So I am REALLY trying to be good on my warmachine purchases right now. With just a few things left to go for completionist (Victor & Chariots) I figured that far better on my wallet would be to get stuff onto the table that I own but haven't built/painted. One of those things is my third unit of winterguard.
Now strictly speaking I THINK that for most matchups Chickenslayers Stalingrad (basically put every winterguard you can into the list) w/Irusk2 is better but I wondered.....maybe S3 could run this as well ;-)
A) Iron Flesh. Always good and being able to deny blast damage to a 13 man unit is pretty irritating to a lot of factions (think us) that often rely upon blast to get the job done against dude spam. Sadly note that we have a Stoke the fires challenge if we both Windrush (yes) and IF (yes) on Turn 1 with only 2 to hand out.
B) Stoke the Fires + AM + Kodiaks can be 18 inches off your deployment line with a SF and run. They also nicely synergize with her feat
C) Storms Embrace. Poor mans bob and weave. Not an order so 9 inch bubble off her base. Not bad coverage so now def 14 WG and some of them are tough (Joe) and Immune to blast (Iron Flesh).
D) Artillerist is a nice to have with her gun, allowing greater opportunities to snipe out solos.
E) Cloud wall helps us even more get all the rockets (and many of the dudes) to where they need to go. She LOVES going first but if not then set it up to 20 inches off the deployment line bottom of 1.
E) Finally and perhaps most importantly, we have a decent personal assassination threat with Winter's Wrath.
1) Windrush 4 inches up
2) Chart another 7 (4+7=11). Have 2 inch reach, stationary, _AND_ critical slam for any knock down fun.
3) Winter's Wrath is 8 so 19 inches. You can boost if you need to with this allocation but remember, just requires the caster to be caught in the blast to be frozen.
4) Apply rockets and mortars and CRAs as desired.
What you are giving up is the flank synergies (but not all - she is still on the table). But I find that many times, unless they really are JUST a beast/jack build they are LOATH to send their beasts into the Man of Wars. Even with StF people play around threat 10inch khador jacks so you can't get the alpha. Sometimes it happens - but usually against less experienced players.
