Hey guys,
First time posting here. I like the generally positive outlook of these boards and hope to get some nice feedback on my thoughts.
I've found that I want a solid gun from one of my jacks in a lot of lists but the issue I'm finding is that the Cryx jacks either are too focus hungry or cant stand up to the return fire. The Desecrator has been nice in a list with min Bane warriors for the Scather and 2 free focus, the Leviathan comes with the hated D3 shots, the Harrower is neat if you can get a thresher charge into something with souls. These option all feel "ok" to be but I continue to pass on them for a Kraken. While I love my Kraken, I don't necessarily want him in every list. So, long story short, I am wondering what people think about bringing Raluk Moorclaw in and giving him a Merc jack.
The jack marshall rules are much more interesting now. For those unfamiliar you can do one of 4 things each turn with your jack now.
-Additional melee attack and +2 melee dmg
-A +2 to hit rolls
-When the jack aims he also get +2 ranged damage
-Free charge and +2 to hit on the charge (or slam)
On top of all this Raluk brings a few extras to the table. He gives his marshalled jack the Assault ability, he is 15/17 immune to knockdown when b2b with his jack, and he can repair out of faction models. This means he can repair Cryx jacks and a few of our casters(Denny3 and Morty2).
So what can we bring with him and is it worthwhile? (even though my first thoughts were to gain a solid gun, im going to add the jacks with only melee for conversation sake)
Buccaneer - low point cost, 17" knockdown shot at rat 7, set defense.
Freebooter - We have plenty of access to knockdown with the Denny casters which turns this guy into a weapon master. 11" threat for using jury-rigged and Raluk can repair it after. Hes cheap but pays for it with a terrible 12/17
Gallant - Expensive, but durable. Tough to add into our army since he doesnt like undead
Mangler - Free charges let Raluk give him +2 damage all day. A pow 20 thresher and follow up is nice. Add in the standard 4 armor Cryx swing and he does some work. Worth 15 points (19 with Raluk) I dunno.
Mariner - I have no idea how to make his gun work with assault. Maybe run Raluk up in front of him so he stops his charge when touching Raluk and is B2B with him? Even without the assault though, this guys gun is beefy. Range 15 makes up for the arm 17. Aims to pow 16 (pow 9 blast) with jack marshall.
Mule - This guy is interesting. He has options with aiming up to an (arcing fire) range 12 pow 17 rat 7. Sadly no boosting for crit fishing though. Assault is a 16" range.
Nomad - Cheap but not really better than our current jacks. A bit beefier.
Rocinante - Expensive but has a great gun and a powerful melee. He can sit back and lob rat 8 pow 16s into the fray and then mix it up as a late game piece. Defensive strike is nice. I dont know if guard dog would work on Raluk, maybe someone more rules conscious could let us know.
Rover - Shield guard option for us at arm 20. With Raluk hes 6 points more expensive than an Inflictor though. Aims to rat 7 pow 16 but short range. This one may be better in play than on paper.
Talon - Another inexpensive jack. Stationary on his stick is neat.
Vanguard - The package ends up being 2 more points than an infictor. His melee is weaker unless buffed with the jack marshal abilities but his has set defense and would gain that assault shot.
Im not sure any of these are great options that solve any of our current issues. Having the knockdown shot on the buccaneer might be nice for non scourge lists. Other than that I think ill try the Mule and Mariner just to see how it feels. I only get 1 game in a week though so it may be a while until I get some decent info.
