When mk3 started I got into trolls then real life happened and I was away for a while, then i traded off my trolls. I want them back but I want to start with just 2 lists for the time being. My thoughts after some browsing are egrissel and doomy2. I've seen a lot of doomy lists pop up but what about grissel? She was my favorite in mk2 but now I see a lot of people loving or hating her. What type of list should I run to compliment doomy? Any help would be nice I plan on building back my army with the essentials first.

Grissel2 needs the bomber, it's just a requirement. I don't leave home without Janissa as well; the hill really helps when you want to shoot something, which is every turn I hope.

Grissel 2 is one of my absolute favorites. I played her a lot pre PoD, and it was great. The list i used was fairly close to PoD, but not identical. My current (but untested) list with her is in PoD and looks like this: | Trollbloods Army - 75 / 75 points [Theme] The Power of Dhunia
(Grissel 2) Grissel Bloodsong, Marshal of the Kriels [+27][*]Dire Troll Bomber [19] [*]Dire Troll Bomber [19] [*]Mountain King [36] [*]Troll Bouncer [9] [*]Troll Axer [10]
Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes (min) [6][*]Stone Scribe Elder [3]
Troll Whelps [0] Some solo [0] Some solo [0]
|
|
The solos can be customized to what you feel would help you best, but i would guess that it is either doule Shamans for contesting or protecting with clouds, or Janissa and Runebearer to increase DEF against ranged with elevation and more opportunity to cast Deflection. The list was very similar outisde theme, except that the free solos + Axer was min Kriel Warriors and a Gobber Chef (for Fury management) plus a Feralgeist for contesting. That list is tested a lot, and it works great. You easily one round heavies at range, but scenario is not its strong suite. Attrition in to assassination is probably a better path to victory. I played that list in to Karchev + pre-nerf mad dogs, and i killed 9 jacks before he killed a single model. Then the MK went down and things got exciting again, but still The list is very dangerous for assassination. Grissel + one bomber kills most casters between them assuming they can be knocked down. The MK and Bouncer are super hard to kill under feat. The Bouncer can get Wailing and charge something and cast animus. Then you reform forward and you are ARM 23 with no knock down and infantry nearby can not charge. He can lock down a whole unit of sentinels for multiple rounds. VERY strong. Your pairing looks solid. I would make sure to tailor Grissel 2 a bit to handle what ever you do NOT want to play Doomy 2 against. As long as Grissel gets a Bomber, you can build a multitude of lists with her. If you do not go in theme, Mulg can be very strong with Wailing and animus on the feat turn. He can disrupt an entire army. Razorback crews are super good value with her since they do a Boosted POW 14 that actually hits each turn for only 5 points. Lots and lots of possibilities here.

Thanks! Out of curiosity how did we shape up? Last I knew Jay was doing well with ragnor and grim 2 but I haven't seen many with either. Mostly it's Doomy2, Horg2, Calandra, and Gunny that I see. Are the the A tiers for us this time around?

I'd say Doomy2, Horgle2, Gunny, Ragnor, and Grissel2 are talked about a lot because its where the collective mind has focused recently but in my oppinion most of our casters are playable at a reasonably competitive level

One of the best things going for trolls atm is our depth in warlocks, over half the cast is very playable.

I think the troll stable is good. So far i only think Madrak 1, Borka 2 and Grim 1 are "unplayable trash". The rest can all be taken to tournaments with a good build and do well i think. Some of those are probably better than others, but after having gone 7-2 with Jarl in my local meta when trying him out, i think that the strength of the faction comes more from the models (beasts and kriel stone tbh) than from the casters, so any one of them can do. You should play which ever you feel looks/feels cool to begin with.

Thanks! That's why I picked the two I did to come back with. I like how they speed is up, my only other thought was ragnor just because I played him at the start of mk3

I like how they speed us up, my only other thought was Ragnor just because I played him at the start of MK3 Ragnor is also a great option for obvious reasons. I just put Grissel2 in my bag for game night this week, going to try a Warlock swap with my Ragnor list and see how it plays out. I also got around to building a second Bomber and it's giving me ideas with even Ragnor. The Grissel2 List Grissel2 (PoD) - Runebearer (free) - Bomber - Mauler - Axer - Bouncer Janissa (free) Whelps Runeshapers x 3 Krielstone - Elder Dhunian Knot

As far as units go is the generally consensus still grab 2 units of fennblades and don't really worry about warriors?

