I was thinking about this more last night. Mk III, support bloat in most of my lists have gone way, way down. In Mk II, It was pretty common to have the stone, chronicler, Fell caller and Runebearer in most of my lists. Now it’s usually two support choices tops. Stone and Runebearer in PoD. Stone & Fell Caller/s (if free) in BoH.
With our troop options being what they are, would it make sense for PP to reduce the cost of the support? Chronicler seems like he could go down to 3pts, to be same as the Agitatior. The Fell Caller & Champ hero seem like the could be 4pts. They’d be pretty good for the cost, but would it break the faction. Certainly not.

I play the chronicler more often than the fell caller, both before and after theme lists came out. This probably has to do with most of my units having pathfinder via mini feat or relentless charge, though.
I'd love if the support were cheaper, and for us to have more low cost options, but, aside from the champ hero, I think they are pretty reasonable. That guy took a huge hit in the transition and I'm not sure I've played him since. If he could have his old rules and reach back, he might be under-cost, though. As he is, he is well under the cost-value curve as I see it.

Troll support costs 1 more point than you think it should because they are actually good at fighting. Both the chronicler and fell caller can do their buffs AND fight in the same turn, and they are pretty decent at fighting. This is annoying if you do not get any work out of your support, but if you get the hang of it, both models should kill 1-2 models per game and thus become "cheaper". Even the kriel stone can help out late game. MAT 5 POW 10-11 is not good, but it is way better than the choir, and they can use the aura and fight in the same turn. It is imperative that you get a little bit of work out of your support as a troll player i think.

What if Charge of the Trolls instead gave gang to target faction unit? Most of our beasts have short melee ranges making it really hard to trigger. A heavy will tend to kill whatever he hits, and so this would probably help light trolls, but most lights have .5" melee and thus it's very hard to get more than 2 medium bases to attack 1 target.
However I believe that would make the fell caller near useless, unless you change his +2 to melee attack rolls to all attack rolls. So we can use the fell caller for range units, and the stone scribe chronicler for melee units.
On a more broken note Hero's Tragedy would be more useful if it was all enemy models instead of enemy warrior models.

I'm not arguing our support isn't good, or that it can't contribute to the fight. I'm just thinking if our units are mostly lack luster, why can't we have stellar support?

I think we could, but TBH I would rather that PP look at our units and buff them up to be more impressive on their own. I worry about adding more "must include" supports to Trolls given the stone and other "autopicks" we already have.

Again, 100% agree . I was just trying to look at this issue just with the Chronicler, and other solos in mind. My wish list for Troll adjustments in order of importance is: 1. Re-evaluate Units 2. Widen the stable of heavies. I think we have some good heavies, I just wish we had more non-character options (yes, I am aware that this has been an age old gripe). 3. Re-evaluate lights.
