I've been doing a fair bit of testing with Legion of Dawn, and I'm looking for feedback on the list I've been running. At the moment, I'm trying to slot in Lanyssa, but am finding it difficult due to how damn tight the math is for this theme (Marshalled jacks should seriously count for free points...)
Here's what I've been running. It's 4-0 so far, but feels quite inflexible, and I feel like adding in some more variable threat range will help change it up.
Elara2 -Aspis -Griffon -Sphinx
Dawnguard Scyir (free) - Griffon Dawnguard Scyir (free) - Hydra 3 Arcanists
Sentinels + UA + Soulless Sentinels + UA + Soulless
At the moment, I'm looking to free up 4 points for Lanyssa, but nothing really jumps out as non-essential to the list (except for the BG, which I really can't do anything about.) Options that have occurred to me:
1. drop both soulless and an arcanist. However, this option leaves the sentinels vulnerable to offensive upkeeps, and makes it impossible fully fuel the marshalled griffon
2. Drop a soulless and one unit of sentinels for a unit of destors: gives me a fast unit to trigger flank off of, but they die easily, especially without the thane, and aren't particularly hard hitting.
3. Drop a unit of Sentinels for a Unit of Invictors, drop the soulless
4. Drop the marshalled griffon to an aspis, drop the soulless or an arcanist.
What do you guys think? I'm quite leery about marshalling anything other than a Hydra on the second Scyir, because of the focus demands and because flanking Hydras are bloody terrifying. I also don't really want to drop the marshalled griffon, because a ghostly, boundless charging, flanking griffon can either assassinate or trade up VERY easily.

You arent using up all your battlegroup points. You're 1 point under. You'll need to add\upgrade something to make sure you use them all. If memory serves, its required(unless I am thinking of mk2)

I have been theory crafting a similarly list but with a unit of invictors instead of Sents. I haven't had a chance to test it out the first game is today so we will se how it goes.

If you have an extra point anyway, would a Manticore be better than a Sphinx to get Covering Fire and make it more difficult for your opponent to get to the Sentinels?
Another question, how far ahead would you need to put Lanyssa to effectively increase your threat range? It might help the Sentinels but the marshalled Hydra already threats 15" with vengeance move, making it likely that Lanyssa would have to be so far forward to contribute that she gets taken out somehow.

Relying on the vengeance move isn't great. Skilled opponents know to avoid triggering it, and it often necessitates playing the Hydra behind the front lines anyways. The big issue, though, isn't so much getting the jack there (a fleet, boundless charged griffon threats the world) but getting the flanking DG (which threats 12" running or charging under feat) in there too can be. The other BG I considered was 2 manticores, but I feel like Elara really wants both a shield guard and a channeller, that Manticores are best in pairs or trios (or not at all) and that there's synergy between the sphinx' gun and lanyssa's hunters mark. Definitely an option, though.

Personally, I would just drop the griffon+Scyir package for Lanyssa and add the griffon to the battlegroup.

Personally, I would just drop the griffon+Scyir package for Lanyssa and add the griffon to the battlegroup. I don't hate this, but a marshalled griffon is just such a good assassination missile. On feat turn, if it procs vengeance (and I keep it behind the lines) it threats 16-18", and can hit at PS 19 + Flank, while having ghostly. It's a freaking death missile, and if I felt like I could fuel two of them with just 3 arcanists, I would absolutely run a second griffon over the Hydra. Mine already has two caster kills to it's name.

I've been looking at something like this:
Kaelyssa, The Night's Whisper - WJ: +29 - Banshee - PC: 18 (Battlegroup Points Used: 18) - Banshee - PC: 18 (Battlegroup Points Used: 11)
Dawnguard Sentinel Scyir - PC: 4 - Hydra - PC: 15 Arcanist Mechanik - PC: 2 Arcanist Mechanik - PC: 2 Arcanist Mechanik - PC: 2 Eiryss, Mage Hunter of Ios - PC: 0
Dawnguard Sentinels - Leader & 9 Grunts: 18 - Dawnguard Sentinel Officer & Standard - Officer & Standard: 0 - Soulless Escort - PC: 1 - Soulless Escort - PC: 1 Dawnguard Sentinels - Leader & 9 Grunts: 18 - Dawnguard Sentinel Officer & Standard - Officer & Standard: 4 - Soulless Escort - PC: 1
Would probably toy around with Eiryss1(for stationary/knockdown/disrupt combo with Kae and Banshee) OR Lanyssa(for refuge on hunters mark) as my merc solo. I think blur and banishing ward are nice situational spells for the Hydra/Scyir to keep them safe. I think true sight and dispel on Kae give her some nice tools to remove arcane shield and such when needed and the feat delivers sentinels well. +2" going first with her is huge to project a strong turn 2 feat(then follow up with turn 3 minifeat). Hydra as the flank jack gives you shooting at 15" POW 17 before it gets into charge range and with it's chain attack you could head but to further hit fix (Lanyssa +vengeance also turn it into a 15" threat) and since it holds on to it's focus it is almost 100% chance to be sending it in on 3 focus PS19(with crush) and if you have Lanyssa that's free charge, 2 initials, head but, 1 crush attack, 3 bought attacks... that's gonna 1 round almost anything in the game if you've got flank.
Would most likely be pairing this with either Ossyan in defenders OR Vyros1 in Shadows for one big Alpha strike feat and one control feat in my pairing.

I know this might be non kosher in regards to sentinels but what about dropping 1 of the sentinels UA for lanyssa?
I think where it matters, Elara's feat will cover the relentless charge benefit. The biggest pain point is the mini feat to protect that unit against shooting but I think with the high terrain we see in 2017, you can still manage to mitigate a lot of it via unit positioning?
Definitely would require adjustment during matches but something to consider?
Curious to hear your thoughts though, isotope!

The Sphinx gets to crazy damage, ended up at MAT10 PS21 weaponmaster with Marked for Death, Scything Touch, and Crush. Otherwise the list was fine I suppose, not super impressed with the theme. We were doing Barny stress tests though so it wasn't really a game.

Where was the Sphinx in your list?

Oh, that's the edited certain lol. This is why I need to get better about clearing it my old lists in War Room. Hydra was a Sphinx, extra points were soulless escorts on each unit.

The Hydra seems like the ideal jack to marshall, as it can keep hold of its focus to shake, KD, Stationary, Blind etc. It also has a gun which the Griffon does not so can contribute before it goes ham on something in melee.