If you want to play Madrak 2, then get 2 units of Fennblades. No one else will use more than one, and most will not use even that.

If not in theme (Power of Dhunia), then two units of Fire Eaters have been a more 'goto' for me.
No frills unit of KWs for 'getting in the way' for really cheap point costs.

Ok, I just purchased 2 units of fennblades because they were 17 dollars. I couldn't pass that up, even if they sit for a while that's a steal in my book. Has anyone played madrak after the nerf? Is he still solid or is there too much Anti infantry? I would start with 2 fenns and warders and go from there. Either way I'm running egrissel and most likely doomy but I am curious about the state of emadrak since I pulled the trigger on 2 units.

Sorry to hijack your thread, but making another new one for new troll player advice didn't seem necessary.
I really enjoy shooting. I come from Pigs and Road Hogs + a gun unit and support are great for assassinating casters. Trolls seem like they could do it much better with Grim2, Gunny, and Grissel2. I picked some trolls in a trade and really looking to build 1 list before committing to 2 list pairings and beyond.
Below is a collection of what I have: Ragnor Grim2 Borka1 Bomber X2 Mauler Bouncer X2 Acer Impaler Krielstone + UA Fennblades Burrowers Fire Eaters
I'm built a few lists that I'm considering to build into to learn.
Hunters Grim - WB: +25 - Muggs & Krump - Trollkin Runebearer - PC: 4 - Dire Troll Mauler - PC: 15 (Battlegroup Points Used: 15) - Troll Bouncer - PC: 9 (Battlegroup Points Used: 9) - Dire Troll Bomber - PC: 19 (Battlegroup Points Used: 1) - Dire Troll Bomber - PC: 19
Swamp Gobber Chef - PC: 1
Northkin Fire Eaters - Leader, Trollkin Grunt, and Pyg Grunt: 7 Northkin Fire Eaters - Leader, Trollkin Grunt, and Pyg Grunt: 7 Pyg Burrowers - Leader & 9 Grunts: 13 Dhunian Knot - Leader & 2 Grunts: 6
This list doesn't have the stone, which as an outsider seems wrong, but I don't know where to make up the points. I've tried making other Grim2 lists including the stone, but I either have to drop the Runebearer and Dhunian Knot, or the bouncer, or something else.
Then there is this Gunnbjorn list that seems fun.
Captain Gunnbjorn - WB: +28 - Dire Troll Bomber - PC: 19 (Battlegroup Points Used: 19) - Dire Troll Bomber - PC: 19 (Battlegroup Points Used: 9) - Dire Troll Mauler - PC: 15 - Dozer & Smigg - PC: 18
Feralgeist - PC: 2
Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes - Leader & 3 Grunts: 6 - Stone Scribe Elder - PC: 3 Dhunian Knot - Leader & 2 Grunts: 6 Trollkin Highwaymen - Leader & 9 Grunts: 15
You can fudge the points around to drop a bomber and something else to get a war wagon and a bouncer, just for variety.
Lastly, there is the Grissel2 assassination list which is probably the most similar to what I play now.
Grissel Bloodsong, Marshal of the Kriels - WB: +27 - Dire Troll Bomber - PC: 19 (Battlegroup Points Used: 19) - Dire Troll Bomber - PC: 19 (Battlegroup Points Used: 8) - Dire Troll Mauler - PC: 15 - Troll Bouncer - PC: 9
Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes - Leader & 3 Grunts: 6 - Stone Scribe Elder - PC: 3 Pyg Burrowers - Leader & 9 Grunts: 13 Trollkin Warders - Leader & 4 Grunts: 17
Again, this could be change to have a MK, but I'm not really ready to drop that much cash on a model even though he gets tons of play.
It's hard to ask because it feels so much like preference, but where should I start, with keeping the army cheap (dollar wise), having model variety, and somewhat competitive?
