Ok, so I have a buddy who is moving away. He's an avid WM player and wanted to get into the tournament scene when Covid hit. I enjoy WM but on a much more casual level. We haven't played in a few months due to playing DnD and actually a little Infinity, but I figured as a going away "present," I'd play him one last 75 point game.
Because of the disparity of our skill levels (also the intensity of our interest), He has shared exactly what he's bringing:
Retribution of Scyrah - Garry75 Theme: Defenders of Ios 75 / 75 Army 0 / 20 Specialist Garryth, Eye of Vengeance - WJ: +29 - Sylys Wyshnalyrr, The Seeker - PC: 0 - Banshee - PC: 18 (Battlegroup Points Used: 18) - Moros - PC: 11 (Battlegroup Points Used: 11) Dawnguard Trident - PC: 16 Dawnguard Trident - PC: 16 Arcantrik Force Generator - PC: 17 Void Archon - PC: 8 Ghost Sniper - PC: 0 Ghost Sniper - PC: 0 Scythe - PC: 0 House Vyre Electromancers - Leader & 2 Grunts: 7 House Vyre Electromancers - Leader & 2 Grunts: 7 Heavy Rifle Team - Leader & Grunt: 4 THEME: Defenders of Ios
---------------
I play Armored Korp and, in theory, Winterguard.
I don't expect to win, but I don't want it to devolve into a simple bloodbath where he rolls dice and I pull models off the board. Unfortunately, my only strategy at the moment is to take Kozlov in Armored Korp, load up on Shocktroopers with max Tankers (and a Victor), move up turn 1, pop feat for extra ARM and SPD to move as far forward as possible turn 2, hope for good scatters on Victor's main gun, face tank whatever he has to throw at me and hopefully engage him with whatever is left of my army on the next turn.
To my understanding, that still equals bloodbath.
I have/am familiar with Butcher 1/3, Vlad 1/2, Irusk 1/2, and Kozlov.
Any thoughts as to how I can survive long enough to make this match interesting would be greatly appreciated. As I mentioned, I'm a fairly casual player, but when I play, I still like to play the best game I can. I feel like this one might be to set a goal for myself that isn't necessarily winning so that if I can at least achieve that goal, I can declare a private moral victory :-)

That really is quite a lot of guns. I’m not sure Armored Corps — at least with any of the casters you mentioned — can handle that.

The guys on the warmachine discord were very supportive and helpful, but I think that was the concensus there, too. It’s too late for tonight’s game, but what might Khador have (all options open) that COULD handle such a list? And is a Garryth list like this something that people prepare for at tournaments?

So if anyone would care to know, I ended up face tanking like a champ, but I overloaded one side to put pressure on garryth and he was able to win on scenario. But I didn’t get shot up quite like I thought I would. So moral victory :-)

So, instead of creating another thread, let me just post this here:
Why is this forum so dead? Why are all the WM forums so dead?
Are Internet forums just passé now? I also play Infinity and those forums are bleak, as well…. What gives? I pretty much refuse to believe that these game’s are dead in the water…

I don't really understand why, but it seems most people use discord and/or facebook these days.

I also play Infinity and those forums are bleak, as well…. What gives? I pretty much refuse to believe that these game’s are dead in the water… From a minis company point of view, it’s easier and cheaper to have Facebook/et al. shoulder the infrastructure burden these days than it is to manage your own forums. That, and the yutes* seem to all prefer the short-attention-span blipvert world of social media, where something that happened more than 6 hours ago might as well never have existed at all. Lormahordes was never all that big compared to even the old PP forums. If I had to guess, just make up some numbers, I’d say that at best Lormahordes captured 7.5-10% of the PP forum audience, another 40-50% went to Facebook, and the remainder simply evaporated into the ether. (Source: just guessing, based on what I observed locally.) Further, the Lormahordes audience has visibly contracted in the past few years. For my part, I’ve frequently had essentially zero tolerance on the jackholes who hang out just to complain about how awful the game is at every opportunity**, and I can only hope I have contributed in some small way to them self-selecting themselves out of participation here and elsewhere. Toxic people need to go, before they poison the rest of the well. (True fact: had about 10 people been perma-banned on the old PP forums, the level of complaints and general toxicity would have gone down by about 80%. Source: I got sick of that crowd of jerks after the MK III drop, and blocked them all. I noticed after a short while that the forums were a much nicer place!) (Just watch sometime. Watch a thread die after somebody expresses a like for something, and some jagoff flies in and poops on everything. Surprise! People don’t like having their enthusiasm for their hobby crushed by loudmouth know-it-alls!) So…um…yeah? I guess? The people still posting here are more or less level-headed humans who are pleasant to interact with. (*Anyone? Anybody?)
** “This release is trash! This release is OP! Everybody is OP except for my faction, which REALLY NEEDS some OP releases to make it fair! Oh and your list sucks and you should take my advice and totally rewrite it. I mean sure by my own admission I haven’t played a game in 5 years, weirdly the local scene died after I demanded ‘All Steamroller or GTFO’ from everybody I saw, and you can look at my post history and see that fully 50% of everything I say is some passive-aggressive complaint about how PP charges too much to ship to me in Outer Australiastanfjordia, even though weirdly this cut-rate Kickstarter I backed blah blah blah blah blah….”

I think it is mostly just independent forums for things are a dying thing in general.
Facebook for Gen X/Millennials and Discord seems the go to for *everything* for the Zoomers.
I think forums are still the best method to actually talk about things in any sort of constructive fashion, as you can have a specific contained topic with all the responses to it, but such is life.

I mean, I like them and I frequent a bunch, but it's strictly a discussion platform, not much of a promotion platform.

For my part, I’ve frequently had essentially zero tolerance on the jackholes who hang out just to complain about how awful the game is at every opportunity** Yeah, like that guy who's name I can't remember right now who simply can't let the Berserker be mentioned without at least a three-paragraph rant about how bad it is. And Heaven help you if you mention Butcher 2 around him...

And Heaven help you if you mention Butcher 2 around him... I have had my moments, certainly. Most people do. You’ll note that I haven’t had a Berserker rant in quite a while. I got it out of my system. There’s a difference between my sporadic bad-mood rantings and the people I mention, though: I actually actively play the game. I have spent and continue to spend a significant amount of my time trying to nurture my local community and keep the game healthy. I don’t hang out here and visit random threads with lamentations about how Warmachine costs too much, and why can’t it be cheaper because the last CMON Kickstarter sold me X at cheaper than retail price, and say it’s PP’s fault that my local scene died because clearly the local players have no responsibility for that, and so on, and so forth. (In fact, I had a suspicion you were going to bring up my late 2018-2019 Berserker/Butcher2 rants, and I actually intended to head that off. I got distracted working on more terrain stuff and painting models, though. )

It just feels weird to see one of the saltier people on this forum getting salty about other people getting salty. Like you say, most people have their moments. I started a blog just to rant about movies. I just feel like you especially might show a bit of empathy for people expressing their frustration for something they are very invested in, since you clearly know it's something you've indulged in yourself. And sure, a lot of people took it much farther than you, almost certainly too far, but you can still understand where it came from, right? Speaking of blogs and movies (that is what we were talking about right?), I just watched Army Of The Dead and I'm wondering if it's worthing knocking out a quick rant review. I don't know that I have too much to say really, but I'm still a little tempted.
