So slow day yesterday PM while waiting for a meeting to start so I decided to watch the IG final from L&L. It was a really interesting insight into the whole "How do I beat Slayer spam" which has SOME insight for Khador (just some cause we don't have incorp crap likie the gremlin swarm ;-)
Patrick (the winner) is playing Grymkin and has 5 heavies. Dreamer has a key spell for this match up - Manifest Destiny (drop lowest dice for battlegroup) that tunes her beasts up so that unyielding slayers are NOT that horrific.
TUrn 2 and 3 I think are the important one. From the video what seems to be going on is a positioning of tight layers of things. Leveraging Choke points, He leads with crabbits and swarms and DENIES good landing spots. So within 12 inches but the charges would not get to the Cage Ragers. Patrick, on the next turn, WOULD threaten things. And while a slayer COULD go in and squish the crabbit it would deny lanes for the next slayer to get to the hard hitters in the list
At that point it is largely rolling dice. Both players make a couple of small errors but that key turn really sets the stage for how it plays out.
I think the lesson for Khador is that we CAN play the same game - with a number of generally decent buffing spells/feats that tune up battle groups. What we haven't focused on is the "screen". By tighting positioning Mechanics, Kayazy, Manhunters, possibly widowmakers there are plays.
Now NONe of those are Crabbits. 13 wounds versus 5 and thus Gaspy needing a 14 to kill off with Hex Blast versus a 6 to kill a manhunter. A HUGE difference. But if he has to cast BOTH a hex blast AND mobility that isn't much fuel left for a slayer.....and you likely have an arc node at least SOMEWHAT in the way.
I don't have a lot of slayer spam in my meta. But it is a useful watch to see the play and to think about if this is a match up that has been giving you fits.
(and yes, Patrick also gets a huge advantage by going first so he doesn't lose a huge amount of board position to 16 inch runs from the slayers)
