I'd say Khador takes the prize for best internal balance in the game. Almost every caster is tournament-playable, and just kossites and Man-O-Wars need help. That's a damned sight better than any other faction in the game. -und_ed Kossites, Man-o-Wars, about 1/3-1/2 of their jacks (depending on who you talk to), WGI, a few others. I won't deny that they have good internal balance (good enough that I'm a bit steamed that they're coming up for CID when some factions have 1/2 of their stuff in need of fixes) but I think Ret comes out ahead. They've got 1 crap caster (honestly more of a confused caster than actually being crap) 2 units (Destors, Rifles) which need a bump, 2 Solos (Destor Thane, Nayl) and 2 Warjacks (Daemon, Gorgon) - everything else is very playable. And even the crap isn't that bad.

What's wrong with rifles? If I had to take a guess, is it that Invictors do most of their job+melee?
But other than that, I have to agree, that Ret is in a better place than Khador, they just have/had more meta-bending pieces in Mk3 so they're more visible on the positive side.

Cryx is in a lot better place after the Banes/Thralls CID, it finally makes all those mechanithralls I have in the shed worth it again. 30 mcthralls and a sepulcher is go.

I'm going to have to disagree with you re:Ret, they're one of, if not THE best internally balanced faction in the bloody game. They've got maybe 6-7 nonviable options, but everything else has at least niche application (competitively.) Their lists are looking static right now because ghost fleet is such a bogeyman, and they only have 2 answers to it which they have to play (or lose) which also have pretty well-defined weaknesses (and thus, there's a clear 'best' pairing.) if and when the meta shifts, I think we could easily see more of Rahn, Ossyan, Kaelyssa, Helynna, Vyros1, and Elara2. Kaelyssa really Firetrucks Denny if the latter isn't careful. I played a few times against a build with Hyperion and 3 Hydras and that is really cagey to play against. When you can die at any given moment from across the table that really forces Denny to play back until there is a clear opening or the threat is eliminated. The list has enough magical attacks and volume of attacks in general to deal with the pirates (and the range to take out the one in the back) and the feat is essentially a time walk.
