4 lighter armoured models on the feat turn with out any help from anyone can be fairly unexpected.
Solos are pretty self explanatory to be honest, don't be afraid of throwing storm rager on the artificer and knocking something in its butt or even right out of the game (pow 19 is bonkers.)
Battle mages are something I include with him generally even out of theme. 2 good attacks, high defense against gunlines, and magic attacks with ok range are all things that help him, as well as adding redundancy.
