Greetings! Just got ret in a mystery box and am looking for tips on how the faction plays. I plan on running in forges of war, since i have mostly jacks. I received a battlebox, extra chimera, a gorgon, and a colossal which will probably be a hyperion. Any advice on rets playstyle is much appreciated! I have experience with trolls mostly but the elves are new to me.

You're Hylenna to start? or Someone else?
edit: What infantry package did you get?

First things first, get yourself 3 arcanists.

Not played vs Ret before? Also, no FLGS you can order from (for the 3 x Arcanist Mechaniks)?
See if you can get bits for a Griffon (Halberd hand, Shield and head) to replace the Gorgon. Should you wish to have a limited investment in Ret, even with the extra cost of the bits over the cheap Gorgon, you'll save yourself the bother of buying an extra Griffon later anyway (even post CID, I don't believe the Gorgon has enough to be taken ahead of any of our other Shyeel lights).
Two further (magnetised) Shyeel heavy kits (Manticores for Helynna, Phoenix and Hydra can be solid for her, too, but other casters have different preferences). Infantry wise for Forges, there're only two (three, if you include the Nyss Hunters, but we don't!): House Shyeel Arcanists; and Battle Mages. One of each is a solid start (irrespective of what happens with the CID changes, IMO), but a second one would depend on how said CID changes eventually come out.
Thing is, Helynna plays in a surprisingly Troll-like manner (walk up, take opportunistic shots with battlegroup, usually Manticores, or Hyperion as you have, preferably against a Hand of Destruction'd target, tank a hit with feat, cycle HoD, destroy, rinse and repeat until there's nothing left), and is quite different from Ret's usual archetype (high speed alpha and/or unexpected assassination). She and Vyros2 are the closest Ret get to attrition casters in the traditional sense.

If you plan on Forges, I would recommend a Phoenix. Especially since she was improved on during the CID. And if you can bank it, a Discordia upgrade for a Manticore.

(three, if you include the Nyss Hunters, but we don't!) Oh I don't know. My post-CID Forges list is going to be a Kaelyssa mkii ForceWall list with Nyss. And if you already have therm for your Trolls, they can be a decent enough filler until you get the faction fleshed out some.

Oh I don't know. My post-CID Forges list is going to be a Kaelyssa mkii ForceWall list with Nyss. In fairness, I playtested Kae with Nyss in Forges for CID (didn't post the report as it closed before I could do so) and it was... strange...! Janky as all hell and it can work, just... strange... I play Trolls?! o.O Just to confirm, you may have seen me post on an advice thread, I don't play Trolls, but am surrounded by Troll players (both where I am and back home).

Ok so i plan to start small at first and play the BB a bit then move on to 25pts. I'm thinking of running this: conflictchamber.com/#c5200p_-0hg01g2w2w0w0v3y3y3yRetribution Army - 25 / 25 points [Theme] Forges of War [Helynna 1] Magister Helynna [+30] - Chimera [8] - Griffon [8] - Griffon [8] - Hydra [15] - Manticore [14] Arcanist Mechanik [0(2)] Arcanist Mechanik [0(2)] Arcanist Mechanik [2] I like a solid combined arms list, and need it to be geared toward fighting skorne. More specifically against Imperial Warhost with Xekaar.

Hopefully the CID will drop after a short while (like, a couple of weeks) of you playing BB, so I'd hold off confirming that list, 'cos you may be able to get the House Shyeel Arcanists for free and Discordia (with that imprint) in-theme.
For 25pts
Magister Helynna (+30) - Sylys (4) - Discordia (18) - Manticore (14) - Chimera (8) - Griffon (8) Arcanist Mechanik (2) House Shyeel Arcanists (0) - Soulless Escort (1)
Of course, there's that 5pt leeway as Sylys isn't so vital at this level with the HSA and Arc solo providing focus and the overall force being small enough for Helynna to manage quite handily. So, an Artificer or Manticore (in place of the Griffon and Arcanist solo) is a possibility.
