I've played quite a few games with Jaga Jaga now and have written a couple of my more recent games up on my local Facebook group and figured I might as well cross pollinate them.
Played a game against Andy on Monday:
We both just wanted to drop specific lists so we just checked that it wasn't a hard counter for either of us and then went ahead. I was playing Jaga Jaga
Jaga-Jaga, the Death Charmer - WB: +27 - Gatorman Soul Slave - PC: 0 - Swamp Horror - PC: 15 (Battlegroup Points Used: 15) - Swamp Horror - PC: 15 (Battlegroup Points Used: 12) - Swamp Horror - PC: 15 Underchief Mire - PC: 4 - Blackhide Wrastler - PC: 16 Feralgeist - PC: 0 Feralgeist - PC: 0 Feralgeist - PC: 0 Void Archon - PC: 8 Void Archon - PC: 8 Lanyssa Ryssyl, Nyss Sorceress - PC: 4 Swamp Gobber River Raider - PC: 1 Dhunian Archon - PC: 0 Farrow Valkyries - Leader & 2 Grunts: 8 Farrow Valkyries - Leader & 2 Grunts: 8 THEME: Will Work For Food
And Andy was playing Cyrenia with the Shrine in Guardians of the Temple.
The scenario was Bunkers with a scattering of forests and obstructions across the board.
I won the roll off and as the terrain felt reasonable even for me on either side chose to go first. Andy chose the side with slightly less terrain to allow him easier pathing for the number of models he was going to have to deploy.
I changed up my deployment slightly for this deploying the valkyries in the front with the hope that they would be able to get a bit more involved, Everything else was evenly split across the sides with my squids holding the center.
Andy deployed his infantry across one flank and his cavalry across the other with his warjacks suport and caster in the centre. The Shrine was front and centre threatening anything that moved significantly up the board.
On my first turn I ran everything up carefully keeping the valks and the voids out of the 14 inch threat from the shrine as the idea of allowing Andy to trigger crevasse was not something I wanted to give him trivially. I left a couple of the squids in range of the shrine so they could charge it next turn if I wanted but kept them withing shield guard range of the valks (as the Dhunian would mitigate at least one of those hits.) I also wanted to make sure that Lanyssa was in range of the shrine for next turn as that gives me a nice anchor to extend my threat range.
Andy formed up one unit of temple flameguard in front of the shrine and generally moved models up. Crucially he put up Enliven on both his heavies. (second photo)
On my second turn I saw that I could potentially kill off quite a chunk of the front line of TFG with a void and then leave him and his entropic aura enabling my squids to manuevre forward. Jaga cast S+P and then the void killed off a fair amount with the spray before teleporting forward to kill off another model and leave the entropic force up. Lanyssa applied hunters mark and two raged squids charged forward, the first one chunked the shrine and removed a bunch of flameguard and the second one tried to kill off the heavies but I underestimated how much Enliven would ruin my plan here and Andy managed to tuck both of his heavies just behind other models so I was reduced to tentacles which even under S+P just don't do the damage
I foolishly engaged hard on the flank as well and rather than teleporting my void back I sent it forward to get some more kills.
Andy's response was pretty brutal, putting up Positive charge on his crippled jack he took apart my squids (I had a brief moment of hope when the Death Rage attack looked like ti might end the jack but alas I would have needed a huge spike for that. He also killed both voids and a few valks although it turns out that they are very resilient under even just a single Dhunian Archon;s aura. (he also feated)
My third turn I tried to use my feat to remove the TFG that were blocking my path only to realise that my feat did not get around tough (sad times) and so tough no knockdown happened a few times. My remaining squid and wrastler were able to remove some more warjacks but at that point I just didn't have enough models to contest so we called it there.
A good game and one that reminded me that I really need to watch out my stuff like enliven when I'm sending in my squids (I could probably have moved the squid further out and denied him the tuck spot). Also how much I should hold onto the Voids as late game pieces rather than throwing them away cavalierly. In retrospect I could possibly have played this with more of an eye on attrition by killing off the frontline with squids quite possibly without exposing too much to his jacks. I'm definitely keen to investigate more Valkyrie and Dhunian interaction as that does feel very strong .
