I don't think B2 is a suitable vs newbie caster anyway. ...I mean, just because it's trash doesn't say much if your opponent can't tell what it does because it's random all the time.

No it's more that it doesn't give a game to plan against.
B2 is like the YOLO-iest of YOLO casters.
Had success -as in, good games- just using Kozlov or Butcher. Taking a bunch of mercs is, well, very mk2-ish, what does your opponent play?

I'm not sure how the fact that I might not have enough focus in my turn to do what my army would otherwise be capable of somehow ruins his plans? It's not like he understands the game well enough to be planning two turns ahead.
My opponent picked up some second-hand Protectorate and has played like two games with them, but doesn't seem very happy with them. I wrote a Vlad1 list for him to try in our next game to see if he likes Khador more. I suspect his problem is he thinks of armies in 40K terms and that doesn't translate to WMH so well; he was looking for "the faction that playes like Custodes: super-elite but low model count".
Thing is, 8th ed Custodes infantry were tough, accurate, had both volume of fire weapons and high power weapons, and could even be pretty fast. Basically really high stats all-round, just very expensive. Which is not really how WMH works, but maybe a Vlad1 list can get a little bit close?

Sounds like he might like Tharn; they aren't the toughest but they're no pushover, and they're certainly fast, accurate and hard-hitting. Especially with someone like Iona

Vlad2 Armored Corps.
Pick a turn and live the life.
In protectorate/Khador: Warriors of the Old Faith can play the "small elite force" quite well under Vlad3 or Kreoss3, but especially the former. A pair of Drakhuns tag-teaming with Champions and Menite Archons is a blast to play, even if it's not super meta.

Khador is a very 'you only life once faction' overall.
But if you're gonna live the life with vlad2 you need uhlans, uhlans for sure. You'd have to go theme less though.
You can do some pretty cool stuff in 40k. I wanna do a wraith eldar army sometime. Maybe a project for next year... if I finish all my current models. Maybe next next year.
I dunno what'd pass for a small elite force in waramahordes. Tharn probably comes pretty close. Or jack/beast spam. The arkadius seven warbeast army maybe. Troll champions with castellan maybe. In Khador that Old Faith stuff sounds like it could be fun.
Anyway the game is to complicated that no matter what you do it'll be a lot for any newbie to take in and they'll have to sit down and just grind trough it. I think the whole 'keep things consistent' idea is the way to go.

Quick question: can I put both Ravager and Boundless Charge on the same model at the same time? I feel like the answer used to be no, but I'm so rusty I can't remember if that was Mk2 or something.

Yeah, you can. Pg73; "Although it is not possible to have more than one friendly upkeep spell and one enemy upkeep spell on a model or unit at a time, it is possible for a model or unit to be affected by more than one spell or animus at a time. Regardless of how many upkeep spells are affecting a model or unit, it can be affected by any number of non-upkeep spells and up to one friendly animus at the same time"

So the game went really well! Not only did I roll a 1 for Butcher's focus EVERY turn, he spent half the time Silenced by Crowe anyway. Then he got punched by a Juggernaut and died without using his feat. It was a lot of fun!
My friend enjoyed Vlad1, saying he understood him better than the other casters he tried. I told him a little about Vlad2 and 3; he was interested in Vlad2's feat (although not happy to hear about the trade of S&P for HoF), so maybe we'll try that some time.
I'll try to write up a full battle report later.

Vlad2 with S&P would be absolutely disgusting.

I think he really appreciated the simplicity of S&P; no need to think about which unit to cast it on etc.
One thing I noticed that I haven't really thought about before was that the ability icons - like Weaponmaster - were more complicated for him because he was expecting special rules to be on the back of the card. Even I was feeling unsure about which icons meant what after not playing for so long.
