Came up last week. Didn't "matter" cause I had a focus to spend (and then the damm thing STILL totally failed to roll the 6 it needed)
If a Devestator successfully Charges and then uses its "Star" attack "Rain of Death" and the attack hits is the attack autoboosted? Or is it 2d6 Pow 18/9 depending on whether one is/isn't B2B?
You would think I would know this. Most of the time I am head butting/slaming or not otherwise trying to get RoD in on the charge.

Only melee attacks are autoboosted during a charge.

It cannot use Rain of Death when it charges, as the Special Attack isn't listed under one if its weapons

But yeah it's not boosted, because it says 'instead of a charge attack'

Just to be clear Rain of Death auto-hits, right?

It does, the *Attack says "Models B2B suffer..." And "Models within 3" suffer...". No Attack Roll needed, it just happens.

so.....
Can make the attack as part of a charge (i.e. 3 inches and all the other stuff) because it says so but ISN"T boosted because it isn't a melee attack.

I would argue that it isn't boosted because it isn't a charge attack, but the end result is the same in all cases that I can think of.

It's not boosted as its not a melee attack.
But it auto hits.
It's funky if you can get base to base with 3 things.

The reason it isn't boosted by charging is because it's not on a weapon. If it was a special attack on the fists, then you would get the boost vs charge target.

Also if it is not a meele attck, enemies won't get unyielding against it.

The reason it isn't boosted by charging is because it's not on a weapon. If it was a special attack on the fists, then you would get the boost vs charge target. It also states outright it's not a charge attack. Again, it's a meaningless distinction, but if you had a similar ability that needed to roll to hit it would be relevant

My point is more that the requirement to be able to make a special attack as part of a charge is for that special attack to be the property of a weapon. If it is on a weapon that can make melee attacks then you would also get the boosted damage roll (because the first melee attack after completing a charge move is a charge attack).
Any prohibitions or allowances written in the special attack itself could modify the base case.
For Rain of Death it specifically allows you to use the attack when you charge, since normally that wouldn't be the case. It replaces your charge attack and since it is not a melee typed attack you don't get the boost.
If it said that it caused a POW 18 melee damage roll, then you WOULD get the boost as it would still the first melee attack after completing a charge move.
