Hi all.
First of all, great forum! I think this will grow to be even better than the old PP-forums.
I have been pondering my coming purchases recently. I really like the Legion of Steel Theme and have tried it with both Z1, Strakhov2 and Irusk2. Similar list with all casters: 2 x Pikemen Uhlans Markov Kovniks Conquest (you get the idea).
Now I am looking for a good pair to complement said themelist. My first thought was a shooty list, but I am having trouble finding something good besides spamming Winterguards and rockets. The problem is that I only own 3 rocketeers and I am not keen on buying into another spam.
So I thought thay I would summon the great minds on the forum to help me with some questions. First: Is it less optimal to pair a LoS-list with say, a melee warjacklist like Karchev or Hark? Second: Would the cookie cutter Vlad2 list suffice as a shooty pairing? Third: What would you guys field if you would field a shooty list that isn't all the rocketeers?
Thx in advance.

Right now, I'm running Irusk 2 Legion with Sorscha 1 Winterguard. It has been alright!

First: Is it less optimal to pair a LoS-list with say, a melee warjacklist like Karchev or Hark? There's likely to be a substantial overlap, even though the two lists aren't the same in how they present a focus on melee and ARM. A more balanced, but still melee warjack heavy list, might work. I'm considering Strakhov2 in LoS with Butcher1 in WG Kommand with a couple of maxed out units of WGI and several jacks. I'm actually thinking about Zerkova2 as a shooty caster. Ternion + Eliminators for clouds on the approach then lots of sprays on feat turn, a few shooty jacks with sacrificial lamb for double focus, maybe with Forgeseers too. I have no idea if it will work, but it might. One reason I'm thinking about it is that a list pairing of double theme lists is currently very vulnerable to incorporeal or other models which need magic weapons to be damaged. Also, I like the Khador evil-magic theme and am waiting on the Graylord/Doomreaver theme. Sorcha1 can also work well, using snipers or other shooty models. I've got a pathfinder heavy shooting list with her which uses the Nyss Hunters (anyone remember them?) and I quite like it. Saved to the end because it's trickier... I don't think you've asked the right question. I think the standard Vlad2 list could work, but not because it's shooty. Rather, it's because it is a good all-comers lists, while LoS presents something of an ARM/target saturation skew. I generally think it's a bad idea to have both lists in a pairing as skews, as you're vulnerable to coming up against something that doesn't quite fit either. A solid all-comers list at least gives you a chance, hence my musings about Butcher1 (who I think can be too often underrated). Good discussion of the Vlad2 list as an all-comers list by chickenslayer here. Sorcha1 is usually a nice choice for an all-comers list. Give her a collosal or Behemoth and some shooting, add some melee, and it's a decent list. Also a slightly different take to LoS - using Fog of War and DEF to protect from shooting, rather than ARM.

If no one is playing Ghost Fleet in your meta, then anything goes I think, it someone is playing ghost fleet, you need a match up that can have access to a lot of magic and ideally remove from play too, this is not something that can be done in tier. I've been ok with a B3 list that packs a lot of magic attack and even then it's a tough match up. If people in your meta don't play ghost fleet, be grateful, the magic attack thing is super binary where you can know you'll lose at list selection if you don't have any magic attack and that makes for a very unpleasant play experience.

To be fair Legion doesn't seem to have particularly awful matchup so far, especially with Z1 or Strakhov2 since they help against shooting a lot. Seems like models that are aimed to counter Legion (big units with Anatomic precision like Kayazy or massed snipers) are currently completely scared away from meta or at least very rare.
My idea was to have WG theme/Legion, but then I remembered about Ghost Fleet existing and it became Karchev in Jaws theme/Legion. In the end I think having jackspam list creates a problem for your opponent since he can't safely drop anti infantry tech into you and even if he does Legion still can win.
Our best shooting list is WG theme, even without 9 rockets. Widowmakers are there and free artillery is very good. If you don't go WG theme then the best would be Vlad2 with WGRC and A&H as it can answer all the anti-shooting tech people bring for the price of less damage than WG theme. After that it's probably mixed out of theme Irusk 2, less damage with shooting, but more durable in a firefight and packs a bigger punch in melee.
There's also Z2 if you have 2 Outrider units.

I say go with a Control caster (Sorscha_1), a Shooty Caster (anything with Vlad_1) or a jack brick if you really wanna double down on the melee.
