Hi i'm thinking of starting up warmachine after getting sick of 40k. I have the battlebox so far. I wanna start out with Helynna (in Forges of War) and have mocked up a 75 pt list for starters:
War Room Army
Retribution of Scyrah - 75 pts forges
Theme: Forges of War 4 / 4 Free Cards 74 / 75 Army
Magister Helynna - WJ: +30 - Sylys Wyshnalyrr, The Seeker - PC: 0 - Chimera - PC: 8 (Battlegroup Points Used: 8) - Manticore - PC: 14 (Battlegroup Points Used: 14) - Manticore - PC: 14 (Battlegroup Points Used: 8) - Griffon - PC: 8 - Griffon - PC: 8 - Phoenix - PC: 18
House Shyeel Artificer - PC: 0 - Hydra - PC: 15 House Shyeel Artificer - PC: 0 - Hydra - PC: 15 Arcanist Mechanik - PC: 0 Arcanist Mechanik - PC: 2 Arcanist Mechanik - PC: 2
THEME: Forges of War ---
I also wanna pick up some stuff to play her outside of theme and have mocked up a list of the stuff i'm thinking of picking up to begin with (if i'm able to ship of my Necrons)
Army Box 2 arcanists 4 shyeel heavies+disco kit (2 hydra, another manticore and disco)
Lanyssa (maybe) Sylys 2 Artificiers Gorgon (to replace chimeara to fill out all the points?) Soulless escort
This is to start, and then i'm probably going to pick up another caster to try out after this.
Any tips, criticisms and advice would be appreciated^^

To fill out the points you could drop the Phoenix ( not that great of a jack) pick up a Discordia) and a Lyss Healer. I don't have anything bad to say about the list except that as a new player taking on a low model count list you're going to get swarmed by dude spam lists. Also just a warning. Having jack marshaled Warjacks with Helynna is kinda of a bummer because they won't benefit from her spell list. HoD and RoW are both Battlegroup only. Other than that I'd say the list looks decent.

Yeah with Helynna its not that great an Idea to Marshall, She is an awesome battle group caster because of her BG support spells in Rhythm and Hand and you lose out on those if you Marshall. Rhythm is a deceptively powerful spell. A 3 inch repo at the end of the turn may not seem like much but this is a game that victory or defeat can often come down to 1/8th of and inch so its huge. It lets you take bait trades that you opponent wants to feed you to open up assassination vectors and then Rhythm will let you close the door, which means you get to have your cake and eat it. Hand is again an amazing spell that skews the odds in some interesting ways and in my experience causes probability to warp into shapes no one saw coming, the effects of rolling 3D6 and dropping the low cause some weird stuff to happen to a game designed on the 2d6 curve, and it gets even more interesting when you boost and turn it into 4D6 dropping low.
I will say keep the phoenix its stock is kinda low right now but I think its going to go up here in a bit, Themes are starting to bring dude spam back and the 2017 SR looks like its gonna reinforce that with zones only infantry can score and contest. I think that will lead to more appreciation of the phoenix's infantry clearing power.
Also while its a bit of a pain I will say you want to magnatise your heavy jack kits, the amount of money and space it will save you is amazing.

Yeah disco and healer are not in theme. But i get sentinels in the army box to be able to run out of theme as well. And putting the Hydra's in the BG doesn't mess up the list otherwise. The magnetizing bit is probably a great idea, but not a project i think i'm going to be able to handle in the foreseeable future

I wouldn't worry too hard about playing her out of theme, she is very very solid with Disco and Sentinels.

I feel like Helynna is one of our casters that works really well outside of theme especially with her fondness for Discordia and Sentinels. I will say thought that I am confused on how trading the Pheonix for Disco would allow you to pick up a Lys Healer and fill out the points as Disco and Pheonix are the same cost. As for your To Buy list it seems like a really solid start, my one hesitation is that artificers dont see much play out of theme but Forges of War is fairly common.

First, I can say I tested Helynna with Forges of war and it is a great way to build her. For a beginner, I think I wouldn't recommend buying 4 Shyeel Heavy Kits right of the start, and I never saw a Gorgon get played, so I would scratch that off the list. You don't want to replace the Chimera at all with her, she really likes the cheap Arcnode.
If you really want to play Forges right of the start, the List looks solid, although I would consider putting the Hydras in the battlegroup.

Yeah I agree the Gorgon is not that good, we have better guns, and Griffons are great blocks. Helynna really really likes a Chimera to arc a Hand on to a key target or 2 in most games with out exposing herself too much.

Ill take a moment to stand up for the Gorgon as personally I feel like they are solid pieces. Their gun is really powerful and can do a lot of work. I personally would rather run the Chimera than a Gorgon in that particular list but there are a lot of ways to make Gorgons really shine namely our journeyman caster Elara1. They are by no means wasted models. Personally I feel like the lack of play of Gorgons is still just a hold over from the bad spot they were in back in MK2 but now their gun has more punch, power up works wonders as they only really need one maybe 2 focus max, and with the changes to Elara she lets them really shine.
