So I see Tim Banky in his Arcane Assist saying he really likes LoD on the back of Sentinels and 4Shade. But I see a whole lot of community opinion that it is the marginal theme at best. I personally have liked a couple lists I still need to test with Elara2 as I feel like she really amps it up and shores up some weaknesses as well. What's the feel on it in relation to what we have since I don't see Ret getting any new themes anytime soon.
Especially without the Trident, is it just not there? (I don't own one and have no plans to buy one in the foreseeable future)

I only know Retribution through fighting against them, but Legions of Dawn always struck me as a bit similar to Legion of Steel in Khador: It almost doesn't matter how hard you hit or how high you can get your ARM when you are single wound melee infantry.
You can get to ARM 21+ in both themes easily, but that's not enough to protect you from a charge, or a weaponmaster, or anything like that. And that's without taking into account the million-and-one ways to do one automatic damage these days.
But perhaps such lists will make a bit of a comeback, as the shift to medium infantry might phase a lot of the single-wound hate out of the meta.

it's probably ret's best or 2nd best theme, fighting over it with shadows depending on the matchup, because of the units within. even without a trident. having imperatus with tactician from the theme available to everyone is a big deal, and sentinels and now destors do provide pretty strong armor cracking.
it's still single wound, non-tough (except for 1 unit under dauntless resolve from 4shade), expensive, FA2 infantry. without caster armor support, which ret doesn't have a ton of as a faction, beyond their minifeat sentinels are fodder for things like tharn or PT or exemplars, you either get the alpha with them and get 1 turn of glass cannon or they will probably get shredded. invictors are middling at the best of times and usually not worth the investment. destors are nasty now, but that's still 40 points, FA2, cost more than a battle engine to get a single unit in real life money, and you can't take thanes for free in theme because the base size. tridents are good but I struggle to see any reason to have more than 1 on the table due to them being clock hogs and their equivalent of pseudo-slipstream (I call it tankstream) being a nerfed version of the spell.
I prefer it to AFG: the theme (aka defenders of ios) and meme lists: the theme (aka forges of war, rahn mittens spam or vyros2 griffon spam or pacific rim), but the way the game's been moving it's just caught in the same thing the rest of the faction is caught in. which is the rest of the meta blows ret stuff up incredibly easily because ret has very limited armor and armor support and defense isn't a meaningful stat when things can boost attack rolls or get ridiculous MAT scores.

Okay, so for the sake of argument, lets say someone (NOT ME!) was looking at Elara2 in Legions but didn't own any of those (god awful looking) Tridents, and probably is not (ever) going to get one soon. How would that build start?
That's probably somewhat unfair, I probably will get one when I have two of everything else in the faction, but its a long way off.

Elara 2 -Imperatus -Chimera -Harpy Arcanist x3 Artificer x2 (1 free) Eiryss1 (free) Ghost Sniper x2 Sentinel + officer + soulless x2
that leaves you 3 points to spare. play around with the battlegroup to taste, drop an arcanist maybe, maybe change 1 of the sentinels to destors, so on and so forth.

In a meta full of high armor and/or high wound models, it's probably our best theme right now.

It seems to have been the best performer at ATC. Although I don't see where the Elara version was even dropped one time. Overall 50/50 win rate for Ret is certainly not terrible given past years. And 63% for LoD in general is pretty darned respectable.
